Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lincoln-Douglas Debates, 1858: Galesburg, Illinois, Oct 7, 1858; Excerpts From Newspapers and Other Sources, From the Files of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection As to the alleged inconsistency in his speeches, Lincoln denied that there was any ground for such a charge. But the Judge will have it, he said, that if we do not confess that there is a sort of inequality be tween the white and black races which justifies us in making them slaves, we must, then, insist that there is a degree of equality that requires us to make them our wives. He had never manifested any impatience, he proceeded to explain, with the necessities springing from the actual presence of black people, and the actual existence of slavery in' the South, but had maintained that in legislating for new coun tries where slavery did not exist, there was no just rule other than that of moral and abstract right - the rule of the Declara tion of Independence that all people have a right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. This was not to be misunder stood, he said, except by men interested to misunderstand it. Granting that such a view could not be announced in a certain section of the country, he asked: Is it the true test of the soundness of a doctrine that in some places people won't let you proclaim it? Then 'he made a prediction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lincoln-Douglas Debates of 1858 A new edition of the speeches made by Stephen A. Douglas and Abraham Lincoln in the set debate during the Illinois senatorial canvass of 1858 would seem a worthy and appropriate part of the general commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of that event. While the campaign was local in its inception, it became national in its sigui ficance and in its results. The issues as brought out in the debate, especially in the speech of Douglas at Freeport, widened, if they did not open, the breach between him and the southern Democrats, made a Split in the convention of 1860 a foregone conclusion, and thereby paved the way for Republican success and the election of Abraham Lin coln to the presidency. The debate also marked the high - tide of the stump method of campaigning; it furnishes, through the unusual space given to it in news paper reports, an Opportunity to study this unique phe nomenon of frontier life; while the increasing number of printing presses, the extension of the mail routes, and consequent change in campaign methods, lend to this canvass the melancholy interest of a passing Show. The speeches themselves are of a high order of debate, and of unusual import; those of Douglas set forth his untenable position and his impossible theory in the clearest terms; those of Lincoln state the arguments of the new Repub lican party as they had not been outlined before; and the combined effect of the whole is a survey of the political aspect of the day not to be found elsewhere. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln and Reformers: Frederick Douglas; Excerpts From Newspapers and Other Sources During his years in the marshal's and recorder's offices Douglass never felt that he had to hold his tongue on public issues. The charge, made by one critic, that a fat office gagged him could hardly hold water. Always outspoken, he continued to hit hard at practices which he considered unwise, unjust, or prejudice-rid den. The most prominent Negro of his day, his words carried weight on both sides of the color line. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Lincoln Douglas Debate Classic Reprint written by John Hugh Bowers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-27 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lincoln-Douglas Debate American history, reveals human nature deal= ing with momentous problems, and illuminates the methods by which the great art of public speech is used to influence public conduct in a great epoch. Because Lincoln and Douglas, in the course of the debate, each made references to their past records, it is necessary to have in mind the brief sketch, here given, of the life history of each. And because the debate was on the questions of slavery, and referred so frequently to the history of that question, it is necessary to here give first a very brief review of at least those facts, in the history of slavery, to which the speakers refer. The speakers inferred that their hearers had fresh in memory the recent history of slavery agitation and legislation, and, accordingly, we here offer a narration of such facts as are necessary to understand the mean ing of the debate, before giving the debate it self. Therefore, this volume presents, first, a brief sketch of each debater, just sufficient to under stand the references in the debate; second, just enough of the history of the slavery question to comprehend the allusions of the speakers; third, the circumstances attending the debate along with the chief arguments and replies of each speaker; fourth, the major and important portions of the speeches of Lincoln and of Doug las are given in the exact words of the speaker.
