Book The Market for Non traditional Agricultural Exports

Download or read book The Market for Non traditional Agricultural Exports written by David Hallam and published by FAO. This book was released on 2004 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last decade has witnessed a steady decline in the dollar values of many of the traditional agricultural export crops (TAEs) from developing countries, and this has highlighted the risks of depending upon a very narrow export base for foreign exchange earning. This report examines a range of issues related to the market for non-traditional agricultural exports (NTAEs), including data on trends during the years 1992 to 2001, both in volume and value terms; leading developing country exporters; the trade and import policies of the major destination buyers; the prospects for developing niche markets for organic and fair trade NTAEs.

Book The World Trade Organisation and India s Agricultural Exports

Download or read book The World Trade Organisation and India s Agricultural Exports written by Dastgir Alam and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2011-08-30 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Trade and Distribution, , language: English, abstract: When World Trade Organisation (WTO) brought agricultural trade in its domain there was great expectation that trade of agricultural items will improve and masses will gain from it through greater market access and better prices particularly to the developing nations. But at the same time there was fear among the developing nations that foul play of some developed nations may have negative impact on market access and better prices for their produce. The present paper analyses the Indian concerns in this respect. It is found that the negative impact of WTO on agricultural commodities exports as it was thought is not a valid case for India. India’s agricultural items have got a due respect in international market. Not only the quantity of export has increased but also there is improvement in the prices of agricultural items. Non traditional agricultural items have got greater market access and better prices followed by traditional items and items of future potential.

Book Non Traditional Crops Traditional Constraints the Adoption and Diffusion of Export Crops Among Guatemalan Smallholders

Download or read book Non Traditional Crops Traditional Constraints the Adoption and Diffusion of Export Crops Among Guatemalan Smallholders written by Calogero Carletto and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2007 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This paper uses a duration analysis based on adoption data spanning more than 25 years from six communities in the Central Highlands of Guatemala. The analysis explores how household characteristics and external trends play into both the adoption and diffusion processes of non-traditional exports among smallholders. Adoption was initially widespread and rapid, which led nontraditional exports to be hailed as a pro-poor success, reaching all but the smallest landholders. However, over time more than two-thirds of adopters eventually dropped out of production of nontraditional exports. Based on the analysis, production of nontraditional exports appears to have delivered less prosperity to adopters than initially promised. Although smallholders may be enticed into entering into nontraditional exports markets when conditions are favorable, they may lack the capacity to overcome the difficulties that inevitably arise in complex types of cultivations and in highly variable global agricultural markets. Governmental and non-governmental organizations can attempt to mitigate these difficulties, but market forces may overwhelm their efforts, with some adopters still unable to compete in global markets.

Book An Analysis of the Non traditional Agricultural Export Potential for Rwanda

Download or read book An Analysis of the Non traditional Agricultural Export Potential for Rwanda written by Jean Bosco Minega Rwigema and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rwanda is constrained by an export structure that is heavily dependent on one or a few agricultural export products such as coffee, tea, pyrethrum and cinchona. The country did not manage to industrialize or to diversify its export structure significantly during the post-independence period. The situation was worsened by the civil war of 1994, which almost destroyed all sectors of the economy. Traditional export crops, such as coffee, cotton, tea, cocoa, palm oil, and tobacco are all subject to large price fluctuations and declining world market prices. This paper considered the case for diversification into non-traditional agricultural exports as a strategy for improving a developing country's terms of trade. The study put forward a case of Higland Flowers Project; a flowers project located in rural Kigali about 5 kilometers to the Kigali International airport.

Book Alternative Policies to Agricultural Export Taxes That Are Less Market Distorting

Download or read book Alternative Policies to Agricultural Export Taxes That Are Less Market Distorting written by United States Department of Agriculture and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to the surges in world agricultural and food prices that have occurred since 2006, many countries imposed controls on their agricultural exports, using taxes, quotas, and complete export bans. Further, during the past few decades, many countries have maintained longstanding export taxes not only on agricultural goods, but also on forestry and fishery products, minerals, metals, and precious stones. This study examines the market effects of a conventional export tax, as well as three alternative policies that are less market distorting, and thereby less welfare diminishing: a subsidy to consumption, a tax on production, and a modification of a conventional export tax that allows additional exports after producers meet a sales requirement for their output. All three alternatives result in more exports of affected goods than the unmodified tax does. The increased exports will thereby benefit foreign consumers, and if the country is a large exporter of an affected good on the world market, the benefit is larger, because the additional exports will lower the good's world purchase price. Increased global sales and lower prices will improve world food security and benefit the consuming poor of the world, especially if the affected product is a staple food such as wheat or rice. Policies that pursue such goals are consistent with U.S. efforts to improve world food security. However, the alternative policies are "second best" options because they are less effective at increasing both domestic and world economic welfare than the first best policy of abolishing the export tax and allowing free export.
