Book excerpt: A costume drama based on the adventures of Maritana, a Gypsy dancer, who is in love with Don César de Bazan, a penniless nobleman. Don César is arrested for dueling and sentenced to die when he intercedes on behalf of Lazarillo, a lad who was cruelly beaten by the captain of the guards. Maritana implores Queen Isabel to save her lover's life, and the queen induces the king to pardon him. Maritana and Don César are married. However, the king is attracted to Maritana and lures her to a hunting lodge, where Don César, who escapes jail, arrives in time to save her from his advances. The queen arrives, stirred by jealousy, just as the king and Don César engage in combat. Maritanaʹs quick wit saves the king from disgrace, and as a reward he restores Don César's estates to him.

Book excerpt: A long-time admirer of British M. P. Arthur Fallaray, Lola De Breze takes a position as maid to Arthur's wife, Lady Feo, who prefers a gay life with newspaper owner Paul Chalfon to the political ambitions of her husband. When word comes that Fallaray has been injured in a hunting accident, Lola goes to his side and Lady Feo discovers love letters written--but never mailed--by Lola to Fallaray. On the pretense of forcing Fallaray to allow Feo to divorce him, Chalfon obtains the letters from Lady Feo and publishes them. Feo burns the original letters in anger, while Lola confesses her love to Fallaray and persuades him to continue in politics rather than ruin his career by marrying her. Fallaray becomes prime minister; Lola returns to her father and trusts to the future for her happiness.

Book excerpt: To escape the edict of Egypt's Pharoah, Rameses I, condemning all first-born Hebrew males, the infant Moses is set adrift on the Nile in a reed basket. Saved by the pharaoh's daughter Bithiah, he is adopted by her and brought up in the court of her brother, Pharaoh Seti. Moses gains Seti's favor and the love of the throne princess Nefertiri, as well as the hatred of Seti's son, Rameses. When his Hebrew heritage is revealed, Moses is cast out of Egypt, and makes his way across the desert where he marries, has a son and is commanded by God to return to Egypt to free the Hebrews from slavery. In Egypt Moses's fiercest enemy proves to be not Rameses, but someone near to him who can 'harden his heart'.

Download or read book The Glimpses of the Moon written by Edith Wharton and published by G.J. McLeod. This book was released on 1922 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in the 1920s, The Glimpses of the Moon details the romantic misadventures of Nick Lansing and Susy Branch, a couple with the right connections but not much in the way of funds. They devise a shrewd bargain: they'll marry and spend a year or so sponging off their wealthy friends, honeymooning in their mansions and villas. As Susy explains, "We should really, in a way, help more than hamper each other. We both know the ropes so well; what one of us didn't see the other might -- in the way of opportunities, I mean." The other part of the plan states that if either one of them meets someone who can advance them socially, they're each free to dissolve the marriage. How their plan unfolds is a comedy of eros that will charm all fans of Wharton's work.
