Book excerpt: Excerpt from The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science, Vol. 20: Fifth Series; July-December 1885 In both J oule's and Weber's experiments a possible source of error seems to have been ignored. The wire was assumed to be at the temperature of the water in which it was immersed, and its resistance was calculated on this assumption. It is evident, however, that the wire was hotter than the water, inasmuch as it was giving heat to the water. The error due to this cause is of uncertain amount. If corrected for this error, the values of the equivalent would be increased and their excess over the water-friction values would become greater than before. To avoid this source of error, the research described below was planned. The suggestion and general plan of the research I owe to Professor Rowland. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science, Vol. 2: July-December, 1876 Now whatever theory we may hold concerning the consti tution of matter, it can scarcely be denied that our ordinary formulae do tell us the weights of those kinds of matter which take part in a given chemical reaction, or of those which result from that reaction. To the principle of the conserva tion of matter the writer already quoted appears to object. He would seemingly refuse his assent unless some one could experimentally prove to him that a given chemical compound has the same composition now that it had a hundred years ago. Hence, according as the vibrations (k) may be parallel or perpendicular to this second plane of incidence, they must be respectively perpendicular or parallel to the first or plane of polarization. The question thus reduces itself to whether, in polarized light in general, the vibrations are parallel or perpendicular to the plane of polarization. I have formed, namely, from the Greek word mom), change, the word entropy, which expresses the meaning of the magnitude S, in the same way as the word energy denotes that of the magnitude U.
