Book excerpt: Complaining that 18th-century Irish novelist William Carleton has been unfairly denigrated by academic critics, the author attempts to explain why he believes that six (possibly seven) of Carleton's novels are major works that present a wide range of significant comic and tragicomic fictional accomplishments. Each of the seven novels (including Fardorougha the Miser, Valentine M'Clutchy, The Black Prophet, and The Tithe-Proctor) is accorded a separate chapter and later works and novellas are also given, albeit somewhat shorter, treatment. The work of literary critic Bakhtin is a common analytical tool used throughout the text. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Likened to Dickens, Cervantes and Turgenev, and described as "rising like a mountain over the men of his time, " Carleton was the first great fictional chronicler of the Irish people. That his writings succeeded in offending "every class of Irishmen" indicated the sometimes brutal candor with which he went about his work. This 1968 unfinished autobiography covers the first 28 rich, difficult years of his life, taking him from an idyllic childhood in the Clogher valley to a bed of rags and straw in Dublin, from which, equipped with only his genius and a powerful sense of destiny, the young Carleton went out upon the world.

Book The Life of William Carleton Vol 1

Download or read book The Life of William Carleton Vol 1 written by William Carleton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of William Carleton, Vol. 1: Being His Autobiography and Letters Nearly thirty years have run their course since the death of Carleton, yet no attempt has hitherto been made to write his life. The lack of a biography of so remarkable a writer leaves an obvious gap in Irish literary history. Lever, Lover, Griffin, Banim, Miss Edgeworth, and Lady Morgan have each had their biographer or biographers. Carleton has either been overlooked, or the difficulty of presenting him to the world as he lived, acted, and was, has proved too great for the memoir writers of the intervening period. The difficulties involved in such a task were not such as could have been offered to any one dealing with the other novelists named. These difficulties were, however, growing fewer and less formidable with every year that passed, and the discovery of the unpublished account of Carleton's early life, now printed for the first time, helps to smooth the way of the biographer. The initial obstacle was the deficiency of material, and a hardly less serious one was the delicacy of dealing with the matter which was ultimately collected. Carleton had earned the reputation of being in every sense a "queer fish"; he had been accused of obvious and consistent insincerity; and charges of mercenary motives and of reckless partisanship were so often brought against him, with other more or less absurd accusations, that it is not surprising that the biographer has hitherto left him alone.
