Book Queen Victoria s Matchmaking

Download or read book Queen Victoria s Matchmaking written by Deborah Cadbury and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2017-11-14 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A captivating exploration of the role in which Queen Victoria exerted the most international power and influence: as a matchmaking grandmother. As her reign approached its sixth decade, Queen Victoria's grandchildren numbered over thirty, and to maintain and increase British royal power, she was determined to maneuver them into a series of dynastic marriages with the royal houses of Europe. Yet for all their apparent obedience, her grandchildren often had plans of their own, fueled by strong wills and romantic hearts. Victoria's matchmaking plans were further complicated by the tumultuous international upheavals of the time: revolution and war were in the air, and kings and queens, princes and princesses were vulnerable targets. Queen Victoria's Matchmaking travels through the glittering, decadent palaces of Europe from London to Saint Petersburg, weaving in scandals, political machinations and family tensions to enthralling effect. It is at once an intimate portrait of a royal family and an examination of the conflict caused by the marriages the Queen arranged. At the heart of it all is Victoria herself: doting grandmother one moment, determined Queen Empress the next.

Book My Husband and I

Download or read book My Husband and I written by Ingrid Seward and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-11-02 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than 70 years, the marriage of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip was at the centre of the nation's life. Now, in My Husband and I, Ingrid Seward reveals the real story of their loving and enduring relationship. When a young Princess Elizabeth met and fell in love with the dashing Naval Lieutenant Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, it wasn't without its problems. The romance between the sailor prince and the young princess brought a splash of colour to a nation still in the grip of post-war austerity. When they married in Westminster Abbey in November 1947, there were 3000 guests, including six kings and seven queens. Within five years, as Queen Elizabeth II, she would ascend to the throne and later be crowned in front of millions watching through the new medium of television. Throughout her record-breaking reign until Prince Philip's death on 9 April 2021, she relied on the formidable partnership she had made with her consort. Now, acclaimed royal biographer Ingrid Seward sheds new light on their relationship and its impact on their family and on the nation. In My Husband and I, we discover the challenges faced by Prince Philip as he had to learn to play second fiddle to the Queen in all their public engagements, but we also get a revealing insight into how their relationship operated behind closed doors. As the years went by, there were rumours of marital troubles, fierce debates over how to bring up their children, and they had to deal with family traumas - from scandalous divorces to shocking deaths - in the full glare of the public eye. But somehow, their relationship endured and provided a model of constancy to inspire all around them. This book is not only a vivid portrait of a hugely important marriage, it is a celebration of the power of love.

Download or read book Marriage With My Kingdom written by Alison Plowden and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2011-07-31 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in 1533, Elizabeth I was the product of the doomed marriage of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. In 1558, on her Catholic sister Mary's death, she ascended the throne and reigned for 45 years. Loved and respected by her subjects and idolised by future generations, Gloriana's fierce devotion to her country and its people made her England's fairest queen and icon. Royal marriage in the age of Elizabeth was a political business. Unions between great familes could be the key to security at home and to the making of great empires. No one represented a better prize than Elizabeth. She encouraged attention and spent her life surrounded by suitors, but she remained, until the end, married only to her kingdom. This, the third volume of Alison Plowden's Elizabethan quartet, plots the true story of the Virgin Queen's courtships and her career as "the greatest tease in history".

Book excerpt: In this compelling novel of Tudor drama and suspense, acclaimed biographer Alison Weir explores one of England’s most scandalous royal love affairs: the romance between the “Virgin Queen” Elizabeth I and her courtier Lord Robert Dudley. “Entrancing . . . Weir manages to weave actual history and the imagined kind together seamlessly.”—Huntington News Only twenty-five and newly crowned, Elizabeth vows to rule the country as both queen and king. But her counselors continually press her to form an advantageous marriage and produce an heir. Though none of the suitors have yet worked their way to her throne, the dashing—though married—Lord Robert lays claim to Elizabeth’s heart. Their flagrant flirting, their unescorted outings, and the appointment of Lord Robert to Master of Horse inspire whispers through the court, and even rumors that Elizabeth has secretly given birth to Lord Robert’s child. Then Robert’s wife is found dead, and universal shock soon gives way to accusations of murder. Despite the scandal, Elizabeth and Robert manage to navigate the choppy political, economic, and religious waters around them. But the greatest obstacle to marriage between the Queen and her true love may come not from outside forces, but from within. With intricate period detail and captivating prose, Alison Weir examines one of history’s most provocative “Did they or didn’t they?” debates. The Marriage Game maneuvers through the alliances, duplicities, intrigue, and emotions of a woman intent on sovereignty—over her country and herself.

Book The Marriage Manual

  • ISBN : 1499084323
  • Pages : 137 pages

Download or read book The Marriage Manual written by Ainsley H. Duff and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-11-22 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rationale for the book. Marriage is under serious attack from the forces of evil. There is much deception in the world and, sad to say, this deception is coming even from the pulpit. The idea that God does not want you to suffer and will understand your decision to divorce your spouse is not scriptural and can have eternal consequences for those who do this. If you do not forgive that spouse you are about to divorce, neither will your Heavenly Father forgive your decision to divorce. Even if you have already been divorced and remarried, forgiving those who hurt you is a prerequisite for receiving forgiveness from God, for your sins. God has given clear instructions, in His Word, about marriage and what he expects from such a union. But, what has happened is that we have taken Gods Grace and Mercy as excuses to create a God who sits in Heaven just handing out forgiveness and blessings to us as we continually live in disobedience to His word, while at the same time expecting Him to pour out financial and other rewards to us. God used the prophet, Hosea, to demonstrate to us that He hurts as we go a whoring from Him after our gods, whether in the form of wealth, sex or any of the many other gods we place before Him. Dont forget that another name for Jehovah is Jealous and He is a jealous God. This book seeks to look at marriage from the aspect of Gods directions to us as stated in the Bible. It also takes a look at some of the marriages of biblical figures such as Adam and Eve, Joseph and Mary, King David and his wives, King Ahab and Jezebel among others. Men and women are different in all their aspects and this must be taken into consideration as they make that decision to walk lifes path together as husband and wife, as God in His wisdom has laid out clear instructions to us with regards to our roles in this union. He is clear on children and how they should be brought up as well as how they should relate to their parents in the family. The roles of the father and of the mother are clearly outlined as well as when the dissolution of union through divorce is allowed by God. It is hoped that marriages will benefit as a result of the contents found between the covers of THE MARRIAGE MANUAL.

Download or read book Inside the Royal Wardrobe written by Kate Strasdin and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-10-05 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Queen Alexandra used clothes to fashion images of herself as a wife, a mother and a royal: a woman who both led Britain alongside her husband Edward VII and lived her life through fashion. Inside the Royal Wardrobe overturns the popular portrait of a vapid and neglected queen, examining the surviving garments of Alexandra, Princess of Wales – who later became Queen Consort – to unlock a rich tapestry of royal dress and society in the second half of the 19th century. More than 130 extraordinary garments from Alexandra's wardrobe survive, from sumptuous court dress and politicised fancy dress to mourning attire and elegant coronation gowns, and can be found in various collections around the world, from London, Oslo and Denmark to New York, Toronto and Tokyo. Curator and fashion scholar Kate Strasdin places these garments at the heart of this in-depth study, examining their relationships to issues such as body politics, power, celebrity, social identity and performance, and interpreting Alexandra's world from the objects out. Adopting an object-based methodology, the book features a range of original sources from letters, travel journals and newspaper editorials, to wardrobe accounts, memoirs, tailors' ledgers and business records. Revealing a shrewd and socially aware woman attuned to the popular power of royal dress, the work will appeal to students and scholars of costume, fashion and dress history, as well as of material culture and 19th century history.
