Download or read book Unconscious Logic written by Eric Rayner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the theories of Matte Blanco about the structure of the unconscious and the way in which it operates are generally recognised to be the most original since those of Freud, for many people the ways in which his ideas are expressed, including the use of terminology from mathematics and logic, make them difficult of access. Eric Rayner has written the first clear introduction to Matte Blanco's key concepts for psychotherapists and psychoanalysts and all those concerned with moving psychoanalytic thinking forward. He sets out the central ideas in a way which is easy to understand and then shows, with examples, how they relate to clinical practice. He also describes how the ideas are related to those of people in other disciplines - mathematics, logic, psychology (specifically Piaget), and anthropology, among others. Drawing on the work of a group of people who have been inspired by Matte Blanco's thinking to extend their own ideas and test them out in the consulting room, this book reveals the significance of Matte Blanco's thought for future research.

Book Open Minded

  • Author : Jonathan Lear
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press

  • ISBN : 0674274423
  • Pages : 356 pages

Download or read book Open Minded written by Jonathan Lear and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1999-09-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freud is discredited, so we don’t have to think about the darker strains of unconscious motivation anymore. We know what moves our political leaders, so we don’t have to look too closely at their thinking either. In fact, everywhere we look in contemporary culture, knowingness has taken the place of thought. This book is a spirited assault on that deadening trend, especially as it affects our deepest attempts to understand the human psyche—in philosophy and psychoanalysis. It explodes the widespread notion that we already know the problems and proper methods in these fields and so no longer need to ask crucial questions about the structure of human subjectivity.“What is psychology?” Open Minded is not so much an answer to this question as an attempt to understand what is being asked. The inquiry leads Jonathan Lear, a philosopher and psychoanalyst, back to Plato and Aristotle, to Freud and psychoanalysis, and to Wittgenstein. Lear argues that Freud and, more generally, psychoanalysis are the worthy inheritors of the Greek attempt to put our mindedness on display. There are also, he contends, deep affinities running through the works of Freud and Wittgenstein, despite their obvious differences. Both are concerned with how fantasy shapes our self-understanding; both reveal how life’s activities show more than we are able to say.The philosophical tradition has portrayed the mind as more rational than it is, even when trying to account for irrationality. Psychoanalysis shows us the mind as inherently restless, tending to disrupt its own functioning. And empirical psychology, for its part, ignores those aspects of human subjectivity that elude objective description. By triangulating between the Greeks, Freud, and Wittgenstein, Lear helps us recover a sense of what it is to be open-minded in our inquiries into the human soul.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Subconscious Remain there longer, our vision becomes clouded, impressions become vague, the memory uncertain; we seem absorbed in close contemplation, and yet but dimly realize what it is we contemplate; we dream and hardly know upon awakening what was really seen and what imagined. At times strange tales are told Of those depths, of curious forms Of life, part Of this world and part sugges tive Of some unreal world beyond. Monsters and sprites and elves are there, who on rare occasions, it is said, disport themselves upon the tops Of the waves, much to the consternation Of those who bring the tale. Ghosts Of our former, or Of our other selves are said to lurk in this night-side of mind, at times reasserting their portion in the con scious life that alone we call our own. As we turn to Observe them, to stare at, them with the waking eye, the cock crows, the dawn of consciousness looms above the horizon we are again awake and the ghosts have vanished. Book A Theory of Mind Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Theory of Mind Classic Reprint written by John Lewis March and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Theory of Mind The nature of the mind has itself been the cause of this delay in the formation of an acceptable theory for it. There is but one method of direct observation of mental phenomena, viz., introspection. But this method turns out to be almost entirely fruitless. The mind is conscious of its own thoughts and of a considerable number of feelings, but of its workings - of its essence - ir is quite unconscious. We fall into a void as soon as we attempt to observe exactly what is and what goes on in it. There is Simply nothing to observe. Book Man s Unconscious Passion Classic Reprint

Download or read book Man s Unconscious Passion Classic Reprint written by Wilfrid Lay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Man's Unconscious Passion But, to carry out this metaphor, the mind is neither spherical, nor is it of homogeneous den sity throughout. Possibly the iceberg is the best illustration of the extent Of the conscious and unconscious mind, because it is irregular in shape, may be melted Off at the bottom by warm currents, and lean over or turn turtle according to circumstances. The work of psychoanalysis is to make the thing spherical, so to speak, in order that it may be turned over and examined on every side. If one attempted to overturn a large, flat piece of ice in the water one would have to lift a goodly proportion of its weight. Book How the Mind Works Classic Reprint

Download or read book How the Mind Works Classic Reprint written by Cyril Burt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-25 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How the Mind Works It is sometimes said that 'we are all of us bound to be psychologists.' The proper study indeed the inevitable study - of mankind is man. Yet for the most part we commonly assume that human nature is a thing about which any reasonable person can safely generalize and reach a satisfactory View. To manufacture or repair a lifeless machine - a motor-car, a microphone, a submarine - expert knowledge is essential. But to follow the workings of the growing mind, to guide its development and correct its faults, for that, we imagine, nothing but common sense is needed. No view could be more mistaken. Common sense alone will no more enable us to fathom the mysteries of the human conscious ness than it has helped us to solve the problems of the atom or the star. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From the Unconscious, to the Conscious One duty, and one only, lies upon him - to be faithful to the author's meaning. No attempt at literary finish can palliate or excuse the slightest departure from that duty in a work which, however scientific in essence, is necessarily somewhat controversial in form. When to this duty there are added the obligations which the honour of personal friendship involves, faithfulness in rendering the idea becomes doubly imperative. To this all other considerations must give place. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
