Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lismore Papers, Vol. 3 of 5: Autobiographical Notes, Remembrances and Diaries of Sir Richard Boyle, First and 'Great' Earl of Cork Lismore Papers-made the Notes and Illustrations of the new volumes completing the First Series even fuller and more inclusive of noticeable things than the former, as well as added a minute verbal index of them, it does not seem needful to occupy much space by way of another Introduction. The characteristics and values of Volumes I. And II. Belong equally to Volumes III., IV., and V.; and, indeed, nearly all the things to which Special attention was called in our first Introduction, receive further illustration in the new volumes, as will more distinctly appear when the whole of these materials are turned to account in a full Life of the Great Earl, to be prefixed to the Second Series of the Lismore Papers (deo volmte). But besides, - as the Index to the entire Notes and Illustrations reveals, - there are abundant new Facts and Acts and Events and Circumstances, and light and shadow of individual and national Lives. Book Making Ireland British 1580 1650

Download or read book Making Ireland British 1580 1650 written by Nicholas Canny and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2001-05-03 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive study of all the plantations that were attempted in Ireland during the years 1580-1650. It examines the arguments advanced by successive political figures for a plantation policy, and the responses which this policy elicited from different segments of the population in Ireland. The book opens with an analysis of the complete works of Edmund Spenser who was the most articulate ideologue for plantation. The author argues that all subsequent advocates of plantation, ranging from King James VI and I, to Strafford, to Oliver Cromwell, were guided by Spenser's opinions, and that discrepancies between plantation in theory and practice were measured against this yardstick. The book culminates with a close analysis of the 1641 insurrection throughout Ireland, which, it is argued, steeled Cromwell to engage in one last effort to make Ireland British.

Book Walter Ralegh

Download or read book Walter Ralegh written by Alan Gallay and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a Bancroft Prize-winning historian, a biography of the famed poet, courtier, and colonizer, showing how he laid the foundations of the English Empire Sir Walter Ralegh was a favorite of Queen Elizabeth. She showered him with estates and political appointments. He envisioned her becoming empress of a universal empire. She gave him the opportunity to lead the way. In Walter Ralegh, Alan Gallay shows that, while Ralegh may be best known for founding the failed Roanoke colony, his historical importance vastly exceeds that enterprise. Inspired by the mystical religious philosophy of hermeticism, Ralegh led English attempts to colonize in North America, South America, and Ireland. He believed that the answer to English fears of national decline resided overseas -- and that colonialism could be achieved without conquest. Gallay reveals how Ralegh launched the English Empire and an era of colonization that shaped Western history for centuries after his death.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first general survey of the history of women in early modern Ireland. Based on an impressive range of source material, it presents the results of original research into women’s lives and experiences in Ireland from 1500 to 1800. This was a time of considerable change in Ireland as English colonisation, religious reform and urbanisation transformed society on the island. Gaelic society based on dynastic lordships and Brehon Law gave way to an anglicised and centralised form of government and an English legal system.
