Book The Manor Three Centuries at a Slave Plantation on Long Island

Download or read book The Manor Three Centuries at a Slave Plantation on Long Island written by Mac Griswold and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2013-07-02 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mac Griswold's The Manor is the biography of a uniquely American place that has endured through wars great and small, through fortunes won and lost, through histories bright and sinister—and of the family that has lived there since its founding as a Colonial New England slave plantation three and a half centuries ago. In 1984, the landscape historian Mac Griswold was rowing along a Long Island creek when she came upon a stately yellow house and a garden guarded by looming boxwoods. She instantly knew that boxwoods that large—twelve feet tall, fifteen feet wide—had to be hundreds of years old. So, as it happened, was the house: Sylvester Manor had been held in the same family for eleven generations. Formerly encompassing all of Shelter Island, New York, a pearl of 8,000 acres caught between the North and South Forks of Long Island, the manor had dwindled to 243 acres. Still, its hidden vault proved to be full of revelations and treasures, including the 1666 charter for the land, and correspondence from Thomas Jefferson. Most notable was the short and steep flight of steps the family had called the "slave staircase," which would provide clues to the extensive but little-known story of Northern slavery. Alongside a team of archaeologists, Griswold began a dig that would uncover a landscape bursting with stories. Based on years of archival and field research, as well as voyages to Africa, the West Indies, and Europe, The Manor is at once an investigation into forgotten lives and a sweeping drama that captures our history in all its richness and suffering. It is a monumental achievement.

Book Chartwell Manor

Download or read book Chartwell Manor written by Glenn Head and published by Fantagraphics Books. This book was released on 2021-05-25 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No one asks for the childhood they get, and no child ever deserved to go to Chartwell Manor. For Glenn Head, his two years spent at the now-defunct Mendham, NJ, boarding school ― run by a serial sexual and emotional abuser of young boys in the early 1970s ― left emotional scars in ways that he continues to process. This graphic memoir ― a book almost 50 years in the making ― tells the story of that experience, and then delves with even greater detail into the reverberations of that experience in adulthood, including addiction and other self-destructive behavior. Head tells his story with unsparing honesty, depicting himself as a deeply flawed human struggling to make sense of the childhood he was given.

Book excerpt: Minley Manor was a large family house that became part of a military training establishment and then an Officers Mess for the Corps of Royal Engineers. Yet the story of Minley Manor is also a story about the Currie family, whose three generations living at Minley created a magnificent manor house in an innovative architectural style. In Minley Manor, author Major Ian C Mattison shares the untold history of Minley Manor and the Currie familys hand in making it into a hidden jewel on the borders of North Hampshire and Surrey. After coming into possession of some long-lost documents and a narrative history of the manor, Ian offers a tribute to the manor and to the Currie family. First exploring the manors compelling architectural history and design, we are beckoned to look deeper into the manor to discover the fascinating story of a family involved in the political and financial affairs of the United Kingdom and at the heart of government. Minley Manor is a story not just about the buildings, the estate, and the gardens; it is the story of four generations of the Currie family who dwelt there. The Currie family of Minley may well have been passed over in history, but the hope is that they may now take their rightful place as a dynasty who did indeed make significant and very worthwhile contributions to the very fabric of English society in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The CHAMBER AND THE CROSS is a contemporary thriller wrapped around a medieval romance. News of her mother's mysterious death brings Laura back to England, and to Bannock Manor, a crumbling, stately home in the Cotswolds. The house and all its problems now belong to her. While attempting to replace antiquated plumbing, Laura uncovers a skeleton beneath the courtyard. The local villagers wonder if that explains the ghost who haunts the manor, but a more menacing intruder, one very much alive, is also lurking about the halls. Todd Woodbridge, a university professor, is writing a book on the source of materials for medieval construction, and Bannock Manor is the perfect specimen. Unfortunately, time is running out, not only for the preservation of the house, but for the lives of its inhabitants. Centuries before, Brian Bannock fought his way into a position of minor nobility. It was a time when nobles were moving out of fortified castles and into more comfortable and prestigious manor houses. He built Bannock Manor as part of his legacy, but his deepest desires eluded him. In 1453, the Hundred Years' War between England and France was over, but in England the Wars of the Roses had just begun. Lorraine Bonville, a young French girl, was caught up in political alliances that threatened her life. Forced to flee her chateau and cross the English Channel, the only thing she had left was a dowry of regrets. Her fate was tied to Lord Bannock, a man twenty-five years her senior, and to the beautiful manor house he built for her. Jacques Dannes never belonged anywhere, or had anything, except the forbidden love of Lorraine. Theirs was a passion that lingered in the walls of the estate long after they were gone. From castles in their full glory to the ruins of war, this novel weaves a beautiful tapestry of history, architecture, the struggle to rebuild life and love, and the desire to protect a very special home.
