Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of William Ewart Gladstone IN the following pages the aim of the writer has been to present a View at once summary and impar tial of the Parliamentary career, political opinions, and practical enactments of the subject of the bio graphy, from his first return to the Parliament created by the Reform Bill of 1832 down to the last day of the existence of the Whig Parliament of the middle class. The Author has not concealed his( admiration of Mr. Gladstone in the fields of fiscall and electoral reform. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of William Ewart Gladstone, Vol. 1 of 2: 1809 1872 Some may think in this connection that I have made the preponderance of politics excessive in the story of a genius of signal versatility, to whom politics were only one interest among many. 0no doubt speeches, debates, bills, divisions, motions, and manoeuvres of party, like the manna that fed the children of Israel in the wilderness, lose their savour and power of nutriment on the second gay.) Yet after all it was to his thoughts, his purposes, his i eals, his performances as states man, in all the widest significance of that lofty and honourable designation, that Mr. Gladstone owes the lasting substance of his fame. His life was ever 'greatly absorbed, ' he said, 'in working the institutions of his country.' Here we mark a signal trait. Not for two centuries, since the historic strife of anglican and puritan, had our island produced am in whom the religious motive was paramount in the like degree. He was not only a political force but a moral force. He strove to use all the powers of his own genius and the powers of the state for moral purposes and religious. Nevertheless his mission in all its forms was action. He had none of that detachment, often found among superior minds, which we honour for its dis interestedness, even while we lament its impotence in result. The track in which he moved, the instruments that he employed, were the track and the instruments, the sword and the trowel, of political action and what is called the Gladstonian era was distinctively a political era. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of William Ewart Gladstone: With a Portrait Gladstone's family are in the hands of Mr. Morley, whose forthcoming Memoir is expected with such eager interest. Although I have concealed neither my personal admiration for Mr. Gladstone, nor my general agree ment with his policy at home and abroad, I have abstained from expressing, and, so far as was possible, from implying any Opinions of my own. It has been my object to tell the story from Mr. Gladstone's own point of View, explaining rather than criticising, but not without reference to contemporary criticism on the one hand, and to the verdict of events on the other. My personal acquaintance with Mr. Gladstone was slight, and confined to his old age. But he was several times good enough to favour me with reminiscences of much interest and value. Though I made no note of them, it is difficult to forget what Mr. Gladstone said. I have not hesitated to avail myself of them so far, and so far only, as they threw light upon historic incidents whose main features were already known. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from William Ewart Gladstone: Life and Public Services Many writers have been at work of late compiling a "Life of Gladstone." Some who have never seen his face nor heard his voice, will seek to tell the story of his life and record the grand service he rendered his country and his age. Each author will address his readers from his own particular standpoint, and as "every eye sees its own rainbow," so every author will describe his own "Gladstone." It was my privilege to be actively engaged in that grand Campaign which ended in the Disestablishment and Disendowment of the Irish Church. In this happy service I was brought much in contact with Mr. Gladstone, and learned to regard him with enthusiastic homage for the thoroughness and dignity of his leadership. Many years have passed since that eventful period. I have been for ten years a citizen of the United States, and I have been stirred with the ambition to tell my adopted fellow-countrymen what I know of Gladstone and his brave high service to his country and the world. While I write, memory reverts to the days when the masses of England were moving swiftly in the direction of treason and anarchy. I remember unhappy, discontented men, standing at church doors on Sunday mornings, exhibiting loaves of bread dipped in blood, as a token of their feelings and a menace of their purposes. I saw, when a boy, the Bible torn leaf from leaf in the market place, and God denounced as having "lost his thunderbolts and forgotten to care for the poor." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of William Ewart Gladstone, Vol. 2 Rarely, if ever, in the course of our history has there been such a mixture of high considerations, legislative, military, commercial, foreign, and constitutional, each for the most part traversing the rest, and all capable of exercising a vital influence on public policy, as in the long and complicated session of 1860. The commercial treaty first struck the keynote of the year; and the most deeply marked and peculiar feature of the year was the silent conflict between the motives and provisions of the treaty on the one have, and the excitement and exasperation of military sentiment on the other. - Gladstone. This description extends in truth much beyond the session of a given year to the whole existence of the new cabinet, and through a highly important period in Mr. Gladstone's career. More than that, it directly links our biographic story to a series of events that created kingdoms, awoke nations, and re-made the map of Europe. The opening of this long and and complex episode as the Italian revolution. Writing to Sir John Acton in 1864 Mr. Gladstone said to him of the budget of 1860, "When viewed as a whole, it is one of the few cases in which my fortunes as an individual have been closely associated with matters of a public and even an historic interest." I will venture to recall in outline to the reader's memory the ampler background of this striking epoch in Mr. Gladstone's public life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from William Ewart Gladstone: A Biographical Study Several years ago I began thinking that no career in modern politi cal life abroad contained so many inspiring and excellent lessons for the youth and hope of America as that of William Ewart Gladstone. A series of lectures at the Armour Institute of Technology proved that a large number of people of every age and place in life were glad to hear the story of his life conceived and treated from an American point of view. These lectures have now been rewritten and many additions have been made to them from the large mass of material obtained dur ing a visit to England which gave me an extraordinary opportunity for studying the great statesman and scholar. It has been a delightful task and I can hope for no richer reward for my labor and care than this, that Americans everywhere may find in reading this volume any smallest portion of such pleasure and interest as I have enjoyed in writing it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short Life of William Ewart Gladstone: With Extracts From His Speeches and Writings In the long roll of English statesmen and party leaders there is none, probably, who has won such cordial sympathy and esteem from the American public as Mr. Gladstone. Our own political struggles are so absorbing and exhausting that in general we have little interest to spare for those electoral contests which occasionally disturb the quiet of European countries; but the 1879-'80 "campaign" in Great Britain aroused an excitement among our more intelligent classes which was only less intense than that which was seething in England itself, and here, as there, the interest centred around the stalwart figure of Mr. Gladstone. Book excerpt: Excerpt from William Ewart Gladstone In the preparation of this volume I have sought to gather material from many authentic sources, but I must gratefully acknowledge my special indebtedness to the Life of Gladstone by George Barnett Smith. Facts and language I have liberally borrowed, and without burdening my pages with frequent citations I prefer to refer to the book as the most complete and valuable account of the life of Mr. Gladstone, up to 1883, that has come to my knowledge. Mr. Gladstone's speeches and writings have been used freely as furnishing the most accurate data and the most trustworthy statement of his opinions, purposes, and motives. Instead of paraphrase or abridgement, it has seemed to me best to let him, very often, speak for himself.
