Book The Maitland Quarto Manuscript

Download or read book The Maitland Quarto Manuscript written by William Alexander Craigie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-08 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Maitland Quarto Manuscript: Containing Poems by Sir Richard Maitland, Arbuthnot, and Others In this edition, in which the full contents of the manu script are printed for the first time, the original has been followed page for page, and the different styles of hand writing have been indicated by the use of different types. Those pieces which are written in the Scottish hand are printed in ordinary roman type, with the contractions expanded in italics; those in the Italian hand are closely reproduced in italic lettering, with the few contractions retained. An endeavour has also been made to reproduce the more ornamental hands, the capital letters, and scribal ourishes, and in general to convey as distinct an idea of the appearance of the original as could readily be done in print. With a very few exceptions the occasional errors of the scribe have not been corrected in the text, but are pointed out in the notes at the end of the volume. Book Biblical Epics in Late Antiquity and Anglo Saxon England

Download or read book Biblical Epics in Late Antiquity and Anglo Saxon England written by Patrick McBrine and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2017-06-30 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biblical poetry, written between the fourth and eleventh centuries, is an eclectic body of literature that disseminated popular knowledge of the Bible across Europe. Composed mainly in Latin and subsequently in Old English, biblical versification has much to tell us about the interpretations, genre preferences, reading habits, and pedagogical aims of medieval Christian readers. Biblical Epics in Late Antiquity and Anglo-Saxon England provides an accessible introduction to biblical epic poetry. Patrick McBrine’s erudite analysis of the writings of Juvencus, Cyprianus, Arator, Bede, Alcuin, and more reveals the development of a hybridized genre of writing that informed and delighted its Christian audiences to such an extent it was copied and promoted for the better part of a millennium. The volume contains many first-time readings and discussions of poems and passages which have long lain dormant and offers new evidence for the reception of the Bible in late Antiquity and the Middle Ages.

Download or read book Fresche fontanis written by J. Derrick McClure and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-09-18 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fresche fontanis contains twenty-five studies presenting major new research by leading scholars in Scottish culture of the late fourteenth and fifteenth, sixteenth, and seventeenth centuries. The three-part collection includes essays on the prominent writers of the period: James I, Robert Henryson, William Dunbar, John Bellenden, David Lyndsay, John Stewart of Baldynneis, William Fowler, Alexander Montgomerie, Andrew Melville and Alexander Craig. There are also essays on the Scottish romances Lancelot of the Laik, Gilbert Hay’s Buik of King Alexander the Conquerour, The Buik of Alexander, Golagros and Gawain, and the comedic Rauf Coilyear, and the Scottish fabliau The Freiris of Berwick. Chronicles of Fordun, Bower, Wyntoun and Bellenden receive fresh attention in essays concerning Margaret of Scotland, and imperial ideas during the reign of James V. Essays on anthologies, family books, and collaborative compilations make another notable group, providing in-depth analysis, with findings not previously reported, of The Book of the Dean of Lismore, the Maitland Quarto manuscript and The Delitiae Poetarum Scotorum. These studies are enlarged by others on key contextualizing topics, including noble and royal literary patronage, early Scottish printing, performance, spectatorship, and translation. Together they make a significant contribution to a full understanding of the continuities and shifts in cultural emphases during this most imaginatively productive period.

Book Sappho in Early Modern England

Download or read book Sappho in Early Modern England written by Harriette Andreadis and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2001-07-02 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Sappho in Early Modern England, Harriette Andreadis examines public and private expressions of female same-sex sexuality in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century England. Before the language of modern sexual identities developed, a variety of discourses in both literary and extraliterary texts began to form a lexicon of female intimacy. Looking at accounts of non-normative female sexualities in travel narratives, anatomies, and even marital advice books, Andreadis outlines the vernacular through which a female same-sex erotics first entered verbal consciousness. She finds that "respectable" women of the middle classes and aristocracy who did not wish to identify themselves as sexually transgressive developed new vocabularies to describe their desires; women that we might call bisexual or lesbian, referred to in their day as tribades, fricatrices, or "rubsters," emerged in erotic discourses that allowed them to acknowledge their sexuality and still evade disapproval.

Book The Literary Culture of Early Modern Scotland

Download or read book The Literary Culture of Early Modern Scotland written by Sebastiaan Verweij and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains the literary history of Scotland in the early modern period (1560-1625) by investigating what was the most important way of publishing such literature (mostly poetry): the manuscript. It organises the majority of surviving manuscripts by three different types of place where they were written and read: 1) the royal court, 2) the city, and 3) the country. It has long been believed that the renaissance in Scotland was a disappointing affair, butthis book argues that in fact it has long been misunderstood: the contents of little-known manuscripts paint a picture of a much more interesting cultural history than was previously known.

Book Cultural Repertoires

  • Author : G. J. Dorleijn
  • Publisher : Peeters Publishers
  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN : 9789042912991

Download or read book Cultural Repertoires written by G. J. Dorleijn and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is apparent that every linguistic and literary tradition will wish to distinguish broad periods in its historical evolution. One way of demarcating such periods is by isolating and identifying dominant repertoires of texts, styles or types, which may be seen as preserving repositories of material, promoting literary models, privileging formal constraints, or inspiring theoretical reflections - or all of these. The present collection of studies represents the results of a colloquium held at the University of Groningen in 2001. The contributions range widely in area, time, and theme: from general theory of acceptation into the canon to particular case studies; from overall descriptions of cultural repertoires to their very manufacture; from Ancient Mesopotamia to the European avant-garde - taking in Homeric Greece, the Arabic world, the Middle Ages, Renaissance Humanism, and modern Dutch literature along the way.
