Book excerpt: The Mad Square: Modernity in German Art 1910-1937 focuses on the great aesthetic innovations that were made by artists throughout Germany in painting, sculpture, graphic art, photography, film and the decorative arts during the years from 1910 to 1937. The inter-related, fluctuating nature of modernist movements such as Expressionism, Dada, Constructivism, Bauhaus and New Objectivity are be emphasised as is the broader historical context in which the works were produced. The works chosen reflect the fascinating and complex ways in which artists responded to the forces of modernity and their passionate engagement with contemporary society, culture and politics.

Book The Mad Math Manual

Download or read book The Mad Math Manual written by Ahmad W. Chamoun and published by Ahmad W. Chamoun. This book was released on 2022-07-20 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After studying and teaching math and science over the years I realized that many good opportunities for learning and teaching important and essential things were missing from the resources that were available. Included in this book are many exercises, techniques and insights that strengthen a learner’s mathematical and logical abilities which are simply not to be found anywhere else. Also included are things which I have learned from different, disparate places that, for the student’s convenience, have all been gathered into one place and which I attempted to explain in simpler terms than what is currently available. Afterall, it is hard enough to learn these concepts let alone have to shift through all of the data to find what really pertains to one’s study. Some of the material presented are things which I myself found to be the most confusing. In this regard I hope that the manual can be a great resource for students trying to learn more about math and science as well as the workings of nature. Even though it is unlikely a reader will be able to understand all of the material presented on their own and without the presence of a teacher, having another resource in which the material and concepts are presented in a unique and simpler way is highly useful. Generally, when people learn about math and science, they are usually not satisfied by the answer that their teacher or textbook has to give on why nature settled on a certain constant or equation. It’s mind boggling to me how many people fail to acknowledge the relatedness of many physical constants as well as the logic behind some of the greatest discoveries, and in effect are missing out on a lot of the beauty behind science and the workings of nature.

Book The Mad Scientist teaches Chemistry

Download or read book The Mad Scientist teaches Chemistry written by Experiland and published by Experiland science books. This book was released on 2010-09-23 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemistry is the study of matter in the form of atoms, molecules, and the interactions that happen between them called chemical reactions. In its vast sense, chemistry is actually the science of all the available materials that make up the world around you. This includes all ‘matter’ that you can see, hear, smell, taste, and touch! Matter is everything that has mass and occupies space and all matter is composed out of the basic building blocks we call ‘atoms’. Understanding how to predict and explain how matter change when they react to form new substances, is what chemistry and chemists are all about! The 50 projects contained in this science experiment e-book cover a wide range of Chemistry topics; from Chemical reactions to Elements & Compounds… there are even experiments on chemical power and endothermic reactions all designed for young students from grade 1 to 8! With this book, you are sure to find a project that interests you. When you are interested in a certain science topic, you will have more fun, and learn more, too! With the help of this book, you will construct many weird, wonderful and wacky experiments that you can have hours of fun with! Amongst many others, you will use chromatography to predict the ‘fall’ colour of a green leaf tree, make your own stalactites to learn about evaporation, make glue, toothpaste and caramel to experiment with chemical reactions, and use various substances to test if a substance is an acid or base! Other fun experiments include: growing your own crystals on a piece of string, testing for the presence of iron in breakfast cereals, writing secret messages to your friends with your own invisible ink, using iodine to test for the presence of starch in foods, making a detector to predict the possibility of rain, making an exothermic reaction with vinegar & steel wool, using chemistry to make your dull coins shine, electro-plating a nail, making a ‘lava lamp’ with oil & water, making a fluid for copying newsprint to blank sheets of paper, making paper, snuffing out a candle by ‘pouring’ carbon dioxide gas over it, Testing how much Vitamin C is contained in various fruit juices and many, many more! When making these gadgets, you’ll discover that science is a part of every object in our daily lives, and who knows, maybe someday you will become a famous inventor too! Science can be real simple and is actually only about understanding the world you live in! Science certainly does not need to be complicated formulas, heavy text books and geeky guys in white lab coats with thick glasses. Science experiments are an awesome part of science that allows you to engage in cool and exciting hands on learning experiences that you are sure to enjoy and remember! By working through the science experiments in this book, you will learn about science in the best possible way – by doing things yourself. Designed with safety in mind, most of the items you will need for the experiments, such as jars, aluminium foil, scissors and sticky tape, you can find around your home. Others, such as magnets, lenses or a compass, you will be able to buy quite cheaply at a hobby shop or hardware store.

Book Strange Case of the Mad Professor

Download or read book Strange Case of the Mad Professor written by Peter Kobel and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013-07-02 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was one of the biggest scandals in New York University history. Professor John Buettner-Janusch, chair of the Anthropology Department, was convicted of manufacturing LSD and Quaaludes in his campus laboratory. He claimed the drugs were for an animal behavior experiment, but the jury found otherwise. B-J, as he was known, served two years in prison before being paroled, emerging to find his life and career in shambles. Four years later, he sought revenge by trying to kill the sentencing judge and others with poisoned Valentine’s Day chocolates. After pleading guilty to attempted murder, he was sentenced to twenty years in prison, where he died in mysterious circumstances. But before he was infamous at NYU, B-J, a scientific luminary, had also taught at Yale and Duke. One of the world’s foremost authorities on lemurs, our distant primate relatives on the remote island of Madagascar, he brought international attention to these endearing and endangered creatures. He cofounded the Duke Lemur Center in North Carolina and inspired a whole generation of scientists to study them and conservationists to save them and their habitat. His trials captured national headlines, but the mad scientist’s full story has never been told—until now.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physics is all around us. It is in the electric light you turn on at night; the bicycle you ride to school; your wristwatch, CD player, or that swing ball set you got for Christmas! Physics is the branch of science concerned with the nature and properties of matter, energy, space and time. If you can name it, chances are physics is involved. Everything in the universe has some effect on every other thing. Physicists study those effects. The 78 projects contained in this science experiment e-book cover a wide range of Physics topics; from Optics & Light to Air pressure & Acoustics… there are also experiments on forces & motion, thermodynamics and mechanics all designed for young students from grade 1 to 8! With this book, you are sure to find a project that interests you. When you are interested in a certain science topic, you will have more fun, and learn more, too! With the help of this book, you will construct many weird, wonderful and wacky experiments that you can have hours of fun with! Amongst many others, you will make use of the power of air pressure to lift objects, make a tin can that will comeback like a boomerang to learn about kinetic energy, use ice cubes to test if dark colours absorb more heat than light colours to experiment with thermodynamics, and make pulleys, levers and gears to study mechanics!
