First, let us observe the importance of having such a form at all as the Lord's Prayer left to us by the Founder of our faith. It was said once by a Scottish statesman, Give to any one you like the making of a nation's laws - give me the making of their ballads and songs, and that will tell us the mind of the nation. So it might be said, Give to any one you like the making of a Church's creed - or a Church's decrees or rubrics give me the making of its prayers, and that will tell us the mind of the Church or religious community. We have in this Prayer the one public universal prayer of Christendom. It contains the purest wishes, the highest hopes, the tenderest aspirations which our Master put into the mouth of His followers. It is the rule of our worship, the guide of our. Download or read book Ten Commandments written by Arthur W. Pink and published by Sovereign Grace Publishers,. This book was released on 2007 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today is a day of lawlessness. The spirit of our times is one of unbounded "freedom," one of casting off all restraints, despising all authority. Since God Himself is no longer feared by the majority, many no longer respect the God-ordained authority of governments, parents, church leaders, and educators. Because of abounding iniquity on every hand, the love of many professing Christians for their God and His Law has grown cold, just as Christ prophesied (Matthew 24:12) . Yet we see in Holy Scripture that the only true freedom is freedom from sin. Concerning the purpose of Christ's coming into the world, God's angel Gabriel said to Joseph, "And thou shalt call His name JESUS (that is, `JEHOVAH is Savior'): for He shall save His people from their sins" (Matthew 1:21) . The Lord Jesus said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:32) . Free from what? Free from sin! Jesus Christ Himself is the Truth, and to know Him is to be free both from the power of reigning sin and from sin's soul-destroying consequences, not simply in the world to come but in this present life as well. The Lord Jesus Himself was well acquainted with the supreme joy of the Godward life of obedience to God's Law and freedom from sin. During His earthly walk, He was a Lawkeeper par excellence. To think, that the Second Person of the holy Trinity, Jehovah the eternal Word, the Lawgiver of Israel, was "made of a woman, made under the Law" (Galatians 4:4) for our redemption! Think on this: the salvation that has been freely given to you, simply by your having trusted in Christ's blood and righteousness, was procured by Him, your substitute, at the highest possible cost. The salvation that is ''all of grace'' to you was earned, ''all of works, '' by your Savior! And yet He obeyed every commandment with the purest delight, saying, ''My meat (food) is to do the will of Him that sent Me, and to finish His work'' (John 4:34). Christ could say in the words of Job (23:12), yet with far greater truthfulness, ''Neither have I gone back from the commandment of His lips; I have esteemed the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.'' Mr. Pink's exposition of God's Moral Law is not exhaustive, for that is impossible. The Psalmist says, ''I have seen the end of all perfection: but Thy commandment is exceeding broad'' (Psalm 119:96). Nevertheless, Mr. Pink gets o the root of man's need. He ably demonstrates the way in which God's Spirit uses the Law: (1) in bringing men to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ (by bringing them to the end of themselves); and (2) in producing in them an increasing ''family resemblance, '' a holy likeness to their Father in heaven (which is the fruit of true saving faith). If you will read this book prayerfully, then God will graciously enable you to cry out with the Psalmist, ''O how love I Thy law! It is my meditation all the day'' (Psalm 119:97). Pink (1890-1953) was a Baptist Preacher in England, Australia, and the United States. He is most famous for his book The Sovereignty of God. After its advent, he, assisted by his editor Mr. I. Herendeen, launched his yearly publication, Studies in the Scriptures in 1921. These continued until his death, totaling altogether 33 volumes of 288 pp. each. Most of Pink=s books are taken from these yearly volumes (written monthly in 24 page format).

Book The Ten Commandments and the Lord s Prayer

Download or read book The Ten Commandments and the Lord s Prayer written by Ferdinand Schureman Schenck and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ten Commandments and the Lord's Prayer: A Sociological Study The Lord's Prayer voices forth the response of human nature as moved by the Divine Savior; it recognizes its deep need and lofty possibilities. The Law and the Prayer together describe the individual man in God's sight, the grandeur and loneliness of personality. But they are not content with God and the individual man; there must be other men. And thus they provide for the ideal Society, when all men shall regard God as their Father and their fellow men as brothers. I send forth this book with the great design of helping men to see the glory of God and our own nobility, as set forth in this Law and Prayer of our being. Book Learning to Read Learning Religion

Download or read book Learning to Read Learning Religion written by Britta Juska-Bacher and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2023-01-06 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catechism primers are inconspicuous but telling little books for children combining the teaching of reading skills and religious catechesis. From the 16th to the 19th centuries, they have been produced, disseminated and used in huge numbers in many regions of the world, in particular in Europe. Remarkably, similar texts appeared across the continent, spanning confessional traditions that were in other respects highly divergent. In different places, and across the whole period, different denominations used not only similar pedagogical and religious strategies, but also shared the same formats and iconography. This volume, edited by scholars from Finland, Germany, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, is the result of a collaborative transnational and interdisciplinary effort including education, language teaching, children’s literature, book history, and religious studies. With contributions on seventeen European countries and regions, it sheds new light on a fascinating but largely neglected part of European cultural heritage, and, by establishing a comprehensive and authoritative summary of the field, offers fresh impetus for further transnational research.

Book The English Grammar Schools to 1660

Download or read book The English Grammar Schools to 1660 written by Foster Watson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1908, this important work on the history of education traces the development of teaching in English Grammar Schools from the invention of printing up to 1660. It is not a history of the theories of educational reformers as to what should or should not be taught, but a history of the actual practices of the schools, of their curricula and of the differentiated subjects of instruction. The author relies heavily on the textbooks used in schools in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, in particular the ‘Ludus Literarius’ of John Brinsley and the ‘New Discovery of the Old Art of Teaching School’ of Charles Hoole, and makes free use of the School Statutes which state the express intention of the Founder as to what was to be taught. The period covered is one of great significance in which the Encyclopaedia of the medieval curriculum was abandoned for the modern practice of the differentiation of school subjects. The new knowledge of the Renaissance and the introduction of critical methods and of close analysis gave students a detailed knowledge which could not be fitted into the rigid confines of the medieval Encyclopaedia, while the invention of printing enormously facilitated the increase and spreading of text books for both teachers and pupils.
