Download or read book Late Colonial Sublime written by G. S. Sahota and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-15 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking cues from Walter Benjamin’s fragmentary writings on literary-historical method, Late Colonial Sublime reconstellates the dialectic of Enlightenment across a wide imperial geography, with special focus on the fashioning of neo-epics in Hindi and Urdu literary cultures in British India. Working through the limits of both Marxism and postcolonial critique, this book forges an innovative approach to the question of late romanticism and grounds categories such as the sublime within the dynamic of commodification. While G. S. Sahota takes canonical European critics such as Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer to the outskirts of empire, he reads Indian writers such as Muhammad Iqbal and Jayashankar Prasad in light of the expansion of instrumental rationality and the neotraditional critiques of the West it spurred at the onset of decolonization. By bringing together distinct literary canons—both metropolitan and colonial, hegemonic and subaltern, Western and Eastern, all of which took shape upon the common realities of imperial capitalism—Late Colonial Sublime takes an original dialectical approach. It experiments with fragments, parallaxes, and constellational form to explore the aporias of modernity as well as the possible futures they may signal in our midst. A bold intervention into contemporary debates that synthesizes a wealth of sources, this book will interest readers and scholars in world literature, critical theory, postcolonial criticism, and South Asian studies.

This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Quran, a book which brings glad tidings to mankind along with divine admonition, stresses the importance of man’s discovery of truth on both spiritual and intellectual planes. Every book has its objective and the objective of the Quran is to make man aware of the Creation plan of God. That is, to tell man why God created this world; what the purpose is of settling man on earth; what is required from man in his pre-death life span, and what he is going to confront after death. The purpose of the Quran is to make man aware of this reality, thus serving to guide man on his entire journey through life into the after-life. The main themes of the Quran are enlightenment, closeness to God, peace and spirituality. The Quran uses several terms, tawassum, tadabbur, and tafakkur, which indicate the learning of lessons through reflection, thinking and contemplation on the signs of God scattered across the world. The present translation of the Quran and its explanatory notes are written keeping in mind these very themes. Koran, Qur'an, Coran, Kuran, Islam, Prophet Muhmmad

Download or read book A Shrine to Moses written by Davide Bianchi and published by . This book was released on 2021-04-27 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers new insights into the Memorial of Moses on Mount Nebo, one of the most renowned coenobitic monasteries in the Byzantine period in Arabia. Between 2012 and 2014, the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum carried out new archaeological investigations in the southern wing of the monastery and in the church. The excavation in the central nave unearthed an empty tomb adorned with alabaster marble, placed on the highest point of the mountain. Starting from the archaeological data, the author critically reflects on the architectural phases of the basilica, how the monastery was run and its daily life. Special attention is also given to pilgrimages to the monastic shrines beyond the River Jordan and their progressive abandonment.
Download or read book The Meaning of Surah 71 Nuh Prophet Noah As from Holy Quran El Sagrado Cor n Bilingual Edition English Spanish written by Jannah Firdaus Mediapro and published by . This book was released on 2019-04-05 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Meaning of Surah 71 Nuh (Prophet Noah AS) From Holy Quran (El Sagrado Corán) Bilingual Edition In English & Spanish Languange. Surah 71 Nuḥ (Prophet Noah AS) is the seventy-first surah (chapter) of The Holy Quran with 28 ayat. It is about the Islamic prophet Noah (Nuḥ) and his complaint about his people rejecting all warning God gave them through Prophet Noah AS (Nuh). In Nuh, the seventy-first surah, the Quran refers to Nuh's prophethood in snippets. Nuh is a messenger of God. When Nuh realizes the messages are not accepted by the community, he supplicated to God. God planned to flood the community of Nuh at a specified time. God commanded Nuh to warn the people of the flood. God brings forth the water from the skies to prove Nuh's message to be accurate. In the Quran, the flood is a symbolization of the mercy of God to the believers. Allah SWT (God) gives the world a new beginning. The disbelievers disbelieved God's message and messenger Nuh so they were drowned. Because his people are unable to grasp the idea of the existence of one God, the lives of Prophet Muhammad SAW and Prophet Nuh AS (Noah) are parallel to each other for the time of the revelation of this surah. The surah was used to increase the faith of the believers; it shows that Prophet Nuh AS (Noah) before Prophet Muhammad SAW had difficulties in dealing with the disbelievers of his time.

Download or read book The Qur n in Context written by Angelika Neuwirth and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-10-26 with total page 872 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although recent scholarship has increasingly situated the Qur'ān in the historical context of Late Antiquity, such a perspective is only rarely accompanied by the kind of microstructural literary analysis routinely applied to the Bible. The present volume seeks to redress this lack of contact between literary and historical studies. Contributions to the first part of the volume address various general aspects of the Qur’an’s political, economic, linguistic, and cultural context, while the second part contains a number of close readings of specific Qur’ānic passages in the light of Judeo-Christian tradition and ancient Arabic poetry, as well as discussions of the Qur’ān’s internal chronology and transmission history. Throughout, special emphasis is given to methodological questions.
Download or read book Desiring Arabs written by Joseph A. Massad and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexual desire has long played a key role in Western judgments about the value of Arab civilization. In the past, Westerners viewed the Arab world as licentious, and Western intolerance of sex led them to brand Arabs as decadent; but as Western society became more sexually open, the supposedly prudish Arabs soon became viewed as backward. Rather than focusing exclusively on how these views developed in the West, in Desiring Arabs Joseph A. Massad reveals the history of how Arabs represented their own sexual desires. To this aim, he assembles a massive and diverse compendium of Arabic writing from the nineteenth century to the present in order to chart the changes in Arab sexual attitudes and their links to Arab notions of cultural heritage and civilization. A work of impressive scope and erudition, Massad’s chronicle of both the history and modern permutations of the debate over representations of sexual desires and practices in the Arab world is a crucial addition to our understanding of a frequently oversimplified and vilified culture. “A pioneering work on a very timely yet frustratingly neglected topic. . . . I know of no other study that can even begin to compare with the detail and scope of [this] work.”—Khaled El-Rouayheb, Middle East Report “In Desiring Arabs, [Edward] Said’s disciple Joseph A. Massad corroborates his mentor’s thesis that orientalist writing was racist and dehumanizing. . . . [Massad] brilliantly goes on to trace the legacy of this racist, internalized, orientalist discourse up to the present.”—Financial Times
