Book Preliminary Critical Experiments on a Mock up of the Los Alamos Molten Plutonium Reactor

Download or read book Preliminary Critical Experiments on a Mock up of the Los Alamos Molten Plutonium Reactor written by and published by . This book was released on 1958 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of measurements of critical masses has been made for fast-spectrum plutonium assemblies similar to proposed designs for the Los Alamos Molten Plutonium Reactor Experiment (LAMPRE I). The effectivesness of various systems of reactivity control has been determined. Fission rate distributions and spatial flux variations were obtained for comparison with values computed according to the Sn method.

Book EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE AND REACTIVITY CHANGES IN OPERATION OF THE LOS ALAMOS PLUTONIUM REACTOR

Download or read book EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE AND REACTIVITY CHANGES IN OPERATION OF THE LOS ALAMOS PLUTONIUM REACTOR written by and published by . This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The operation of the Fast Reactor is considered in terms of normal equilibrium conditions and normal shut-down. The proposed loading, control rod adjustment and subsequent "floating" operation are discussed. Safety devices and interlocks are described. Temperature and reactivity changes are examined with respect to various system failures, phase changes, and "flashing" of the reactor. Slow changes due to faulty slug cooling are also considered. The calculations were initially based upon 10 kw operation. Performance tests of the mercury system now indicate that 20-kw operation may be feasible. (D.E.B.).

Book Los Alamos Molten Plutonium Reactor Experiment Lampre Hazard Report

Download or read book Los Alamos Molten Plutonium Reactor Experiment Lampre Hazard Report written by and published by . This book was released on 1959 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report supersedes K-1-3425 and LA-2327(Prelim). The first experiment (LAMPRE I) in a program to develop molten plutonium fuels for fast reactors is described and the hazards associated with reactor operation are discussed and evaluated. The reactor desc=iption includes fuel element design, core configuration, sodium coolant system control, safety systems, fuel capsule charger, cover gas system, and shielding. Information of the site comprises population in surrounding areas, meteorological data, geology, and details of the reactor building. The hazmalfunction of the several elements comprising the reactor system. A calculation on the effect of fuel element bowiing appears in an appendix. (auth).

Book Examination of Jacketed Uranium Slugs from the Los Alamos Fast Reactor Clementine

Download or read book Examination of Jacketed Uranium Slugs from the Los Alamos Fast Reactor Clementine written by S. H. Paine and published by . This book was released on 1959 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examination of clad uranium reflector slugs which failed by rupture and swelling during the first year of operation of Clementine revealed no anisotropic damage to the uranium because of burnup or thermal cycling. The cladding was found to be of high-sulfur-free-machining steel, and it is postulated that thermal stresses caused welding flaws to open enough to permit seepage and corrosive attack upon the uranium cores by the reactor coolant (mercury).

Book Plutonium as a Fuel for the Los Alamos Molten Plutonium Reactor Experiment

Download or read book Plutonium as a Fuel for the Los Alamos Molten Plutonium Reactor Experiment written by and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Descriptions of LAMPRE I and its operation are presented. It is pointed out that the reactor was designed to provide a testing function and should not be regarded as a prototype design. The description serves as a method of reporting the status of the project. While problems of handling molten Pu are not solved, promising progress toward solution of these is reported. (J.R.D.).

Book The Los Alamos Primer

Download or read book The Los Alamos Primer written by Robert Serber and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than seventy years ago, American forces exploded the first atomic bombs over the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, causing great physical and human destruction. The young scientists at Los Alamos who developed the bombs, which were nicknamed Little Boy and Fat Man, were introduced to the basic principles and goals of the project in March 1943, at a crash course in new weapons technology. The lecturer was physicist Robert Serber, J. Robert Oppenheimer's protégé, and the scientists learned that their job was to design and build the world's first atomic bombs. Notes on Serber's lectures were gathered into a mimeographed document titled TheLos Alamos Primer, which was supplied to all incoming scientific staff. The Primer remained classified for decades after the war. Published for the first time in 1992, the Primer offers contemporary readers a better understanding of the origins of nuclear weapons. Serber's preface vividly conveys the mingled excitement, uncertainty, and intensity felt by the Manhattan Project scientists. This edition includes an updated introduction by Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Richard Rhodes. A seminal publication on a turning point in human history, The Los Alamos Primer reveals just how much was known and how terrifyingly much was unknown midway through the Manhattan Project. No other seminar anywhere has had greater historical consequences.
