Book excerpt: The Masses Are Revolting makes two overarching claims about the interrelation of disgust and aesthetics in Victorian culture and literature. First, I place the Victorian novel's focus on the newly repulsive conditions of British society in dialogue with the privileged position Enlightenment aesthetics afforded to the disgusting as the antithesis of the beautiful. An object which disgusts cannot be aesthetically pleasing, the story goes, since it is felt to be as repulsive in art as in nature. Traditional aesthetics thus prohibited the disgusting from artistic and literary composition, because it was thought to overflow the representational frame and preclude disinterested judgment. Through close readings of works by Charlotte Bronte, John Ruskin, Thomas Hardy, and George Gissing, I argue that Victorian literary texts, to the contrary, took this boundary confusion between disgusting representations and disgusting realities as a point of departure, and so broke much more sharply with the 18th and early 19th century discourse of taste and beauty than has conventionally been acknowledged. Second, while emphasizing this disconnect between Victorian literary practice and aesthetic theory, I also examine the unprecedented importance that Victorians afforded to disgust as a public and political passion, focusing in individual chapters on the complex roles that disgust played in Victorian medicine, physiology, obscenity law, and sanitation. In a chapter surveying the documentation of the 1858 Great Stink of London, for example, I argue that the Victorian rhetoric of social revulsion produced in the wake of the sewage crisis derived from the Enlightenment discourse of aesthetic judgment. Thus, while Victorian literature industriously flouted the aesthetic prohibition of the disgusting, industrial society absorbed it.

Are we truly living in the last days of America, as a Super Power? All States without exception, have come to an end, as a historical norm. America is not mentioned in any Jewish, Christian, or Islamic, scriptures. Thus, it will not be here as we know it, in the end. But this is not a religious writing. Oil is only the first commodity to be affected with housing, money, food, loans and soon jobs following. Like China, and the EU, we need to stop the hording of so much money in the hands of so few. The gold standard is not the bases for our money since 1975. Meaning that paper and plastic have no intrinsic worth. If history repeats itself, and it does, we may have multiple civil wars, with Hawaii declaring independence in April as a protest over how the economy has been managed. With each State having its own National guard, and gangs and militia's, and KKK, armed to the teeth, we will start to hear phrases like who will pay for this and that debt. With maybe as many as ten different presidents, as the U.S. brakes up. Rumors of war. We, the people, must demand a marshal plan for America, and not Europe, Japan, S. Korea, etc., and now maybe Iraq. All of us in America need to have access to the money we need, at low or no cost to save America, and optimize the multiplier effect: but it has to be spent in the U.S., to make America strong. Thus, we need to stop the banks and utility companies, etc. from hording. It is insanity to have multibillionaires, as they cannot spend these sums. We can re-order the economy or others will do it for us. This book will attempt to answer the question on how to stop such a fall, into a dark age. And instead have cooperation, and justice between all men and countries; Stopping this horrible cycle of systematic retardation of Mankind. America is the last best hope for Mankind, as America has polluted and consumed too much of this planet's resources becoming the Super Power it is, to have a new emerging Super Power, doing the same.

The status of women and minorities is at the center of this. The West's long history of inequality is gradually changing. When women's equality is considered symbolically, it represents the feminine rising to parity with the masculine, a status it has not held since prehistory. Minority groups have carried the projected shadow of the White majority for centuries; that is gradually ending. Integration of the feminine and the shadow are core concepts of C.G. Jung's psychology of individuation. The emerging equality of women and minorities indicates that our group psychology is entering a period of individuation. This is a huge change, at least as profound as pagan Rome becoming Christian or medieval Europe transitioning into the modern West. The turmoil of our time is because of the great historical change as we leave what has been the modern West. The turmoil is the widespread appearance of the same conflicts that Jung saw in his patients a century ago. The same answer still applies, the path Jung realized at the time, individuation, and it is already beginning to shape our future. In this book author John Cahman traces the history of Western Civilization as a developmental process and shows how our time marks a great turning point in that story as we leave an age of sexism, racism, and hierarchy and enter one of individuation.
