Book The Matthew Journey A Discipleship Manual Through the Gospel of Matthew

Download or read book The Matthew Journey A Discipleship Manual Through the Gospel of Matthew written by Jeff S. Kennedy and published by Essentialife Resources. This book was released on 2011-12 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before Jesus left his disciples he gave them the famous commission to "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I've commanded you..." (Mt 28:19-20). The commission actually reveals a unique characteristic of Matthew's Gospel - it was designed to be a training manual for the Matthean community of disciples. Matthew's Gospel was structured along five major discourses on discipleship (Ch's 5-7; 10; 13; 18; 24-25). In addition to these formalized sermons, the gospel contains numerous situational teaching moments. Thus, future disciples are expected to assimilate the entire spectrum of Jesus' teaching content found in both His preaching and practice. The disciple of Jesus should know: - who Jesus is - what Jesus has to say, and - what Jesus did. Knowing who he is will inspire faith in him. Knowing what he commands will guide the disciple in obedience, and knowing what the Master does will provide a pattern to follow. These three lines of inquiry will guide the disciple's development into the image of Jesus. The end-game in following such a manual is that the believer will be prepared to make disciples of others. If this all sounds to you like a pretty tall order, well then you're right. It is a demanding journey! Welcome to The Matthew Journey. This study guide follow's the course taught at Eastpoint Church in Spokane Valley, WA. It is designed to be a thirteen week discipleship/mentoring curriculum for committed disciples.

Book A Commentary on the Gospel of Matthew

Download or read book A Commentary on the Gospel of Matthew written by Craig S. Keener and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 1070 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This excellent commentary on Matthew offers a unique interpretive approach that focuses on the socio-historical context of the Gospel and the nature of Matthew's exhortation to his first-century Christian audience. By merging a careful study of Matthew's Gospel in relation to the social context of the ancient Mediterranean world with a detailed look at what we know of first-century Jewish-Christian relations, Craig Keener uncovers significant insights into the Gospel not found in any other Matthew commentary. In addition, Keener's commentary is a useful discipleship manual for the church. His unique approach recaptures the full "shock effect" of Jesus' teachings in their original context and allows Matthew to make his point with greater narrative artistry. Keener also brings home the total impact of Matthew's message, including its clear portrait of Jesus and its call for discipleship, both to the Gospel's ancient readers and to believers today.

Download or read book Jesus and the Nations written by Cedric E. W. Vine and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-08-11 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus's command to disciple all the nations in Matt 28:19 has provided a powerful catalyst for cross-cultural mission for the past two thousand years. But what does this command mean in the context of Matthew's narrative? Cedric E. W. Vine proposes an understanding of Matthean discipleship and mission that builds on Richard Bauckham's open-audience thesis in The Gospels for All Christians (1998) and his own The Audience of Matthew (2014). Vine argues from a biblical theology perspective that Matthew's pervasive and consistent application of the nation-directed identities of prophet, righteous person, student-teacher, wise man, and scribe to the followers of Jesus reveals a concern less with defining community boundaries or promoting "church growth" and more with casting a powerful vision of nations transformed through the acceptance of the sovereignty of the risen king. Matthew's missiological horizon stretches well beyond defending, as suggested by some commentators, an inferred first-century Matthean community in an acrimonious intramural dispute with other Jewish groups. Rather, Matthew prepares his readers, first century and later, through a multifaceted and nuanced theology of discipleship, for participation in a missiological movement that is national in its focus, breathtaking in its scope, eschatological in its significance, and open in its appeal.

Book Your Discipleship Journey Workbook

Download or read book Your Discipleship Journey Workbook written by John Harris and published by . This book was released on 2017-02-20 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happened to Jesus' first disciples between Matthew 4 and Matthew 28?The answer lies in the words of Jesus when he said he would "make" the first followers into fishers of men (Mt 4:19); and then he told them to go and "make" disciples of others (Mt 28:19). There was an intentional making or a building process involved. Becoming a mature disciple of Jesus doesn't just happen by osmosis. We need to learn how to be made into a disciple of Jesus. We can follow the process Jesus used with his first disciples.Your Discipleship Journey follows Jesus and his first disciples on their journey through the Gospel of Matthew. It shows how some very ordinary men in Matthew 4:19 not only became fishers of men and disciples of Jesus, but also became disciple-makers in Matthew 28:19. And it proposes that by going on the journey with the first disciples, the modern disciple of Jesus can learn how to be made into a disciple-making disciple too.
