Book The magician Prospero in Shakespeare s The Tempest A true Renaissance magus

Download or read book The magician Prospero in Shakespeare s The Tempest A true Renaissance magus written by Juliane Strätz and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2014-08-22 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, University of Potsdam (Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik), language: English, abstract: In Renaissance, the magus, the adept of natural magic, was considered a powerful man. He was not only aware of natural, mystical and magical phenomena but also of the “innate ideas within the mens”, which is the “intuitive, suprarational faculty within the soul”. He was seen as the good and white magician. Many scholars and intellectuals were either engaged in magic or at least knew about it. In the 16th and 17th century many writers, like Shakespeare and Marlowe, adopted the figure of the white or black magician in their works. In William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” the main character is Prospero, who is a powerful magician, too. He uses his magical powers to govern all events on the island and wants to leave nothing to chance. In doing so he uses different tools for magical support. He is a master of a learned art which enables him to use magical equipment like books, a staff or a magic garment. Moreover he commands natural spirits to play out a mimesis, which makes nothing on the island what it seems to be. Nevertheless, all of these actions follow a higher moral function. Prospero’s morality is shattered after the usurpation and betrayal of his brother. With the help of the power that he has on the island, he wants to “purge the evil from the inhabitants of his world and restore them to goodness” (Egan 175). In this process he is often very short-sighted and so he mistakes his powers with godliness and humanity with goodness. This paper wants to examine Prospero, the magus and thus asks the question, whether this figure depicts the natural magus of Renaissance times. Elementary to this examination is the assumption that Renaissance magic is real magic. People then considered their magic, miracles, spirits etc. real and not a trick. Thus when I speak about Renaissance magic, it is meant to be just as real as the people in Renaissance times considered it.

It is a magical romance, yet deeply and problematically embedded in seventeenth-century debates about authority and power. David Lindley's Introduction and commentary focus upon contemporary texts, attending to the implications of Prospero's magic, his political and paternal ambitions, and the controversial issue of his 'colonialist' control of Caliban. The Tempest was also Shakespeare's response to the new opportunities offered by the Blackfriars theatre, and careful attention is given to the play's dramatic form, stage-craft, and use of music and spectacle, to demonstrate its uniquely experimental nature.

Book excerpt: When King Alonso of Naples and his entourage sail home for Italy after attending his daughter Claribel's wedding in Tunis, Africa, they encounter a violent tempest. Everyone jumps overboard and are washed ashore on a strange island inhabited by the magician Prospero who has deliberately conjured up the storm. Who is this Prospero and why does he conjure the tempest? What is the power that he has on the spirits inhabiting the island, especially the half human, half savage Caliban?A delightful romantic drama with undertones of betrayal and retribution, domination and subjugation, The Tempest remains to this day one of the more popular plays written by Shakespeare. The themes of freedom, friendship, repentance and forgiveness are beautifully treated, and by the end of the play, the tempest - both real and figurative - has calmed the most vengeful of avengers and washed away the sins of the most evil of wrongdoers.

Download or read book The Tempest The Works of William Shakespeare Illustrated written by William Shakespeare and published by . This book was released on 2020-12-08 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tempest is a play by William Shakespeare, probably written in 1610-1611, and thought to be one of the last plays that Shakespeare wrote alone. After the first scene, which takes place on a ship at sea during a tempest, the rest of the story is set on a remote island, where the sorcerer Prospero, a complex and contradictory character, lives with his daughter Miranda, and his two servants-Caliban, a savage monster figure, and Ariel, an airy spirit. The play contains music and songs that evoke the spirit of enchantment on the island. It explores many themes, including magic, betrayal, revenge, and family. In Act IV, a wedding masque serves as a play-within-the play, and contributes spectacle, allegory, and elevated language.

Book excerpt: Prospero, sorcerer and rightful Duke of Milan, along with his daughter Miranda, has lived on an island for many years since his position was usurped by his brother Antonio. Then, as Antonio's ship passes near the island one day, Prospero conjures up a terrible storm... A short and juicy play that encapsulates many of the dramatic elements that delight admirers of the Shakespearean oeuvre: betrayal, good spirits, evil relations, loyal friends, dramatic plot twists, terrible weather and, of course, love. The play is entertaining and introduces timeless themes such as redemption, the nature of the soul, magic and the supernatural, and art's imitation of life (and vice versa). The story itself shows us the essence of the traditional Italian commedia dell'arte.

Book John Dee The World of the Elizabethan Magus

Download or read book John Dee The World of the Elizabethan Magus written by Peter J. French and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1987. John Dee was Renaissance England's first Hermetic magus, a philosopher magician. He was also a respected practical scientist, an immensely learned man who investigated all areas of knowledge. In this fine biography, Peter French shows that not only magic and science, but geography, antiquarianism, theology and the fine arts were fields in which Dee was deeply involved. Through his teaching, writing and friendships with many of the most important figures of the age, Dee was at the centre of great affairs and had a profound influence on major developments in sixteenth-century England. Peter French places this extraordinary individual within his proper historical context, describing the whole world of Renaissance science, Platonism and Hermetic magic.
