Download or read book Peace Mom written by Cindy Sheehan and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2006-09-26 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Writing this book is the second most difficult thing I have ever done, next to burying Casey." On April 4, 2004, Cindy Sheehan learned that Casey, the eldest of her four children, had been killed in Iraq, where he was serving in the United States Army. After struggling through crippling grief for three weeks, she came to an epiphany: "I will spend my life trying to make Casey's sacrifice count for peace and love, not killing and hate." Peace Mom is the heartfelt and profoundly moving story of Cindy's journey to activism. She recounts the dark days following Casey's death, when it seemed her life would never have meaning again. She tells of her June 2004 meeting with President Bush, and how that encounter ultimately set her on a path that would take her to hearings in the Capitol, test old friendships and family ties, and culminate outside Crawford, Texas, in a monthlong peace action that would draw thousands of supporters and worldwide attention. Here are the stories Cindy has never shared before about her own experiences at the center of a media firestorm, the life-altering events that were sparked by her simple act of defiance one hot August day in Texas. Going behind the headlines and sound bites, Cindy writes candidly about the toll her activism has taken on her own life and her family, as well the unforeseen rewards her quest for peace has brought. Through days of rage, despair, laughter, and tears, Cindy has found ways to celebrate the life of her son Casey and give meaning to his death. Her story points the way to a future of peace and justice for the world and for our children. Heartrending and powerful, Peace Mom is at once an honest account of one woman's triumph over loss and a clarion call to all those who wonder if they can make a difference.

Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling author Jude Deveraux brings a “wonderful addition” (Booklist) to her Montgomery/Taggert Family series with this supernatural romance in which, with the help of a feisty ghost, a man uncovers the secrets that led to the tragic death of his fiancée. After three years, Jace Montgomery is still grieving over his fiancée Stacy’s mysterious suicide. He hasn’t been interested in another woman since her passing, and her family still blames him for her death. While flipping through one of her old paperbacks, Jace discovers a photo of a house stuck between the pages, bearing the cryptic message: “Ours again. Together forever. See you there.” The note was dated the day before her death. Obsessed by the possibility of understanding her suicide, Jace seeks out the property—Priory House, a big brick fortress in Margate, England—and buys it. It doesn’t take long to learn that the house is haunted by a headstrong and feisty ghost, Ann Stuart, whom he must tangle with if he’s ever to solve the mystery. Ann died under circumstances similar to those of his late fiancée, and he has a hunch that there is a connection between the two. Through his own investigations and with the help of a beautiful foreign correspondent, Jace is forced to reconcile his fiancée’s life and her death. What follows is a satisfying and seductive discovery of both time and love by one of America’s favorite storytellers.

This book was released on 2022-08-03 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pirmasens, their hometown in Germany, was one of the first cities that required the citizens to evacuate as the town was located in close proximity to the French border. The adventures started with the first evacuation from Pirmasens. The evacuees were required to report to the local train station and taken to a safe city by train. During the evacuations, the family was often attacked by machine gun fire from the vertical dive bombers known as Stucka’s. Among other adventures, they found bones of an aborted baby in the woods after they had evacuated their hometown. Going for days without food was not uncommon. They became very creative about obtaining food, clothing, and other necessities which were in rare supply. Pauline recalls the postwar time in 1945 when the Americans came into town to take control. Hitler portrayed the enemy as dark, hunched-over creatures. Posters were hung throughout every city, depicting the enemy. Surprisingly enough, Inge met the first time an American who was tall and handsome, nothing like the creature she expected to see. That was also the first time she ever tasted chewing gum. Chewing gum was the treat the American soldiers handed to the German children during the first encounter. Soon thereafter, the family received care packages from American citizens with food, toys, and clothing. The postwar years were plagued with people starving. At least, shortly after the war, August was able to return home to his family. Together, August and Pauline were able to assure the family that the war was over and now begins the journey of becoming valued members of the German society.
