Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Indians of North and South America No accurate account can be given of their numbers. Some have estimated the whole amount in North and South America, at the time of the discovery Of the continent, even as high as one hundred or one hun dred and fifty millions. This estimate is unquestionably much too large. A more probable one would be from fifteen or twenty to twenty-five millions. But they have greatly diminished, and of all the ancient race not more than four or five millions, if so many, now remain. Pestilence, wars, hardships, and sufferings of various kinds have been their lot for nearly four hundred years; and they have melted away at the approach Of the white man; so that even a lone In dian is now scarcely found beside the grave of his fathers, where once the war-whoop might have called a thousand or more valiant men to go forth to engage in the deadly fray. With them have perished, in many instances, their ancient traditions; and as they had no other means of handing down the records of their deeds, their history is lost, except here and there a fragment, which has been treasured up by some white man more curious than his fellows, in studying their present or former fates. Monuments, indeed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indian Races of North and South America In describing the adventures and proceedings of the pioneers in the settlement and civilization of the Western Continent, the interesting nature of the narrative may have led the author, in some from the immediate obj ect of his attention, viz.: the manners, peculiari ties, and history of the aboriginal inhabitants. He trusts, however, that where this may appear to be the case, it will generally be found to have resulted from the inseparable manner in which the history of the natives and those who have supplanted them is interwoven. Book The Civilization of the South American Indians

Download or read book The Civilization of the South American Indians written by Rafael Karsten and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-24 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Civilization of the South American Indians: With Special Reference to Magic and Religion So far as the lower forms of civilization are concerned, there are, Iext to sociological field-work, no other investigations so urgently Ieeded as monographs on definite classes of social phenomena among t certain group of related tribes. Social facts are largely influenced Jy local conditions, by the physical environment, by the circum tances in which the people in question live, by their habits and Dental characteristics; and all these factors can, of course, much nore easily be taken into account when the investigation is confined o a single people, or one ethnic unit, than when it embraces a class )f phenomena as existing throughout the whole uncivilized world. Dr. Karsten's book combines the merits of the field-ethnologist with zhose of the monographer on a larger scale. His equipment for his ask is exceptional. He is a trained sociologist, and an acute and houghtful observer. He went to South America for the express ourpose of studying its native tribes. He has spent five years in zlose contact with savages in different parts of the continent, and earned their language. And he has carefully searched all the available iterature relating to the customs and beliefs of Indians in the various parts of the vast area with which he is dealing, and has thus been able to present, and comment upon, a large mass of facts falling mtside the field for his own direct inquiries and personal observa ion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Indians of North and South America When America was first discovered, it was found to be inhabited by a race of men different from any already known. They were called Indians, from the West Indies, where they were first seen, and which Columbus, according to the common opinion of that age, sup posed to be a part of the East Indies. On exploring the coasts and the interior of the vast continent, the same singular people, in different varieties, were every where discovered. Their general conformation and features, character, habits, and customs were too evidently alike not to render it proper to class them under the same common name; and yet there were sufficient diversities, in these respects, to allow of grouping them in minor divisions, as families or tribes. These frequently took their names from the parts of the country where they lived. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Indians, North of Mexico In the second place, it is readily to he remarked that interest in the study, both cultural and descriptive, of this branch of the world's family, is, particularly in America, constantly increasing. As the original data disappear, so do new generations realise the value of What has passed, and every portion of history or folklore thus preserved and studied becomes to the highest degree valuable and interesting. Many Americans of to - day, especially those of the middle and far west, may be direct descendants of those hardy pioneers or frontiers men who were, but a few years since, either friends or foes of the original inhabitants of the lands they now occupy. These or like instances are, for the most part, well within the memory of the living, and this interest, already well advanced, will continually develop. Book A Faithful Account of the Race

Download or read book A Faithful Account of the Race written by Stephen G. Hall and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2009-10-15 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The civil rights and black power movements expanded popular awareness of the history and culture of African Americans. But, as Stephen Hall observes, African American authors, intellectuals, ministers, and abolitionists had been writing the history of the black experience since the 1800s. With this book, Hall recaptures and reconstructs a rich but largely overlooked tradition of historical writing by African Americans. Hall charts the origins, meanings, methods, evolution, and maturation of African American historical writing from the period of the Early Republic to the twentieth-century professionalization of the larger field of historical study. He demonstrates how these works borrowed from and engaged with ideological and intellectual constructs from mainstream intellectual movements including the Enlightenment, Romanticism, Realism, and Modernism. Hall also explores the creation of discursive spaces that simultaneously reinforced and offered counternarratives to more mainstream historical discourse. He sheds fresh light on the influence of the African diaspora on the development of historical study. In so doing, he provides a holistic portrait of African American history informed by developments within and outside the African American community.
