Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Flame of Eternity provides a reexamination and new interpretation of Nietzsche's philosophy and the central role that the concepts of eternity and time, as he understood them, played in it. According to Krzysztof Michalski, Nietzsche's reflections on human life are inextricably linked to time, which in turn cannot be conceived of without eternity. Eternity is a measure of time, but also, Michalski argues, something Nietzsche viewed first and foremost as a physiological concept having to do with the body. The body ages and decays, involving us in a confrontation with our eventual death. It is in relation to this brute fact that we come to understand eternity and the finitude of time. Nietzsche argues that humanity has long regarded the impermanence of our life as an illness in need of curing. It is this "pathology" that Nietzsche called nihilism. Arguing that this insight lies at the core of Nietzsche's philosophy as a whole, Michalski seeks to explain and reinterpret Nietzsche's thought in light of it. Michalski maintains that many of Nietzsche's main ideas--including his views on love, morality (beyond good and evil), the will to power, overcoming, the suprahuman (or the overman, as it is infamously referred to), the Death of God, and the myth of the eternal return--take on new meaning and significance when viewed through the prism of eternity.

Book Renewing the Senses

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mark R. Wynn
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford
  • Release : 2013-01-24

Download or read book Renewing the Senses written by Mark R. Wynn and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-01-24 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Republic, Plato suggests that the enlightened person will find himself disoriented on his return to the realm of the shadows. So at the very beginning of the Western philosophical tradition, there is a clear affirmation of the idea that following enlightenment, the sensory world can be differently experienced. In this book, Mark Wynn takes up this idea, but argues that 'enlightenment' or spiritual maturity may result in, and may partly consist in, not so much a state of confusion or bewilderment in our experience of sensory things, but in a renewal of the realm of the senses. On this view, the 'shadows', as they feature in the seer's experience, can bear the imprint of religious thoughts and attitudes, and it is therefore possible to be occupied with religious thoughts even as we engage with the realm of sensory things. And if that is so, then one standard objection to Christian, and in general broadly Platonic, conceptions of the spiritual life will have been removed: attending to the realm of religious truth need not after all imply any neglect of the world of sensory forms; and it may even be that it is in our encounter with the realm of sensory forms that certain religious insights are presented to us most vividly.

Book Spiritual Traditions and the Virtues

Download or read book Spiritual Traditions and the Virtues written by Mark R. Wynn and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spiritual Traditions and the Virtues develops a philosophical appreciation of the spiritual life. The book shows how a certain conception of spiritual good, one that is rooted in Thomas Aquinas's account of infused moral virtue, can generate a distinctive vision of human life and the possibilities for spiritual fulfilment. Wynn examines the character of the goods to which spiritual traditions are directed; the structure of such traditions, including the connection between their practical and creedal commitments; the relationship between the various vocabularies that are used to describe, from the insider's perspective, progress in the spiritual life; the significance of tradition as an epistemic category; and the question of what it takes for a spiritual tradition to be handed on from one person to another. In his account of the virtues, Aquinas shows how our relations to the everyday world can be folded into our relationship to the divine or sacred reality otherwise conceived. In this sense, he offers a vision of how it is possible to live between heaven and earth. Spiritual Traditions and the Virtues considers how that vision can be extended across the central domains of human thought and experience, and how it can deepen and diversify our understanding of what it is for a human life to be lived well.

Book Discipleship Secularity and the Modern Self

Download or read book Discipleship Secularity and the Modern Self written by Judith A. Merkle and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-07-23 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Judith A. Merkle examines the situation of Christian spirituality today, in a secular age, through the images of dance, silence, and music. Drawing on the work of Charles Taylor as well as core aspects of the tradition of Christian theology on discipleship, Merkle asks how these new conditions affect the practice of Christianity as modern discipleship. The author calls God the music maker. She argues that response to the reality of God can be captured through the image of dance. Merkle reminds us that people in secular society connect to God in diverse ways, not in the least through the call of creation and the call of conscience. She explores discipleship as a lens through which we can understand how a community of faith, service, prayer, worship, and sacramentality can be viewed and integrated in daily life. She emphasizes how the interconnection between prayer, Eucharist, and a believing community is inseparable from the dance of discipleship as it can be lived in secular society. The image of dancing to silent music is a powerful symbol of Christian religious experience in modern times.

Book The Power of the Eternal Now

Download or read book The Power of the Eternal Now written by Jeremy Lopez and published by Destiny Image Publishers. This book was released on 2011-04-19 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Somewhat controversial, The Power of the Eternal Now opens Christians’ minds in a unique way to the truth of God outside of time. Prophet Jeremy Lopez calls believers to live in the now reality, putting aside inaction and passivity and truly grasping hold of the truth that God speaks about their lives. God exists in the eternals, which is exactly where you are called to live as well. “God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus” (Eph. 2:6 NIV). Time is an illusion when it comes to our nature as children of God. The reality of our true identity in Christ is found in the now. But often we don’t want to deal with our many problems, so we look at the clock and “invent time” as a way to avoiding them. We are more than conquerors—now! We are holy, chosen, beloved, accepted, redeemed, justified, and cleansed—now! These are not future wishes and dreams. These are not time-based actions. These are realities of our true identity in Christ and they are found in the now.

Book Spirituality and the Good Life

Download or read book Spirituality and the Good Life written by David McPherson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a broad philosophical study of the nature of spirituality and its relationship to human well-being, addressing an area of contemporary philosophy that has been largely underexplored. David McPherson brings together a team of scholars to examine the importance of specific spiritual practices (including prayer, contemplation, and ritual observance) and spiritually informed virtues (such as piety, humility, and existential gratitude) for 'the good life'. This volume also considers and exemplifies how philosophy itself, when undertaken as a humanistic rather than scientistic enterprise, can be a spiritual exercise and part of a spiritual way of life. Clarifying key concepts, and engaging with major religious traditions such as Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and Confucianism, this book will appeal to students and scholars from various disciplines, including theology, sociology, and psychology, as well as to philosophers, ethicists, and other readers who are interested in modern spiritual life.
