Book Faune des poissons d eaux douces et saum tres de l Afrique de l Ouest

Download or read book Faune des poissons d eaux douces et saum tres de l Afrique de l Ouest written by Didier Paugy and published by IRD Orstom. This book was released on 2003 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new reexamined and corrected fauna displays an up to date account of knowledge on the systematics of the fresh and brackish water fishes of West Africa. Its aim is to help ichthyologists with the identification of the species they collect. It is made practical and didactic by paying special attention to iconography and as far as possibly by giving priority to the simplest and easiest observable criteria. West Africa, from the Senegal River basin in the North West to the Chad basin in the North East and the Cross River in the South, includes the majority of the Sahelo-Sudan basins, except for the Nile, and the Western Guinea area, covering the Atlantic Coastal Basins from Guinea to Western Cote d'Ivoire. Specialists of each group or family were called to write the chapters. To facilitate the access of this fauna, an English translation is provided for all text. Summary tables, comparing morphological characters and measures for the different species, complement the identification keys. Distribution maps are provided for freshwater species. At present, 64 families are described, including 192 genera and 584 valid species. A reduced paper version is presented in two volumes; the integral CD-ROM version is inserted on the back cover of the second volume.

Book Marine Bivalves of Tropical West Africa

Download or read book Marine Bivalves of Tropical West Africa written by Rudo von Cosel and published by Companyédition MNHN/IRD. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bivalves are one of the most important groups of marine animals: they are abundant in benthic communities, they are sought after as seafood or ornament, and their shells are almost always conspicuous on the world's beaches. This identification guide for West African marine bivalves covers 462 species belonging to 59 families, based on an extensive material collected over several decades from Mauritania (Cap Blanc) to Angola (Baia dos Tigres), and now housed in in the French National Museum of Natural History. Therefore, any bivalve collected in the marine near-shore habitats of West Africa is most likely to be covered. Deep sea species (those normally collected below 500 meters depth, an additional 150 species) are listed but not treated at length. Profusely illustrated with over 3500 color and 1600 greyscale photographs, 800 stippled drawings, and an average of twelve views per species, the book is intended to be both the definitive resource and accessible to the non-specialist. Each species receives a description accompanied by a drawing of the interior showing the diagnostic details of the hinge and internal impressions and a photographic plate showing a selection of specimens from different localities across the species' range, an indication of distribution accompanied by a schematic map, an indication of habitat, and remarks, including comparisons with similar species. In the headings for each family, generic descriptions are illustrated with thumbnails of the included species to provide visual orientation. Morphological terms used in descriptions are explained in a glossary. Preceding these extensive taxonomic sections of the book is an introduction addressing the history of research, the physiography and hydrology of West African coasts, and the general characteristics of bivalves.

Book The Gulf of Guinea Large Marine Ecosystem

Download or read book The Gulf of Guinea Large Marine Ecosystem written by J.M. McGlade and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2002-08-15 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gulf of Guinea volume is part of a series on the Large Marine Ecosystems. This volume combines the latest research on the Gulf of Guinea from scientists working primarily in the region and from Europe. It covers the dynamics of the oceanic and coastal waters of the region, the major biological resources, pollution in the marine environment and the socio-economics and governance of marine fisheries. A significant number of new data sets, including some which have been repatriated from outside the region, are now made available through this publication. The combination of the various chapters underlines the interlinkages that exist between the interannual and seasonal dynamical behaviour of the oceanic offshore waters and the living marine resources along the coast, and the direct effect they have on the livelihoods of the populations living throughout the Gulf of Guinea. The volume is intended for those who have a general interest in the region as well as those who work professionally in the field. It will also be of immense value to resource managers and policy-makers as a demonstration project on how research can help solve the pressing problems of economic and food security in coastal regions.

Book Guide to the Identification of Genera of the Fish Order Ophidiiformes with a Tentative Classification of the Order

Download or read book Guide to the Identification of Genera of the Fish Order Ophidiiformes with a Tentative Classification of the Order written by Daniel M. Cohen and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Objectives of the paper are to provide dichotomous keys for the identification of ophidiiform genera. For each genus a brief account is presented including synonymy, a short diagnosis, a list of species, distribution, references, when possible comments on relationships, and for most an outline drawing. The genera are organized into an hierarchical classification which divides them into two suborders, Ophidioidei, which contains oviparous fishes with a high anterior nostril, and Bythitoidei which contains viviparous fishes with a low anterior nostril. Ophidioidei is divided into two families. Carapidae, with a vexillifer larval stage, has two subfamilies: Pyramodontinae with two genera and Carapinae with four. Ophidiidae has four subfamilies: Brotulinae, with a single genus; Brotulotaeniinae (new family) with a single genus; Ophidiinae, the cusk eels, with eight genera in two tribes; and Neobythitinae, with 38 genera (Epetriodus and Spottobrotula are new genera based on new species from the Indian Ocean) in two tribes. Bythitoidei contains two families, one of which, Aphyonidae has five genera characterized by many neotenic features. Bythitidae is divided into the free-tailed Brosmophycinae with 13 genera in two tribes and Bythitinae with 15 genera.
