Book The Margery Sharp Collection Volume Two

Download or read book The Margery Sharp Collection Volume Two written by Margery Sharp and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This New York Times–bestselling trilogy follows an artistic girl as she grows up to become a painter—from the “highly gifted” author of Cluny Brown (The New Yorker). A master of the twentieth-century comedy of manners, British author Margery Sharp has been praised as “one of the most gifted writers of comedy” (Chicago Daily News) and “a wonderful entertainer” (The New Yorker). In her New York Times bestseller, The Eye of Love, she introduced nine-year-old artist Martha, a character so fascinating Sharp continued her story into adulthood in two beautifully wrought follow-up novels. “[Martha] offers a completely unique portrait of female genius, in all its single-minded dedication and selfishness” (The New York Times). The Eye of Love: They met at the Chelsea Arts Ball: He came as a brown paper parcel, she as a Spanish dancer. Dolores and Harry have been passionately in love ever since. But ten years later, during the Great Depression, Harry must marry his colleague’s daughter to rescue his nearly bankrupt business. Yet with help from Dolores’s artistically inclined, orphaned nine-year-old niece, Martha, the couple may still find their way to happily ever after, in this New York Times bestseller. “This postwar novel is one of her best.” —The New York Times “A double-plotted . . . masterpiece with a great deal of wit and not an ounce of sentimentality.” —The Guardian Martha in Paris: Now eighteen, Martha is blessed with the opportunity of a lifetime: an all-expenses-paid trip to Paris to study painting. Despite her single-minded pursuit of creativity, she attracts an admirer in the City of Light—not a debonair Frenchman, but a homesick British bank clerk. When an unexpected complication arises, Martha deals with the consequences in her usual sensible, independent fashion. “Chalk up another for Margery Sharp’s collection of offbeat heroines and outrageously funny novels.” —Newark Evening News Martha, Eric, and George: In the decade since her time in Paris, Martha has become a successful artist in England. Now, as she returns to Paris to attend an exhibition of her work, she must face some unfinished business—namely her ten-year-old son, George, who’s been raised by his father, Eric, and doting grandmother. In this precocious Parisian boy, she is finally about to meet her match. “Amusing, enjoyable, Miss Sharp is a born storyteller.” —The Times (London)

Book The Albert Einstein Collection Volume Two

Download or read book The Albert Einstein Collection Volume Two written by Albert Einstein and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2019-04-30 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From revealing, personal letters to brilliant essays on the nature of science, these three volumes demonstrate the breadth of Einstein’s thought. The man who became famous for conceiving of the equation E=mc2 kept his mind sharp through stimulating correspondence and applied his intellectual acuity to a number of important scientific issues. The second volume of the Albert Einstein Collection offers a fascinating window into how he developed his ideas. Essays in Science: In these sixteen essays, written at the height of his intellectual powers, Einstein sets out his views on scientific knowledge, its relationship to human experience, and the underlying principles of any scientific pursuit. He discusses his own work in theoretical physics and its basis in field theory, as well as the many achievements of other scientific thinkers—including Johannes Kepler, Isaac Newton, James Clerk Maxwell, Max Planck, Niels Bohr, and others. Letters to Solovine: This collection of personal letters from Einstein to his longtime friend and translator Maurice Solovine offers a rare glimpse into the evolution of his thought, as well as a revealing portrait of the man himself. Spanning Einstein’s career and ranging from philosophical discussion to personal gossip, these letters are presented in English translation alongside the German text, with facsimiles of the original letters also included. Letters on Wave Mechanics: In this stirring collection of correspondence, four of the twentieth century’s greatest minds—H. A. Lorentz, Max Planck, Erwin Schrödinger, and Albert Einstein—discuss, debate, and refine Schrödinger’s then-nascent theory of wave mechanics. As the physicist Karl Przibram states in his foreword to this edition, “little needs to be added to the letters; they speak for themselves. Apart from their essential content, they reveal something of the personalities of the four men of genius.”

Book The Margery Sharp Collection Volume One

Download or read book The Margery Sharp Collection Volume One written by Margery Sharp and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four charming, witty novels—including The Nutmeg Tree—from the “highly gifted” New York Times–bestselling author of Cluny Brown (The New Yorker). A master of the twentieth-century comedy of manners, British author Margery Sharp has been praised as “one of the most gifted writers of comedy” (Chicago Daily News) and “a wonderful entertainer” (The New Yorker). Available for the first time in a single volume, this quartet of novels provides a shining example of “her brilliantly acerbic fiction . . . [and] one of her greatest talents, creating female characters of toughness and complexity” (The New York Times). Something Light: In 1950s London, professional dog photographer Louisa Datchett has decided it’s high time she snared herself a husband. Up until now, she’s been indiscriminately fond of men, who’ve taken shocking advantage of her good nature. At age thirty Louisa is ready for someone to take care of her and sets out on her romantic quest, in this New York Times bestseller. “Brisk, bright, sly, engaging . . . a pleasure to read.” —Chicago Tribune The Nutmeg Tree: Motherhood was never really free-spirited Julia Packett’s thing. Following the loss of her husband in World War I, Julia turned to her well-heeled in-laws to raise her daughter. Now twenty, Susan invites her mother to France for the summer to persuade her grandmother to allow her to marry. When Julia arrives, she quickly sees that her proper daughter is mismatched with a playboy. And when Susan’s distinguished legal guardian, Sir William Waring, shows up, romantic complications ensue. “Original, subtle, and consistently entertaining.” —Kirkus Reviews The Flowering Thorn: In 1929 London, socialite Lesley Frewen impulsively decides to adopt an orphaned boy. Moving to the tiny village of High Westover, Lesley finds herself challenged by a whole new way of life and changed by a young boy who begins to awaken her capacity to love. “To those who ‘discovered’ Margery Sharp with The Nutmeg Tree, the reissue of this earlier novel . . . will be good news. The city-bred-country-won theme is handled with gay humor and enough of sentiment for general appeal.” —Kirkus Reviews The Innocents: As World War II separates a three-year-old, mentally challenged girl from her parents, a British spinster takes on the responsibility of raising her and the two grow closer. But when the war is over and the girl’s mother returns, Antoinette doesn’t want to be separated from the only person who’s ever really understood her. “Marvelously crafted . . . believable and heart-wrenching . . . [Sharp] is an incredibly perceptive writer.” —The Literary Sisters

Book Revival and Awakenings Volume Two

Download or read book Revival and Awakenings Volume Two written by Riaan Engelbrecht and published by Riaan Engelbrecht. This book was released on 2024-07-10 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volumes one and two of Revival and Awakenings (part of the End-Time Series) explore what is a real revival and a spiritual awakening. Prophetically, it delves into what God has been saying for a long time, which is that the Lord will sweep the earth with revival in the end times which will ignite many followers with His holy fire. What will this revival look like? This is the big question, and one would rather say it will not be a singular event, but a sequence of Godly movements across the globe that will be infectious, contagious and real. In an awakening, the Holy Spirit gives unbelieving people - who are dead in their trespasses and sins -a new awareness of their needs. A revival is connected to the people of God and it is when those who are in churches - those who are professing believers - are ministered to by the Holy Spirit in such a way that they are renewed in their devotion to the Lord. The time is ripe for the one final great harvest, yet this calls for the revived church, full of the fire of the Holy Spirit, to go into the fields, to awaken the lost and the forgotten and broken, and to bring them into the loving embrace of a God who is full of compassion, grace and mercy. This is the time of spiritual latter rains, and now is the time to welcome the embrace of a God who is real, alive, and who calls us all into His arms to reflect His beauty and greatness. It is not God’s Will that any soul should perish, but that all men should come to the knowledge of God and be saved. God is calling on all believers to cast their net in the deep for the harvest of souls.

Book God s Wounds Hermeneutic of the Christian Symbol of Divine Suffering Volume Two

Download or read book God s Wounds Hermeneutic of the Christian Symbol of Divine Suffering Volume Two written by Jeff B. Pool and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book constitutes the second volume of a three-volume study of Christian testimonies to divine suffering: God's Wounds: Hermeneutic of the Christian Symbol of Divine Suffering, vol. 2, Evil and Divine Suffering. The larger study focuses its inquiry into the testimonies to divine suffering themselves, seeking to allow the voices that attest to divine suffering to speak freely, then to discover and elucidate the internal logic or rationality of this family of testimonies, rather than defending these attestations against the dominant claims of classical Christian theism that have historically sought to eliminate such language altogether from Christian discourse about the nature and life of God. This second volume of studies proceeds on the basis of the presuppositions of this symbol, those implicit attestations that provide the conditions of possibility for divine suffering-that which constitutes divine vulnerability with respect to creation-as identified and examined in the first volume of this project: an understanding of God through the primary metaphor of love (God is love); and an understanding of the human as created in the image of God, with a life (though finite) analogous to the divine life-the imago Dei as love. The second volume then investigates the first two divine wounds or modes of divine suffering to which the larger family of testimonies to divine suffering normally attest: (1) divine grief, suffering because of betrayal by the beloved human or human sin; and (2) divine self-sacrifice, suffering for the beloved human in its bondage to sin or misery, to establish the possibility of redemption and reconciliation. Each divine wound, thus, constitutes a response to a creaturely occasion. The suffering in each divine wound also occurs in two stages: a passive stage and an active stage. In divine grief, God suffers because of human sin, betrayal of the divine lover by the beloved human: divine sorrow as the passive stage of divine grief; and divine anguish as the active stage of divine grief. In divine self-sacrifice, God suffers in response to the misery or bondage of the beloved human's infidelity: divine travail (focused on the divine incarnation in Jesus of Nazareth) as the active stage of divine self-sacrifice; and divine agony (focused on divine suffering in the crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth) as the passive stage of divine self-sacrifice.
