Book excerpt: ***A New York Times Editors’ Choice*** A Scottish medieval adventure about the youngest in a war-band who must free her family from a castle prison after knights attack her home--with all the excitement of Ranger's Apprentice and perfect for fans of heroines like Alanna from The Song of the Lioness series. One dark night, Drest's sheltered life on a remote Scottish headland is shattered when invading knights capture her family, but leave Drest behind. Her father, the Mad Wolf of the North, and her beloved brothers are a fearsome war-band, but now Drest is the only one who can save them. So she starts off on a wild rescue attempt, taking a wounded invader along as a hostage. Hunted by a bandit with a dark link to her family's past, aided by a witch whom she rescues from the stake, Drest travels through unwelcoming villages, desolate forests, and haunted towns. Every time she faces a challenge, her five brothers speak to her in her mind about courage and her role in the war-band. But on her journey, Drest learns that the war-band is legendary for terrorizing the land. If she frees them, they'll not hesitate to hurt the gentle knight who's become her friend. Drest thought that all she wanted was her family back; now she has to wonder what their freedom would really mean. Is she her father's daughter or is it time to become her own legend?

Book excerpt: The same year Bob Knight was coming to power at Indiana, a lesser known -- but no less mercurial -- coach was setting up shop 2,000 miles to the west. Dick Harter left a nationally prominent college basketball team at the University of Pennsylvania for a rebuilding job at Oregon and the expressed intention of challenging the sport's reigning power, UCLA. What evolved was a program that recruited nationally and didn't apologize for an extremely physical style that featured players diving on the floor for loose balls, battering the opposition under the boards and on occasion, overstepping the standards of fair play. The so-called "Kamikaze Kids" quickly became revered around their Eugene home base and reviled through much of the rest of the Pac-8 Conference. At a time when the league ranked at or near the top in the country competitively, several coaches were outspoken critics of the Ducks' tactics, including the sainted John Wooden of UCLA. This is the story of that fervent era, from the sizzling love affair between the program and the local fans to the contentiousness that swirled around Oregon and its furious approach to playing basketball.

Book excerpt: About the Book A Knight's Journey! is a tale about a man's search for redemption as he struggles through both the horrid effects of panic disorder and PTSD. He is propelled through harsh, dangerous journeys to find courage, self-discovery, and love. Throughout the years, he has been haunted by a mysterious medieval knight who needs his help to find his own path to forgiveness. The engaging and inspirational story is told against the backdrop of the history of the Tower of London and results in a life-altering battle between the historical figures associated with it. About the Author Dean O'Quinn grew up on a farm/ranch in Montana and has always enjoyed the outdoors that this beautiful state has to offer. Because of a head injury sustained in college, he has suffered from panic disorder and PTSD for the last thirty years. In the past seven years, he also sustained injuries in four serious accidents. These injuries include a broken back, his sixth concussion, a skull fracture, his second TBI (traumatic brain injury), and a surgically replaced shoulder which is all metal now. These injuries landed him in a nursing home for a year. That is where he wrote this novel as a form of therapy to strengthen his replaced shoulder and to keep his mind sharp. He wants to help other people overcome similar issues with the same therapy program that he came up with for himself. He showed the progress in his own health through his writing, and this has become the culmination of his journey. His therapy creation is named "The Write Therapy," and this program is designed to help all people who are struggling these days. The first book that was published in this writing program is titled The Soldiers Who Ate Rattlesnakes and shows the beginning of this inspirational journey toward better health!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Williams knows exactly what to do with Quillifer, and it's hugely entertaining.” —Locus “Walter Jon Williams is always fun, but this may be his best yet, a delight from start to finish, witty, colorful, exciting and amusing by turns, exquisitely written.” —George R. R. Martin “Chock full of derring-do, blood and thunder, swashbuckling, and other good stuff evocative of Rafael Sabatini, Sir Walter Scott, and the penny-bloods.” —Paul Di Filippo, author of The Big Get-Even Quillifer—now a member of the nobility—finds himself further immersed in court politics as the outcast princess Floria is suddenly in a position of power with a rebellion stoked by a certain brilliant tactician, in this thrilling sequel to Quillifer. Rogue. Joker. Lover. Reluctant conspirator. The ambitious young Quillifer was been knighted for services to the crown, but was then banished from court by a queen who finds him obnoxious. Now, after a two-year voyage to improve his fortunes, Quillifer returns to court and is plunged immediately into a maelstrom of intrigue that triggers duels, plots, amours, and rollicking adventure. Bounding back and forth from the high councils of state to the warm bed of his mistress, Quillifer must exert every ounce of seductive charm and low cunning in order to survive. Queen Berlauda’s foreign husband brings war in his wake, along with a clutch of officials who enforce the royal will with violence, torture, and judicial murder. A dragon menaces the realm, and political conspiracy threatens the life of Quillifer’s young patroness, Princess Floria. It’s the traditional job of a knight to fight dragons and rescue princesses, but Quillifer is hardly a traditional knight, and he brings to the job an array of unorthodox skills that dazzles his swarm of rivals, seduces their wives, and threatens the realm. But there’s a greater menace to Quillifer than deadly political intrigue, for once again he finds himself hunted by the cruel, beautiful, and vengeful goddess Orlanda.
