Book The Life Unpublished Letters and Philosophical Regimen of Anthony Earl of Shaftesbury Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life Unpublished Letters and Philosophical Regimen of Anthony Earl of Shaftesbury Classic Reprint written by Anthony Ashley Cooper Shaftesbury and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life, Unpublished Letters, and Philosophical Regimen of Anthony, Earl of Shaftesbury The present volume consists of a sketch of the life, of the unpublished letters, and of the philosophical regimen of that most fascinating English moralist, the third Earl of Shaftesbury. The entire material for the work, apart from the letters addressed to Locke, has been obtained from the Shaftesbury Papers, which are now deposited in the Record Office in London. Mr. Thomas Fowler in his Shaftesbury and Hutcheson expressed the belief that these papers would well repay a more careful investigation than he was able to give them in the preparation of his book. Such research has been made and the results of it appear in the present work. The perusal of it will not only fully confirm the favourable forecast as to the probable worth of the manuscripts for the life of Shaftesbury, but will also reveal, I believe, that they contained from his pen one of the most remarkable unpublished contri butions of modern times in the domain of philosophic thought. Book The British Moralists and the Internal Ought

Download or read book The British Moralists and the Internal Ought written by Stephen L. Darwall and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-04-28 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a major work in the history of ethics, and provides the first study of early modern British philosophy in several decades. Professor Darwall discerns two distinct traditions feeding into the moral philosophy of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. On the one hand, there is the empirical, naturalist tradition, comprising Hobbes, Locke, Cumberland, Hutcheson, and Hume, which argues that obligation is the practical force that empirical discoveries acquire in the process of deliberation. On the other hand, there is a group including Cudworth, Shaftesbury, Butler, and in some moments Locke, which views obligation as inconceivable without autonomy and which seeks to develop a theory of the will as self-determining.

Book The Spirit of Modern Republicanism

Download or read book The Spirit of Modern Republicanism written by Thomas L. Pangle and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1990-10-15 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pangle reexamines the moral philosophy of the Founding Fathers and finds that at the heart of the Framers' republicanism was a dramatically new vision of civic virtue, religious faith, and intellectual life, rooted in an unprecendented commitment to private and economic liberties, and that this commitment represented a departure from both the classical and biblical traditions. He challenges those who explain 18th century political thought exclusively in terms of historical circumstances, Calvinistic faith, or economic and social ideology. He develops a new interpretation of John Locke's moral and political philosophy, arguing that Locke's greatest political and rhetorical achievement was in transforming the God of the Bible into the God of reason and nature; and shows Locke's influence on the Framers' thought.
