Download or read book Fairy Gold A Book of Old English Fairy Tales Illustrated by Herbert Cole written by Ernest Rhys and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fairy Gold: A Book of Old English Fairy Tales was compiled by Ernest Rhys (1859 – 1946) and illustrated by Herbert Cole (1867 – 1930). Rhys was a famed writer and editor – best known for his role as founder of the ‘Everyman’s Library’, a series of affordable classics. Rhys was passionate about English folkloric tradition, and making such wonderful works of literature accessible to the common people. The book starts with a quotation from Shakespeare’s A Winter’s Tale, informing the reader that: ‘This is fairy Gold boy; and t’will prove so...’ From here on in, it is a text to amuse, delight, scare and inform – all in equal measures – for young and old alike. Fairy Gold contains a set of wonderful black and white illustrations by Herbert Cole, as well as such well-known tales as ‘The Three Bears’, ‘Tom Thumb’, ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and ‘The Mermaid’ as well as other, near-forgotten English stories such as ‘The Fairy Fair’, ‘Mr and Mrs Vinegar’, ‘The King and the Vipers’ and ‘Queen Mab’s Good Grace.’ The text appears in its original translation, ensuring that none of the work’s initial brilliance is lost. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s literature – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration from the 1880s to the 1930s. Our collection showcases classic fairy tales, children’s stories, and the work of some of the most celebrated artists, illustrators and authors.

Download or read book AMERICAN INDIAN FAIRY TALES 17 Illustrated Fairy Tales written by Anon E. Mouse and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a collection of Native American folklore, retold for children and young adults, compiled over a century ago. Within you will find stories like Snowbird and the Water Tiger, The Coyote or Prairie Wolf, How Mad Buffalo Fought the Thunder-Bird, The Red Swan, The Bended Rocks and many more. You will even find a description of Iagoo the storyteller. This is the second edition of this book, which was originally published in 1895 and titled Snow Bird and the Water Tiger and other American Indian Tales. The uncredited illustrations are nice examples of children's book art from the period. The compiler, probably not a Native American herself, drew on authentic lore from a wide variety of culture regions, but sprinkled in stereotypical language and anomalous items from the woodland area like "squaw," "papoose," "wigwam". However, the author was obviously well-intentioned and, for her time, appears to have had a fairly progressive attitude. Notably, she preserves some of the motifs in the stories such as grotesque monsters and cross-dressing, which some other children's book authors of her day (and ours) might have glossed over. Of these works that of Afanasief is by far the most important, extending to nearly 3,000 pages, and containing 332 distinct stories—of many of which several variants are given, sometimes as many as five. Khudyakof’s collection contains 122 skazkas—as the Russian folk-tales are called—Erlenvein’s 41, and Chudinsky’s 31. Afanasief has also published a separate volume, containing 33 “legends,” and he has inserted a great number of stories of various kinds in his “Poetic views of the Old Slavonians about Nature,” a work to which I have had constant recourse Fairy Tales Book Fairy Tales Book Russian Fairy Tales (Illustrated)

Download or read book A Cultural History of Fairy Tales in the Long Nineteenth Century written by Naomi J. Wood and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-07-15 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How have fairy tales from around the world changed over the centuries? What do they tell us about different cultures and societies? This volume explores the period when the European fairy tales conquered the world and shaped the global imagination in its own image. Examining how collectors, children's writers, poets, and artists seized the form to challenge convention and normative ideas, this book explores the fantastic imagination that belies the nineteenth century's materialist and pedestrian reputation. Looking at writers including E.T.A Hoffman, the Brothers Grim, S.T. Coleridge, Walter Scott, Oscar Wilde, Christina Rosetti, George MacDonald, and E. Nesbit, the volume shows how fairy tales touched every aspect of nineteenth century life and thought. It provides new insights into themes including: forms of the marvelous, adaptation, gender and sexuality, humans and non-humans, monsters and the monstrous, spaces, socialization, and power. With contributions from international scholars across disciplines, this volume is an essential resource for researchers, scholars and students of literature, history, and cultural studies. A Cultural History of Fairy Tales (6-volume set) A Cultural History of Fairy Tales in Antiquity is also available as a part of a 6-volume set, A Cultural History of Fairy Tales, tracing fairy tales from antiquity to the present day, available in print, or within a fully-searchable digital library accessible through institutions by annual subscription or on perpetual access (see www.bloomsburyculturalhistory.com).
