This book was released on 2019-02-12 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hibernation of the Mexican Cotton Boll Weevil Until this time the hibernation of the bell weevil has been less understood than any other phase of its life history. This was due to the great difficulty in obtaining the necessary data and the fact that the phenomena of hibernation are not necessarily identical in different seasons. In fact, it will be seen from the following pages that there have been very important dissimilarities between the years when special observations have been under way. The necessary repeated work in large cages in different localities has now been carried on and extensive field observations have been made in various representative parts of the infested area as to the natural situations in which the hibernating weevils occur. As a result, the present bulletin will make the life history of the bell weevil during the winter season at least as well known as any other portion of its biology. In the work leading to this bulletin practical considerations have always received primary attention. However, it has repeatedly been shown that careful detailed investigations of injurious insects may result in important suggestions for control that are not foreseen at the beginning of the work. Therefore the tepic of the hibernation of the boll weevil has been investigated from every possible standpoint. Its importance, as a critical period in the life history of a most injuri ous pest, has abundantly warranted this work. These seven chapters are included in the Collected Edition by arrangement with the publishers named. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Mexican Cotton Boll Weevil

Download or read book The Mexican Cotton Boll Weevil written by Walter David Hunter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-13 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mexican Cotton Boll Weevil: A Revision and Amplification of Bulletin 45, to Include the Most Important Observations Made in 1904 The present bulletin is based upon Bulletin N o. 45, of this Bureau entitled The Mexican Cotton Boll Weevil, issued in May, 1904. That publication included the results of investigations of this impor tant pest which had been carried on for several years. The present bulletin includes additional results that were obtained during the sea son of 1904. In form the principal changes are in the incorporation of the treatment of some 50 additional topics. AS a matter of fact, however, Some of the principal actual additions are incorporated in the tables which occur throughout the pages of the bulletin. Many additional features of the life history of the pest that may throw light upon the question of combating it have been investigated. In some respects'very considerable additions to our knowledge of the insect have been made. This is especially the case in all matters relating to dissemination. This topic deals with matters that are naturally dith Cult to determine. The work must be done in the field, and a large territory must be covered. Through the cooperation with the Louisi ana Crop Pest Commission, which was engaged in an attempt to pre vent the further advance of the boll weevil into that State, a number of entomologists occupied several months' time in the extreme eastern and northern regions infested by the pest. It is, of course, only upon the basis of such a complete knowledge of all means by which the weevil leaches new regions that the possibility of checking its advance may be considered. Such a knowledge should assist in extending the practice of spraying which, at present, is our surest and most practicable method of destroying these pests. The writer wishes to explain that in describing the habits and life histories of the apple curculio, and, to some extent also, those of the plum curculio, he has drawn freely from the writings of other entomologists. Book Plant Bugs Injurious to Cotton Bolls Classic Reprint

Download or read book Plant Bugs Injurious to Cotton Bolls Classic Reprint written by Austin Winfield Morrill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plant-Bugs Injurious to Cotton Bolls Damage by the boll weevil has brought into prominence many other insects which attack the cotton plant, the work of which has been largely overlooked. Among the most important of these minor insects are various species of plant-bugs. Many of these have been known as enemies of the cotton plant for some years, but they have received only slight attention from economic entomologists. When their damage is added to the injury done by the cotton boll weevil, still further reducing the crop, they become of such importance that full knowledge of their habits and life history is demanded. The studies upon which this bulletin is based were conducted to add to our knowledge of the biology of an important group of insect pests and of the most practical and efficient methods by which they may be controlled. Book Yoknapatawpha Blues

Download or read book Yoknapatawpha Blues written by Tim A. Ryan and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2015-04-13 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1920s and 1930s, Mississippi produced two of the most significant influences upon twentieth-century culture: the modernist fiction of William Faulkner and the recorded blues songs of African American musicians like Charley Patton, Geeshie Wiley, and Robert Johnson. In Yoknapatawpha Blues, the first book examining both Faulkner and the music of the south, Tim A. Ryan identifies provocative parallels of theme and subject in diverse regional genres and texts. Placing Faulkner's literary texts and prewar country blues song lyrics on equal footing, Ryan illuminates the meanings of both in new and unexpected ways. He provides close analysis of the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 in Faulkner's "Old Man" and Patton's "High Water Everywhere"; racial violence in the story "That Evening Sun" and Wiley's "Last Kind Words Blues"; and male sexual dysfunction in Sanctuary and Johnson's "Dead Shrimp Blues." This interdisciplinary study reveals how the characters of Yoknapatawpha County and the protagonists in blues songs similarly strive to assert themselves in a threatening and oppressive world. By emphasizing the modernism found in blues music and the echoes of black vernacular culture in Faulkner's writing, Yoknapatawpha Blues links elucidates the impact of both Faulkner's fiction and roots music on the culture of the modern South, and of the nation.
