  • Pages : 426 pages

Download or read book Leaving Mac Behind written by Geoffrey Roecker and published by Fonthill Media. This book was released on 2019-08-22 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "My first telegram came Sep. 3 1942 that my son was missing in action. And the next telegram came Aug. 18 1943 that he was Declared Dead. Till this day I do not know what happened to him." Mrs. Ann M. Lyons, August 7, 1957. Between 1942 and 1944, nearly four hundred Marines virtually vanished in the jungles, seas, and skies of Guadalcanal. They were the victims of enemy ambushes and friendly fire, hard fighting and poor planning, their deaths witnessed by dozens or not at all. They were buried in field graves, in cemeteries as unknowns, or left where they fell. They were classified as "missing," as "not recovered," as "presumed dead." And in the years that followed, their families wondered at their fates and how an administrative decision could close the book on sons, brothers, and husbands without healing the wounds left by their absence. 'Leaving Mac Behind' reconstructs the lives, last moments, and legacies of some of these men. Original records, eyewitness accounts, and recent discoveries shed new light on the lost graves of Guadalcanal's missing Marines--and the ongoing efforts to bring them home.

Book The Other Side of the Mountain

Download or read book The Other Side of the Mountain written by Salman Khurshid and published by Hay House, Inc. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An authoritative, forthright and thought-provoking narrative that attempts to analyse why the Congress lost the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and also focuses on the fluctuating fortunes of the Bharatiya Janata Party and other political parties, besides dealing with crucial issues having a bearing on the country’s future. As a former minister who has held important portfolios in the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government, Salman Khurshid has witnessed crucial behind-the-scenes developments that have had a profound impact on the destiny of the nation. Beginning with the reasons for the rout of the Congress in 2014, including the series of scams that sealed its fate, he goes on to point out that the party has the ability to bounce back, given the many setbacks that have affected the Narendra Modi Government at the Centre as well as some BJP-ruled states and the Aam Aadmi Party Government in Delhi. The author next highlights the role of the media, which, he feels, was largely instrumental in ensuring the Congress’s defeat. He, nevertheless, acknowledges that, of late, the fourth estate has not spared the governments in power at the Centre and in the BJP-ruled states and has exposed the chinks in their armour (the growing brazenness of the right-wing forces, the Lalit Modi fallout and the Vyapam-related incidents). Thereafter, Salman Khurshid turns the spotlight on a range of significant and highly relevant topics, such as international relations (with an emphasis on Pakistan and the USA), the Election Commission’s role, communalism, minority affairs (especially the problems affecting the Muslims), the judiciary (and its overreach), the Nirbhaya tragedy and corruption and its impact, with a cameo on the Anna Hazare movement. Here is an insider’s perspective that is not only incisive and insightful but also vital for understanding the recent events in the political arena and their far-reaching ramifications.

Book Ousmane Sembene and the Politics of Culture

Download or read book Ousmane Sembene and the Politics of Culture written by Lifongo J. Vetinde and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2014-11-12 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Undoubtedly one of Africa’s most influential first generation of writers and filmmakers, Ousmane Sembene's creative works of fiction as well as his films have been the subject of a considerable number of scholarly articles. The schemas of reading applied to Sembene's oeuvre (novels, short stories and films) have, in the main, focused either on his militant posture against colonialism, his disenchantment with African leadership, or his infatuation with documenting the past in an attempt to present a balanced and nuanced view of African history. While these studies, unquestionably contribute to a better understanding of his works, they collectively ignore Sembene’s relentless preoccupation with culture in his entire career as a writer and filmmaker. The collection of essays in Sembene and the Politics of Culture sets out to fill that gap as the contributors at once foreground Sembene’s fixation on the centrality of culture in the articulation of the discourse of national consciousness and reevaluate his intellectual and artistic legacy within an overarching framework of African liberation. The contributors critically reassess the ideological underpinnings of Sembene’s thoughts, his role as one of the foundational pillars of African cultural production, and his relevance in current discourses of nationhood. They do so through a wide variety of interdisciplinary approaches that draw on linguistics, feminist theory, film theory, historiography, Marxist criticism, psychoanalysis and a host of other approaches that give novel insights in the critical analysis of the works under study. In the part entitled “Testimonies," a collection of conversations with people who worked closely with Sembene, each of the interlocutors provide illuminating insights into the man's life and work. The variety of themes and critical approaches in this critical anthology will certainly be of interest not only to students and scholars of African literature and cinema at various levels of intellectual and cultural sophistication but also anyone interested in the analysis of the nexus between power, culture, and the discourse of liberation.

Book Sophocles

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jacques Jouanna
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2022-01-11
  • ISBN : 069124040X
  • Pages : 892 pages

Download or read book Sophocles written by Jacques Jouanna and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-11 with total page 892 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here, for the first time in English, is celebrated French classicist Jacques Jouanna's magisterial account of the life and work of Sophocles. Exhaustive and authoritative, this acclaimed book combines biography and detailed studies of Sophocles' plays, all set in the rich context of classical Greek tragedy and the political, social, religious, and cultural world of Athens's greatest age, the fifth century. Sophocles was the commanding figure of his day. The author of Oedipus Rex and Antigone, he was not only the leading dramatist but also a distinguished politician, military commander, and religious figure. And yet the evidence about his life has, until now, been fragmentary. Reconstructing a lost literary world, Jouanna has finally assembled all the available information, culled from inscriptions, archaeological evidence, and later sources. He also offers a huge range of new interpretations, from his emphasis on the significance of Sophocles' political and military offices (previously often seen as honorary) to his analysis of Sophocles' plays in the mythic and literary context of fifth-century drama. Written for scholars, students, and general readers, this book will interest anyone who wants to know more about Greek drama in general and Sophocles in particular. With an extensive bibliography and useful summaries not only of Sophocles' extant plays but also, uniquely, of the fragments of plays that have been partially lost, it will be a standard reference in classical studies for years to come.
