Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Earth in Space: A Manual of Astronomical Geography This little manual is a condensed and simplified version of a Mathematical Geography published several years ago. It has been prepared in compliance with the request of the late Miss Lucretia Crocker, a supervisor of the Boston Public Schools, and of many other advocates of more thorough instruction in this branch. It is designed for Grammar Schools, and for High and Normal Schools where Astronomy is not prescribed, but where an hour a day for a few days can be spared for this most practical department of Astronomy. The proofs have been read by Dr. J. R. Webster, Mr. C.F. King, and others. At the suggestion of several of these readers, certain passages which may be found too difficult for Grammar-School classes are marked with the character (f). The substance of these passages may be given orally by the teacher, or, if necessary, they may be omitted altogether. Those wishing a fuller presentation of the more difficult topics are referred to the larger work mentioned above. • Publisher : Princeton University Press

Download or read book Ptolemy s Almagest written by Ptolemy and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1998-11-08 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ptolemy's Almagest is one of the most influential scientific works in history. A masterpiece of technical exposition, it was the basic textbook of astronomy for more than a thousand years, and still is the main source for our knowledge of ancient astronomy. This translation, based on the standard Greek text of Heiberg, makes the work accessible to English readers in an intelligible and reliable form. It contains numerous corrections derived from medieval Arabic translations and extensive footnotes that take account of the great progress in understanding the work made in this century, due to the discovery of Babylonian records and other researches. It is designed to stand by itself as an interpretation of the original, but it will also be useful as an aid to reading the Greek text.

Book World maps for Finding the Direction and Distance to Mecca

Download or read book World maps for Finding the Direction and Distance to Mecca written by David King and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-09-06 with total page 670 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two remarkable Iranian world-maps were discovered in 1989 and 1995. Both are made of brass and date from 17th-century Iran. Mecca is at the centre and a highly sophisticated longitude and latitude grid enables the user to determine the direction and distance to Mecca for anywhere in the world between Andalusia and China. Prior to the discovery of these maps it was thought that such cartographic grids were conceived in Europe ca. 1910. This richly-illustrated book presents an overview of the ways in which Muslims over the centuries have determined the sacred direction towards Mecca (qibla) and then describes the two world-maps in detail. The author shows that the geographical data derives from a 15th-century Central Asian source and that the mathematics underlying the grid was developed in 9th-century Baghdad.
