Under these circumstances, we were sufiiciently well pleased when the order came to join the regiment at Clonmel a and, being put in charge of one Corporal Gorman, we began our journe profoundly ignorant both of the route we were to ollow, and the extent of funds which would be allowed us during the continuance of the march. The "Confessions of Harry Lorrequer" had been favourably received by a public ever indulgent to first efforts; and the Press most good-naturedly overlooked many an error in the anxiety to welcome one who had, after all, only contributed the overflowings of a very light-hearted and enjoyable temperament. Like the lucky Cockney, who shot a swallow on the wing in his first effort at sportsmanship, I felt great reluctance ever to reload my piece for a second trial. Small as the success was, I had no fancy to peril it. I fancied how my silence might foster many a speculation of what I might have been were I only prudent enough not to destroy the illusion. Single-speech Hamilton is a celebrity to this hour; and there was great wisdom in the example. Excellent as were all these reasons - doubly powerful to one who loved his idleness, as it has been my unlucky lot to do through life - they were all routed by an invitation from my publisher to try my hand at something beyond the peace campaigns of a soldier. These publishers are wonderful fellows. They hold the curtain which hangs between the author and the public; and even at the chance glimpses they permit you to catch of "the house," they suggest most ambitious longings for the applause of the crowded benches before you. My first impulse on receiving his letter was to say, No; the thing has made a hit, let me live on it so long as it lasts, and be forgotten when it ceases to be remembered. Good spirits, which mainly prompted all I have said, are not to be summoned at will. Who knows what temperament might prevail during another and a longer effort?
