Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lumber Cut of the United States, 1906 No claim is made that the figures here presented are absolutely correct for the quantity and value of the lumber output of the various States in 1906, but they are close approximations. There are a large number of small and portable sawmills throughout the country which were not reached, but the influence of their combined output upon. The total is relatively slight, as shown by a comparison of the reports from New York in'1905 and in 1906. The Forest, Fish, and Game Commission obtained reports from mills in that State. In 1905, and from mills in 1906, an increase of 113 per cent in the number of reports; but the total quantity of lumber reported in 1906 was but 8 per cent greater than that in 1905. The cut of White pine was certainly no greater. The cut of Douglas fir increased remarkably, because the capacity of old mills Was increased and many new ones were added. The cut. Of fir in 1904 was also below normal, owing to unfavorable market conditions. There was probably a Small decrease in hemlock. There was probably a Slight decrease in the cut of Spruce. The Census Shows a decrease of 34 per cent in oak from 1899 to 1904, and this decrease is undoubtedly continuing. There was also some decrease in poplar, a continuation of the decrease of 18 per cent Shown in the Census returns between 1899 and 1904. There Was evidently an increase in cypress, maple, and the miscellaneous group, including a. Large number of species of. Minor importance, many of which are being Substituted for those which are obtained With. Increasing, difficulty. Table 2 gives the kind and quantity of lumber cut by the establishments from which the Forest Service received -reports. Yellow pine is far in the lead, with 8 feet, or 28. 8 __per. Cent of the total cut; and this lead would have been increased to at least 34 per cent if full. Reports had been secured.
