Book The Swan King

Download or read book The Swan King written by Christopher McIntosh and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Swan King" is the biography of one of the most enigmatic figures of the 19th century, described by Verlaine as 'the only true king of his century'. A man of wildly eccentric temperament and touched by a rare, imaginative genius, Ludwig II of Bavaria is remembered both for his patronage of Richard Wagner and for the fabulous palaces which he created as part of a dream-world to escape the responsibilities of state. In realization of his fantasies, he created a ferment of creativity among artists and craftsmen, while his neglect of Bavaria's political interests made powerful enemies among those critical of his self-indulgence and excesses. At the age of 40, declared insane in a plot to depose him, Ludwig died in mysterious circumstances.

Excerpt: ...warriors, and the citizens of the metropolis and their dames, made merry until far into the night and the following day. The cheers for the King, for the Crown Prince of Prussia, for all who had fought and conquered, were ceaseless. The military bands which had so long been absent were once more heard in the great Feldherren Halle. Patriotic songs were played on the stands in the Odeon Platz. The houses were illuminated. All were delighted at the success of the reception, and at the friendship between the King and the Crown Prince, which was looked upon as a good omen for the new alliance. The day afterwards the royal family, with their guest, made an excursion to the Roseninsel, where the roses were in full bloom. Ludwig, wishing to do honour to Friedrich and give him pleasure, asked his permission, as they were walking together in the afternoon, to make him colonel of one of his regiments of light horse. The Crown Prince answered loftily that it depended on the Emperor whether he could accept the offer or not, adding, with a smile: "I do not know if the slim Uhlan uniform would suit my stout figure!" The King was greatly displeased with this remark, and later repeated it to several persons. After the return from the Roseninsel he informed his secretary that he would under no circumstances be present at the military banquet in the Glas Palast the following day. This banquet, to which nine hundred invitations had been issued, and which was to mark the height of the festivities, was given in honour of Friedrich, but was intended at the same time to be a recognition shown to the Bavarian army. The secretary wrote a letter to his Majesty, in which, with the deepest respect, he endeavoured to persuade him at least tos how himself...

Download or read book Ludwig the Second King of Bavaria Classic Reprint written by Clara Tschudi and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ludwig the Second, King of Bavaria Both the Crown Prince and his brother were unusually good-looking, and it was a brilliant sight when the popular and beautiful Queen walked about the streets of Munich, with her handsome boys beside her. Maternal joy and pride shone from her eyes, and the glance of the people was directed with genuine admiration on her and her children. Otto was the one who most resembled his mother. Being, moreover, lighthearted and accessible, he was also the one to whom the prize of beauty was awarded by popular Opinion. Ludwig's beauty was of a more uncommon and intellectual type, a note worthy feature of his face being the large, brilliant, and dark-blue eye. The boys were always dressed each in his particular colour, which the Queen herself had chosen. Otto in red, and Ludwig in blue - the national colours of Bavaria. Not only were Ludwig's clothes blue in tint, but also, as far as was possible, his various other small possessions and necessities; such, for instance, as the binding of his books, his draw ing portfolios, and his volumes of music This hue always continued to be his favourite colour. Book A Royal Recluse

Download or read book A Royal Recluse written by Werner Bertram and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Royal Recluse: Memories of Ludwig II. Of Bavaria Within Castle Nymphenburg, the Crown Princess Marie of Bavaria had waited twelve long hours for the birth of the future King. The new - born babe, upon whom a great and illustrious future smiles, is named Ludwig, after his grandfather. Bavaria, which through Napoleon I. Had become a king dom and which also through the medium of Napoleon, as well as later by the provisions of the Congress of Vienna in 18 15 was considerably increased in size, now took its place at the head of the smaller German States. Ludwig I., who erected the wonderful Walhalla near Regensburg, had, by consistently patronising the Arts during his reign, transformed Munich, formerly nicknamed the Beer Town into a cultural centre. The events of 1 848, ending in the forced abdication of the first Bavarian king, placed his son Maximilian on the throne. He, although a follower of the then fashionable liberalism and surrounding himself with free-thinking counsellors, withstood the foundation of a German Em pire under Prussian leadership and refused to acknowledge the Imperial Constitution.
