Download or read book The MacDonald Collage Journal Vol 3 written by A. B. Walsh and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Macdonald Collage Journal, Vol. 3: October, 1942 Ever since this Journal was started by the College staff as a part of their contribution to the war effort and as a service to the farmers of Eastern Canada, we have invited comment and criticism of our articles and notes. We have received a fair amount of comment, mostly favourable. This is, of c0urse, gratifying to the editors, but it does not help us to improve the Journal or assist us in our ambition to make it brighter, more readable, more useful and more interesting to our readers. Two or three farmers, however, have said that they would like to get more notes from real farmers regarding gadgets they had invented or used to make their work easier, about methods they had found useful in making their farming more effective, concerning something their club had done to make farm life more attractive, or just newsy notes about the sayings or doings of real farm people. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Macdonald College Journal, Vol. 3: September 1942 The Journal received a cordial welcome at the fine farm of Walter Barr near Hemmingford last month during a two-hour afternoon visit. We found Mr. Barr and his son Beattie (whose picture appears On the cover of this issue) getting in the last few loads of hay and feeling pleased to have the loft well filled again. We strolled across the fields of grain in stook, towards the well-laden orchard, went carefully around the bee hives, up the hill to inspect the ten acres of corn - tall enough to get lost in, looked at the 21 pigs fattening for market and the row of fine calves in the barn - and were ready to take our hats off again to the farmer and his son who take care of all this and milk their 16 cows night and morning. But we said nothing because we knew they were typical of many other farmers and many other sons who in a time of shortage of labour and equipment are carrying on, with a minimum of complaint. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The book addresses chronologically the most striking reactions of the art world to the rise of military engagement in Vietnam then in Cambodia.” —Guillaume LeBot, Critique d’art The Vietnam War (1964–1975) divided American society like no other war of the twentieth century, and some of the most memorable American art and art-related activism of the last fifty years protested U.S. involvement. At a time when Pop Art, Minimalism, and Conceptual Art dominated the American art world, individual artists and art collectives played a significant role in antiwar protest and inspired subsequent generations of artists. This significant story of engagement, which has never been covered in a book-length survey before, is the subject of Kill for Peace. Writing for both general and academic audiences, Matthew Israel recounts the major moments in the Vietnam War and the antiwar movement and describes artists’ individual and collective responses to them. He discusses major artists such as Leon Golub, Edward Kienholz, Martha Rosler, Peter Saul, Nancy Spero, and Robert Morris; artists’ groups including the Art Workers’ Coalition (AWC) and the Artists Protest Committee (APC); and iconic works of collective protest art such as AWC’s Q. And Babies? A. And Babies and APC’s The Artists Tower of Protest. Israel also formulates a typology of antiwar engagement, identifying and naming artists’ approaches to protest. These approaches range from extra-aesthetic actions—advertisements, strikes, walk-outs, and petitions without a visual aspect—to advance memorials, which were war memorials purposefully created before the war’s end that criticized both the war and the form and content of traditional war memorials. “Accessible and informative.” —Art Libraries Society of North America

Book The Urban Design Reader

Download or read book The Urban Design Reader written by Michael Larice and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-07 with total page 1087 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of The Urban Design Reader draws together the very best of classic and contemporary writings to illuminate and expand the theory and practice of urban design. Nearly 50 generous selections include seminal contributions from Howard, Le Corbusier, Lynch, and Jacobs to more recent writings by Waldheim, Koolhaas, and Sorkin. Following the widespread success of the first edition of The Urban Design Reader, this updated edition continues to provide the most important historical material of the urban design field, but also introduces new topics and selections that address the myriad challenges facing designers today. The six part structure of the second edition guides the reader through the history, theory and practice of urban design. The reader is initially introduced to those classic writings that provide the historical precedents for city-making into the twentieth century. Part Two introduces the voices and ideas that were instrumental in establishing the foundations of the urban design field from the late 1950s up to the mid-1990s. These authors present a critical reading of the design professions and offer an alternative urban design agenda focused on vital and lively places. The authors in Part Three provide a range of urban design rationales and strategies for reinforcing local physical identity and the creation of memorable places. These selections are largely describing the outcomes of mid-century urban design and voicing concerns over the placeless quality of contemporary urbanism. The fourth part of the Reader explores key issues in urban design and development. Ideas about sprawl, density, community health, public space and everyday life are the primary focus here. Several new selections in this part of the book also highlight important international development trends in the Middle East and China. Part Five presents environmental challenges faced by the built environment professions today, including recent material on landscape urbanism, sustainability, and urban resiliency. The final part examines professional practice and current debates in the field: where urban designers work, what they do, their roles, their fields of knowledge and their educational development. The section concludes with several position pieces and debates on the future of urban design practice. This book provides an essential resource for students and practitioners of urban design, drawing together important but widely dispersed writings. Part and section introductions are provided to assist readers in understanding the context of the material, summary messages, impacts of the writing, and how they fit into the larger picture of the urban design field.
