Download or read book Glycoconjugate Research written by John Gregory and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glycoconjugate Research, Volume II contains the proceedings of the Fourth International Symposium on Glycoconjugates held in Woods Hole, Massachusetts in 1977. The papers explore the biosynthesis and regulation of glycoconjugates, particularly those of cell membranes, and glycolipid storage diseases. This volume is comprised of 95 chapters divided into three sections. After reviewing the regulatory mechanisms underlying glycoprotein synthesis, it turns to enzymic modifications of sialic acids in the course of glycoconjugate biosynthesis. The following chapters focus on the biosynthesis and characterization of lipid-linked sugars in the outer membrane of liver mitochondria; effect of bacitracin on the biosynthesis of dolichol derivatives in calf pancreas microsomes; secretion of proteoglycans by chondrocytes; and heterogeneity of arterial proteoglycans. The biosynthesis of elastin by chondroblasts in monolayer cultures is also considered, along with the phosphorylation of proteoglycans in human articular cartilage. The final chapter describes a double-antibody radioimmunoassay for soluble and cell-surface blood group Ii antigens. This book will be a useful resource for biochemists.

Download or read book Interactions of Energy and Climate written by W. Bach and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginning of industrialization in the last century, a steady increase in energy consumption can be observed. At the same time, energy generation switched from wood and coal to predominantly oil, coal and natural gas. Soon, many countries became aware of the fact that the resources of fossil fuels, especially of oil and natural gas are finite. Diversification of energy sources became a requirement for the future. Governments expressed their concern by setting up natural energy programmes while international organisations undertook assessments of the global energy resources and possible rates of supply and substitution. When it comes to setting up energy policies, the following factors must be taken into consideration: population growth, level and nature of socio-economic activity, the costs of energy, the adequacy and reliability of supply, the availability of technology and supporting infrastructure, the success of energy conservation programmes and concern about the environment, safety aspects of production and use of energy as well as educational efforts toward a rational use of energy. When we express our most urgent concern, the long-term global energy provision, experts offer four interrelated partial strategies: - the strategy of rational use and conservation of energy - the strategy of using renewable energy sources - the coal strategy including coal gasification and liquefaction - the nuclear power strategy. Any strategy, however, for securing future energy supply has, from my point of view, to be thoroughly examined as to its impact on the environment.
Download or read book The Archaeological and Forensic Applications of Microfossils A Deeper Understanding of Human History The Archaeological and Forensic Applications of Microfossils written by M. Williams and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2017-06-16 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microfossils are an abundant component of the sedimentary rock record. Their analysis can reveal not only the environments in which the rocks were deposited, but also their age. When combined, the spatial and temporal distribution patterns of microfossils offer enormous utility for archaeological and forensic investigations. Their presence can act as a geological ‘fingerprint’ and the tiniest fragment of material, such as a broken Iron Age potsherd, can contain a microfossil signature that reveals the geographical source of the materials under investigation. This book explores how microfossils are employed as tools to interpret human society and habitation throughout history. Examples include microfossil evidence associated with Palaeolithic human occupation at Boxgrove in Sussex, alongside investigations into human-induced landscape change during the Holocene. Further examples include the use of microfossils to provenance the source materials of Iron Age ceramics, Roman mosaics and Minoan pottery, in addition to their application to help solve modern murder cases, highlighting the diverse applications of microfossils to improving our understanding of human history.

Download or read book Chemistry3 written by Andrew Burrows and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 1429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemistry is widely considered to be the central science: it encompasses concepts on which all other branches of science are developed. Yet, for many students entering university, gaining a firm grounding in chemistry is a real challenge. Chemistry3 responds to this challenge, providingstudents with a full understanding of the fundamental principles of chemistry on which to build later studies.Uniquely amongst the introductory chemistry texts currently available, Chemistry3's author team brings together experts in each of organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry with specialists in chemistry education to provide balanced coverage of the fundamentals of chemistry in a way that studentsboth enjoy and understand. The result is a text that builds on what students know already from school and tackles their misunderstandings and misconceptions, thereby providing a seamless transition from school to undergraduate study. Written with unrivalled clarity, students are encouraged to engage with the text andappreciate the central role that chemistry plays in our lives through the unique use of real-world context and photographs.Chemistry3 tackles head-on two issues pervading chemistry education: students' mathematical skills, and their ability to see the subject as a single, unified discipline. Instead of avoiding the maths, Chemistry3 provides structured support, in the form of careful explanations, reminders of keymathematical concepts, step-by-step calculations in worked examples, and a Maths Toolkit, to help students get to grips with the essential mathematical element of chemistry. Frequent cross-references highlight the connections between each strand of chemistry and explain the relationship between thetopics, so students can develop an understanding of the subject as a whole.Digital formats and resourcesChemistry3 is available for students and institutions to purchase in a variety of formats, and is supported by online resources. The e-book offers a mobile experience and convenient access along with functionality tools, navigation features, and links that offer extra learning support: www.oxfordtextbooks.co.uk/ebooksThe e-book also features interactive animations of molecular structures, screencasts in which authors talk step-by-step through selected examples and key reaction mechanisms, and self-assessment activities for each chapter. Book excerpt: Over the past few decades, the book series Linguistische Arbeiten [Linguistic Studies], comprising over 500 volumes, has made a significant contribution to the development of linguistic theory both in Germany and internationally. The series will continue to deliver new impulses for research and maintain the central insight of linguistics that progress can only be made in acquiring new knowledge about human languages both synchronically and diachronically by closely combining empirical and theoretical analyses. To this end, we invite submission of high-quality linguistic studies from all the central areas of general linguistics and the linguistics of individual languages which address topical questions, discuss new data and advance the development of linguistic theory.
Download or read book Post translational Modification of Proteins by Lipids written by Urs Brodbeck and published by Springer. This book was released on 1988-10-17 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing interest in recent years in the anchoring to membranes of proteins by post translational modification is documented by the large number of publications which ap peared in this field. In September 1987, scientists from 10 countries from all over the world met in the resort village of Les Diablerets, Switzerland, to discuss the most recent advances made in this field. The sessions were devoted to the anchoring of membrane proteins by cova lent attachment of fatty acids and of glycophospholipids. The workshop brought together many scientists working on vastly different proteins such as the variant surface glycoprotein of Trypanosomes and antigens of the mammalian cells. The subject of the workshop unified many scientists who had not met before and thus greatly stimulated interdisciplinary work. In addition to the lectures, each participant was provided with a collection of Methods currently in use in the study of membrane proteins anchored by post-translational modifica tion. An updated version of this collection is now presented as a Laboratory Manual, and the techniques described therein will give researchers easy and practical access to the investiga tion of post-translationally modified proteins. The publication of the present book by Springer follows an established tradition of previously published manuals on the handling of membrane proteins. Our thanks go to the authors who made the essential contribution in writing and adapting the experimental protocols, to Mrs. R.

Download or read book Foreign Compound Metabolism in Mammals written by D E Hathway and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside flap of this volume.
