Book La Salle the Mississippi and the Gulf

Download or read book La Salle the Mississippi and the Gulf written by Robert S. Weddle and published by Texas A & M University Press. This book was released on 1987 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three centuries after the French explorer La Salle was murdered in the Texas wilds, this volume presents translations of three obscure documents that broaden the view of the man and his exploits. The first non-Spanish effort to settle areas along the Gulf of Mexico is seen from the perspectives of La Salle's engineer; a Spanish pilot who searched for the French colony; and two French lads who, orphaned as a result of the Fort Saint-Louis massacre, lived first among the Texas Indians, then the Spaniards. The engineer Minet relates both La Salle's 1682 exploration of the Mississippi River and his 1685 voyage to the Gulf of Mexico, from which Minet himself returned to France and prison rather than share the fate of the colonists. The pilot Juan Enríquez Barroto recounts the Spaniards' 1687 circumnavigation of the Gulf, the finding of La Salle's wrecked ships, and the first close examination of Texas and Louisiana bays and rivers, including the Mississippi passes. Among the few survivors of La Salle's venture, the two Talon brothers returned to France as adults to give information that was vital to a new undertaking, Iberville's Mississippi colony. In an unparalleled adventure narrative and exploration account, they describe the land, its flora and fauna, and the natives' lives and languages--data of incalculable historical value. From all three documents, significant sidelights emerge: Minet's description of the English colony of Jamestown, Enríquez's finding of Spanish castaways among the Atákapa Indians, and the Talons' description of life in seventeenth-century Mexico. With careful scholarly attention--historical introductions, annotation, and commentaries by noted authorities--the documents emphasize the tendency of modern observers to ascribe to La Salle a knowledge of geography that simply was not possible in his time. They lead the editors to a somewhat surprising conclusion about why the vaunted explorer landed in Texas when he was seeking the Mississippi.

Book Materials concerning La Salle s attempt in 1684 to establish a colony in Louisiana at the mouth of the Mississippi including a travel report by Jean Cavelier and two letters to the duque de Jovenazo from Baron de Lahontan in Lisbon

Download or read book Materials concerning La Salle s attempt in 1684 to establish a colony in Louisiana at the mouth of the Mississippi including a travel report by Jean Cavelier and two letters to the duque de Jovenazo from Baron de Lahontan in Lisbon written by Louis Armand de Lom d'Arce baron de Lahontan and published by . This book was released on 1699 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photostatic copy, probably from around 1924, of an account by Jean Cavelier, brother of Robert Cavelier de La Salle, of the disastrous expedition to establish a French colony in Louisiana at the mouth of the Mississippi River between 1684 and 1688, and two related letters, dated Sept. 1 and Sept. 7, 1699, to the duque de Jovenazo from the baron de Lahontan in Lisbon. The account, written long after the fact, but given a day-by-day journal character by the use of marginal dates, was originally intended for the marquis de Seignelay, French minister of state. The expedition left La Rochelle, in July 1684, and from the beginning, was plagued with disasters--bad weather, illness, and insubordination by the naval commander Beaujeu. The loss of the main supply ship, and La Salle's illness in the West Indies threw the expedition into disarray. Continuing on with 180 men, La Salle missed the mouth of the Mississippi and ended up in what is now Matagorda Bay, Texas. The ill-fated expedition tried twice to reach Canada, and during the second attempt, in Jan. 1687, La Salle was assassinated by one of his own men. Cavelier did reach Montreal in June 1688, and sailed home to France in Aug. 1688. Along with his copy of Cavelier's journal, Lahontan sends two letters which he wrote to the duke of Jovenazo, dated Sept. 1 and Sept. 9, 1699, in Lisbon, discussing Spanish concerns about French claims to territory in the Gulf of Mexico. A cover letter, dated Jan. 31, 1700, informs the marqués del Carpio that copies are being sent to the Consejo de Indias.
