Book excerpt: Though the efficient movement of men, supplies, and equipment was a fundamental component of the civil war, Earl J. Hess’s Civil War Logistics is the first comprehensive study of the logistical systems that allowed the Union and Confederate armies to wage war. According to Hess, the Federal logistical effort was far more successful than the Confederate attempt to move and supply southern armies. This was due mainly to limited resources in the South but also to the North’s administrative management and a willingness to seize transportation resources when it needed them. Hess concludes that the logistical superiority of the northern forces laid a vital foundation for Union victory in the Civil War.

Book United States Army Logistics

Download or read book United States Army Logistics written by Steve R. Waddell and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2009-12-22 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You can train men to fight. You can plan for the invasion. But you can't have success on the battlefield if you cannot move the men and material into position. Success is not possible without logistical support and capabilities. The U.S. Army's logistics system began with practically nothing and through numerous conflicts and periods of peace has developed into a first rate supply system capable of supporting the global military commitments of the present day. This work presents the history of U.S. Army logistics as one of evolution, trial and error, and occasionally revolutionary change over a period of two hundred plus years. It is important that logisticians and combat leaders alike understand how the United States Army logistical system developed; the challenges that had to be overcome; and the successes and failures encountered along the way. Creating the U.S. Army in 1775 proved to be easy compared to the task of keeping the army adequately supplied over the short and long term. The availability of resources, industrial capacity, size of the army, geographic scope of operations, organization of the logistics system, competent leadership, congressional support, funding, and new technology have, and continue to impact the logistical system on a daily basis. Each new period of peace or war has brought new challenges and requirements. This work is broken into two key parts. First, to inform the reader on the basic history of U.S. Army Logistics. Second, to identify the key factors that influenced the development of the logistical system.

Book The Deadly Life of Logistics

Download or read book The Deadly Life of Logistics written by Deborah Cowen and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2014-09-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world in which global trade is at risk, where warehouses and airports, shipping lanes and seaports try to guard against the likes of Al Qaeda and Somali pirates, and natural disaster can disrupt the flow of goods, even our “stuff” has a political life. The high stakes of logistics are not surprising, Deborah Cowen reveals, if we understand its genesis in war. In The Deadly Life of Logistics, Cowen traces the art and science of logistics over the last sixty years, from the battlefield to the boardroom and back again. Focusing on choke points such as national borders, zones of piracy, blockades, and cities, she tracks contemporary efforts to keep goods circulating and brings to light the collective violence these efforts produce. She investigates how the old military art of logistics played a critical role in the making of the global economic order—not simply the globalization of production, but the invention of the supply chain and the reorganization of national economies into transnational systems. While reshaping the world of production and distribution, logistics is also actively reconfiguring global maps of security and citizenship, a phenomenon Cowen charts through the rise of supply chain security, with its challenge to long-standing notions of state sovereignty and border management. Though the object of corporate and governmental logistical efforts is commodity supply, The Deadly Life of Logistics demonstrates that they are deeply political—and, considered in the context of the long history of logistics, deeply indebted to the practice of war.

Book Military Logistics and Strategic Performance

Download or read book Military Logistics and Strategic Performance written by Thomas M. Kane and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work argues that logistics in warfare is crucial to achieving strategic success. The author identifies logistical capabilities as an arbiter of opportunity, which plays a critical role in determining which side will hold the strategic iniative in war. Armies which have secured reliable resources of supply have a great advantage in determining the time and manner in which engagements take place. Often, they can fight in ways their opponents cannot. The author illustrates this point with case studies of British logistics during the Burma campaign in the World War II, American logistical innovations during the Pacific War, Communist supply methods during the American phase of the Vietnam War and the competing logistical systems of both NATO and Warsaw Pact conventional forces during the Cold War.
