Book Inspirational Thoughts to Warm the Soul

Download or read book Inspirational Thoughts to Warm the Soul written by Doris E. Curtis and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-12 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is chock full of religious quotations that are intended to inspire, convict, and challenge as well as to comfort, encourage, and console the reader. Whether you read these quotations casually or study them diligently, may they provoke insightful thought. As a bonus, the abbreviated life stories of selected authors have been included in the appendix. Doris Curtis, a retired English teacher and now in her 80's, first developed a keen interest in laconic quotations in the 1960's when she began posting them on the blackboard of her classroom. In the 1980's she began scribbling quotations down in her journals and daily planners. For many years her friends suggested that she compile her quotations in a book. However, it wasn't until April 2010, that she and her son Bryan (co-author) began the arduous task of compiling the quotations as well as identifying the source of each quotation. During the compilation exercise Bryan also found additional insightful quotations which have been included as well. This is Doris' first book. Bryan has also authored the book, "Combating Bible Illiteracy."

Book excerpt: There have been Lutheran schools in Australia for more than 170 years. This book examines the first 80 years of that history through a series of biographies of the patriarchs, those educational leaders who established the rich traditions which still influence the church and its approach to formal schooling in the twentieth century. The eight profiles in this book not only cover the broad sweep of Lutheran educational history from 1839 to 1919, but also explore the personalities of people who were leading players in its development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "American Lutheranism" in 2 volumes is the record of how the Christian truth, restored by Luther, was preached and accepted, opposed and defended, corrupted and restored in the United States of America at various times, by various men, and in various synods and congregations. The authors main object was to record the principal facts regarding the doctrinal position occupied at various times, either by the different American Lutheran bodies themselves or by some of their representative men. The first volume deals with the early history of Lutheranism in America, while the second presents the history of the synods which in 1918 merged into the United Lutheran Church: the General Synod, the General Council, and the United Synod in the South.

Book The Hospital on Seminary Ridge at the Battle of Gettysburg

Download or read book The Hospital on Seminary Ridge at the Battle of Gettysburg written by Michael A. Dreese and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2005-08-16 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Old Dorm," which served as the first classroom and dormitory of the Gettysburg Lutheran Theological Seminary, is a familiar tourist site--Union Cavalry General John Buford directed the opening stages of the battle of Gettysburg from the building's distinctive cupola and some of the bloodiest fighting of the three-day conflict took place on Seminary Ridge. However, few visitors realize the building's important role as the second largest hospital at Gettysburg, both during and after the battle. During the peak occupancy, 600-700 wounded soldiers from both armies were cared for at this site. This work presents the history of the Gettysburg Seminary during the Civil War and the important cast of characters that have passed through its halls by utilizing the firsthand accounts of soldiers, civilians, surgeons, and relief agency personnel. Also included is the prewar and postwar history of the Seminary, as well as information about President Samuel S. Schmucker and the abolition movement.
