Book The Meaning of Dreams Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Meaning of Dreams Classic Reprint written by Isador H. Coriat and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Meaning of Dreams To be sure, it must also be said that most medical psychologists at present believe Freud has erred in attempting to reduce all dreams to a single formula. Certainly, however, his formula holds good in a sur prisingly large number of instances, as the reader will discover. And, apart from the question of its invariability, there can be no denying the soundness of the funda mental principle oh which all Freudian dream-analysis rests the principle, namely, that every dream, no matter how trivial, fantastic, or meaningless it may seem, has a definite meaning, and a meaning that sometimes is of great significance to the dreamer. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Children's Dreams From the very dawn of history the world of dreams has occupied a position of unique interest. In the biblical record the interpreter of dreams was regarded as a man of exceptional power and ability who could penetrate the mystery of the occult and give to the world the meaning of the night-vision. Among primitive races the dream is regarded with reverence and anxiety as the message from the back of beyond of something of immense importance to the welfare of the dreamer. Hence, the extraordinary influence of those who profess to be able to unravel the symbolism of the mysterious visitation and translate it into the language of everyday life. The universality of the dream is in itself evidence of its biological significance, but in the past the scientific study of the dream has received insufficient attention. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dreams and Their Meanings I ought to explain why I, being a person without any of the scientific attainments that would fit one for the task, take it on me to write of dreams. It occurred to me that there were certain kinds of dreams common to nearly every one. Every one (using the word in a liberal sense, and not in the grudging spirit of the man who objected to ninety-nine ducks being spoken of as a round hundred) is familiar with the dream of falling over a precipice. A great many people know the dream that they are flying. Few have not dreamed that they have entered a polite assembly in a costume very much more appropriate to a Turkish bath than to their visionary surroundings, and there are many other common, generally familiar, dreams. And this being so, I was struck by the fact that no one seemed to have tried to find the common cause of each kind respectively of familiar dreams. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dreams of Orlow Dreaming True being in her case more or less under control. Dr. Van Eeden, the celebrated Dutch writer, describes his own clear dreams, which seem similar, in an interesting Part of the Proceedings of the Society for Psychical Research, vol. 26, pp. 431-61. As to how far Miss Irvine has edited the dream experiences, she will, no doubt, make clear herself. In any case this book may well rank with' that other fascinating dream story, Du Maurier's Peter Ibbetsom; but if a clear statement is made as to the amount of editing - if any - it may. Be more scientifically, valuable than its precursor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Studies in Dreams Classic Reprint

Download or read book Studies in Dreams Classic Reprint written by Mary Arnold-Forster and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Dreams I have been asked by the dreamer of these dreams to add a foreword of my own. I do not know that I can add anything that will contribute to their interest, whether in the way of discussion, criticism or interpretation. The author of the book modestly makes no claim to be a scientific explorer but only to be a recorder of her own dream experiences, who has been impelled "to stray a little beyond the province" assigned and "to attempt some partial explanation of the riddles that are met with." But the reader, I am sure, will find that she has scarcely done herself justice in this diffident attitude, for the accurate recording of observations accurately made is the basis of science and requires the development and possession of no common talent. Such observations are of much more scientific value than a number of inadequate theories - inadequate because based upon only a selected or limited group of facts. Moreover, these pages are rich in sound comments and discussions of the recorded phenomena, which are suggestive of new problems and points of view, and the author offers us particularly a well-considered new theory of the mechanism of dreams. A considerable number of the observations recorded must be regarded as additions to our knowledge and as new data for an adequate interpretation of the mechanism of dreams. Book The Technique of Dream Interpretation Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Technique of Dream Interpretation Classic Reprint written by Wilhelm Stekel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-25 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Technique of Dream Interpretation We ask the dreamer, what occurs to him in connection with the dream. If he is a novice, he will invariably reply: Nothing at all. What should occur to me? We then insist that the dream must suggest occurrences. If the resistance or the lack of understanding is considerable, the dreamer will still insist that nothing occurs to him. Now there are various aids, nevertheless, to get him to talk. We ask him of what actual experience the dream reminds him. About this most people have some idea. They regard the dream as the distorted reproduction of various experiences and are quite willing to offer these. Then one observes that the presentation of the dream has altered or falsified the experience, that strange elements have insinuated themselves - and thus come unawares into the anal ysis. Or one asks, what meaning for the life of the dreamer this or that person occurring in the dream has, and thus brings the dreamer to speech. As a rule he then speaks on and reveals his suppressed material. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • Author : Sigmund Freud

Download or read book Dream Psychology written by Sigmund Freud and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Dreams tell us many an unpleasant biological truth about ourselves and only very free minds can thrive on such a diet." - Andre Tridon, author, "Psychoanalysis, Sleep and Dreams" Published in 1921, this book comes years after the publication of the controversial and ground-breaking The Interpretation of Dreams by the same author. In the first chapter, Dr. Freud first talks about dreams, their significance and meaning. He also explains how he interprets dreams using his technique, psychotherapy. In the next chapter, he explains the dream mechanism or how elements from real events gets included in or formed into dreams, how dreams are formed, and other related aspects. He then discusses why dreams disguise desires, dream analysis, and other related, and very interesting, topics. Throughout the book, Dr. Freud cites some of his own experiences in dreaming, as well as those of his patients, as examples. This proves to be helpful in illustrating certain points in the author's arguments or points of discussion and guides the ordinary reader to a better understanding of them. The author's writing style, which included technical terms that were fleshed out using a conversational tone and choice of words, make this book easy to digest. After all, it has been designed for beginners in the study of psychoanalysis. In addition, the major points he put forward in The Interpretation of Dreams were also included here, albeit in a more "beginner-friendly" fashion. He still maintains that there is a definite connection between events in one's life and those featured in dreams. He also discusses the concept of "wish fulfillment" in dreams and that many dream visions are symbolic, hence the unusual nature of events and things seen in dreams. He also did not fail to include the sexual aspect in dreaming, where sexual desires play a significant role in the unconscious. Over all, this edition is highly suitable for those wanting to learn or review the rudiments of dream analysis and psychoanalysis. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dreams and Premonitions The truth of these astounding facts is beyond all question. The problem IS to explain the facts. Mod cm psychology talks rather vaguely of the subcon scious mind and of the subliminal self, but this really explains nothing. We do not advance toward the understanding of a mystery simply by applying to it a new name. What is that thing called the subcon scious, or the subliminal, and what are its powers and its limitations? Unless science can satisfactorily answer such questions it has done little indeed toward solving these psychological puzzles. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Borderland of Psychical Research The reason for this is very simple. The views which had separated them from ordinary interest were due to a reaction against the more ancient con ception of dreams. We are wont to suppose that men naturally distinguish between their dreams and normal experiences. This, however, is not altogether true. The ancients gave an external or objective meaning to dreams, and savages still do so, -a meaning that associates them very closely with normal experience. The causes of this may be the untu tored neglect of ordinary for supposedly significant dreams, and then the consideration of only the latter, as there is some evidence that this was the case. It matters not what the reason for it was. The fact is indisputable that to many ancient people dreams were as much testimony to external influences or meaning as were normal sensory experiences. Illu sions and hallucinations did not altogether escape the same interpretation. It is possible that the more intelligent views of these phenomena among the an cients were not recorded as were those of the igno rant and superstitious. But this does not alter the impression that we get of the natural man's ideas. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
