Book The Marine Fauna of the British Isles and North West Europe Introduction and protozoans to arthropods

Download or read book The Marine Fauna of the British Isles and North West Europe Introduction and protozoans to arthropods written by P. J. Hayward and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first part of a comprehensive two-volume treatise that describes and illustrates over 2,000 marine species, ranging from protozoans to fishes, native to the coastal waters of the British Isles and north-western Europe. The most complete account available of its kind, the books cover all benthic habitats, from the intertidal zone to a depth of approximately 30 meters. Each major animal group is covered, with information on the morphology, biology, ecology of representative species, and techniques for their collection and study. Estuarine and supralittoral faunas are also described. Identification is facilitated by dichotomous keys to families and then to genera and species. Short diagnostic accounts are given for each family and higher taxon, and descriptions of all species are followed by notes on their ecological and geographical distribution. Line drawings are also included to help clarify the material presented in the text.

Book In the Wrong Place Alien Marine Crustaceans Distribution Biology and Impacts

Download or read book In the Wrong Place Alien Marine Crustaceans Distribution Biology and Impacts written by Bella S. Galil and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Wrong Place: Alien Marine Crustaceans - Distribution, Biology And Impacts provides a unique view into the remarkable story of how shrimps, crabs, and lobsters – and their many relatives – have been distributed around the world by human activity, and the profound implications of this global reorganization of biodiversity for marine conservation biology. Many crustaceans form the base of marine food chains, and are often prominent predators and competitors acting as ecological engineers in marine ecosystems. Commencing in the 1800s global commerce began to move hundreds – perhaps thousands – of species of marine crustaceans across oceans and between continents, both intentionally and unintentionally. This book tells the story of these invasions from Arctic waters to tropical shores, highlighting not only the importance and impact of all prominent crustacean invasions in the world's oceans, but also the commercial exploitation of invasive crabs and shrimps. Topics explored for the first time in one volume include the historical roots of man's impact on crustacean biogeography, the global dispersal of crabs, barnacle invasions, insights into the potential scale of tropical invasions, the history of the world's most widely cultured shrimp, the invasive history and management of red king crabs in Norway, Chinese mitten crabs in England, and American blue crabs in Europe, the evolutionary ecology of green crabs, and many other subjects as well, touching upon all ocean shores.

Book Biology and Conservation of the European Sturgeon Acipenser sturio L 1758

Download or read book Biology and Conservation of the European Sturgeon Acipenser sturio L 1758 written by Patrick WILLIOT and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-08-24 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book aims at synthesizing our current knowledge of Acipenser sturio and its management. This species, one of the most widespread sturgeon species all over Western Europe ranging from the Black Sea to the Baltic, is now on the verge of extinction. Major aspects of its biology and management, including mismanagement, are provided in a historic perspective. Similarly, the changes in the restoration programs (in situ and ex situ) initiated in France and Germany are presented. As the species occurred in sympatry with Acipenser oxyrinchus in Germany and Poland and very recently in France as well, a brief outlook on restoration-management programs of A. oxyrinchus are also provided for both North America and Northern European countries, namely Germany and Poland. As conservation-restoration actions go beyond scientific issues, non-governmental stakeholders and marine professional fishermen’s organizations have also been asked to contribute, and the key role of a French-German cooperation plan is underlined. A part of the book is devoted to perspectives. Illustrations of the European sturgeon, mainly in photographs, but also in stamps and paintings, are presented.

Book The Application of Ichnology to Palaeoenvironmental and Stratigraphic Analysis

Download or read book The Application of Ichnology to Palaeoenvironmental and Stratigraphic Analysis written by D. McIlroy and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2004 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been increasingly realized by sedimentologist in the petroleum industry and academia that integration of ichonological information into sedimentological models, and vice versa, is one of the main means by which we can improve our understanding of ancient depositional environments. This volume aims to provide an analytical review of yhe ichnology of all major depositional environments and the use ichnology in biostratigraphic and sequence stratigraphic analysis, as well as highly refined palaeeoenvironmental studies. The remit of the book is achieved through a combination of review articles and novel research papers that outline methodologies and protocols for improving our understanding of ancient palaeoenvironments. Trace fossils from microscopic borings to dinosaur footprints are considered.

Book Recruitment Colonization and Physical Chemical Forcing in Marine Biological Systems

Download or read book Recruitment Colonization and Physical Chemical Forcing in Marine Biological Systems written by Susanne Baden and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 32nd European Marine Biology Symposium was held in Lysekil, Sweden on August 16-22, 1997, organised by Kristineberg Marine Research Station. The selected topics were: `Recruitment and colonisation' and `Physical and Chemical Forcing on Marine Biological Systems', partly reflecting the present research interests at Kristineberg. In this volume, recruitment and colonisation processes cover primarily the dynamics of interspecific interactions within assemblages as well as the effects of hydrodynamic variables. Both laboratory and field studies are emphasised. The contribution of papers within the topic `Physical and Chemical Forcing on Marine Biological Systems' deals with structuring effects of, for example, tides, temperatures, nutrients and hypoxia on the physiology and ecology of marine organisms. The book covers many aspects of marine life. It is our hope that the selected topics will fascinate readers and be of wide interest to students and researchers in marine biology.
