Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will provide an introduction to the epidemiology, etiology and pathogenesis of the condition while also exploring the classification, diagnosis, and current and emerging therapies for systemic lupus erythematosus. Systemic lupus erythematosus is an autoimmune disease in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue. It can affect the skin, joints, kidneys, brain, and other organs. The underlying cause of the disease is not fully known, and SLE is much more common in women than in men. It may occur at any age but most often occurs in people between 10 and 50 years of age. This is the second Adis title from Ronald F van Vollenhoven, who previously authored Biologics for the Treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis.

  • Pages : 124 pages

Download or read book Lupus written by Daniel J Wallace and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-04-25 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of the Oxford American Rheumatology Library, this concise, authoritative pocketbook provides the most up-to-date information on the diagnosis, treatment and management of lupus. The volume describes the pathophysiology of the condition, diagnostic strategies and tools, and current and emerging therapeutic options, focusing on direct clinical applications for busy healthcare professionals. One million people in the United States suffer from systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE or lupus), a chronic autoimmune disease that is potentially debilitating and sometimes fatal as the immune system attacks the body's cells and tissue, resulting in inflammation and tissue damage. SLE can affect any part of the body, but most often damages the heart, joints, skin, lungs, blood vessels, liver, kidneys and nervous system. The course of the disease is unpredictable, with periods of illness alternating with remission. It can be treated symptomatically, mainly with corticosteroids and immunosuppressants, though there is currently no cure. Several promising new treatments, however, are in late-stage clinical trials. Lupus is one of several diseases known as the 'great imitator' because its symptoms vary so widely and it often mimics or is mistaken for other illnesses, and because the symptoms come and go unpredictably. As a result, patients present with varied symptoms to different practitioners and diagnosis can be elusive, with patients sometimes suffering unexplained symptoms and untreated lupus for years. Hence, a practical guide to the diagnosis and treatment of lupus would be valuable to an array of clinicians and may help expedite earlier diagnosis and better patient care. The target audience is rheumatologists in training and primary care physicians who care for lupus patients and allied health professionals who assist in their management. The book will fulfill a need for a concise, practical guide to Lupus for clinicians that distills the principal features of this complicated, often misunderstood disorder. Dr. Daniel J. Wallace is one of the world's leading authorities on the disorder, an eminent clinician who has treated over 2,000 lupus patients, the largest such practice in America. He is the author of another Oxford book--The Lupus Book, and the editor of the premier authoritative lupus textbook, Dubois' Lupus Erythematosus.

Book Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Download or read book Systemic Lupus Erythematosus written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patients that present with a connective tissue disease are often a challenge to diagnose and treat. A connective tissue disease is a disorder in which the tissues of the body consisting of the cells and the matrix which holds them together are disrupted. This guide will describe several multi system conditions that result from the inflammatory and immune-mediated disorder systemic lupus erythematosus and the related condition of Sjogren's syndrome. These diseases affect various tissues of the body; details of their management are discussed within, including presentation, investigation, differential diagnosis, and treatment. These diseases are multifactorial conditions associated with a complex genetic predisposition and various, not well understood, environmental triggers that induce inflammatory and immune-mediated responses directed against components of the person's own body. As a result these diseases fall under the umbrella term known as the systemic autoimmune diseases. Patients with a systemic autoimmune connective tissue disease can present with clinical symptoms and signs in one or more often, several, systems of the body. Some of these diseases affect people of certain ages and gender more often than others, including children, but this guide will focus on the management of adult patients. These diseases are more common than is generally realized, cannot be cured, are associated with considerable morbidity and still cause significant mortality. Appropriate investigations are critical to making the correct diagnosis so that treatment can be tailored to the patient's condition. It is important not only to recognize and treat the current disease activity, but also to prevent death and the development of chronic damage due to complications of the disease and the immuno-suppressive drugs used to treat it. Principles of drug treatment are discussed, but the final choice of drug and exact dosages to be used will depend on the details of the patient's condition and should be planned by a physician with relevant experience of these conditions and responsible for the management of the patient. Due to the variable severity of these diseases and their multisystem nature, patients with an autoimmune connective tissue disease may present to general practitioners, general physicians or internal medicine specialists, obstetricians, intensive care or any medical or surgical specialist. The majority of patients with these conditions are cared for long term by dermatologists, rheumatologists, and/or nephrologists, as it is the skin, joints and kidneys that are most often involved. However, it should be noted that many patients develop cardio-respiratory or infectious complications, including accelerated atherosclerosis, due to the disease and/or its treatment. Multidisciplinary care is important and should involve the full range of allied health professionals, as well as the relevant clinical specialists depending on the organs and systems involved.
