Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from George Canning It would be difficult to mention any political me moirs, diaries, or correspondence published during the past half century in which the name of Canning does not occur, and which do not incidentally throw light upon his character or on the impression made by him during his lifetime. Omitting ephemeral publications, and Mr. J. Frank Newton's pamphlet, 'the Early Days of George Canning, ' the list would possibly begin with the Life of Sir James Mackintosh, ' published in 1885, and would for the moment end with Mr. Hodder's Life of the Seventh Earl of Shaftesbury.' It includes, with others, the Diaries and the Letters to his Family of the first Earl of Malmesbury, ' the 'life and Letters of William Wilberforce, ' Lord Stanhope's Life of Pitt, ' and Lord John Russell's Memorials and Life of C. J. Fox Mr. Edmund Phipps's Memoir of Robert Plume Ward; the Diaries and Correspondence of George Rose; Mr. Horace Twiss's Life of Lord Eldon; the Diaries and Correspondence of Lord Col chester the Duke of Buckingham's Memoirs of the Courts and Cabinets of George III., the Prince Regent. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from George Canning and His Times In the beginning of October, 1824, Mr. Canning was travelling with the author, alone, from London, to Lord Bristol's, at Ickworth. We started early: in those times, a distance of seventy miles was not accomplished in less than eight or nine hours. On the morning of our departure, there appeared in the New Times (then a daily paper), a letter, containing an anecdote respecting the college days of Lord Liverpool and Mr. Canning. After we had proceeded a stage, I inquired if it were a true story. He replied, that it was substantially correct. And he then took up the history of his life from those days, and never ceased till we were within a few miles of Cambridge, when, tired with talking, he said he must defer the rest for another opportunity. That opportunity occurred within three weeks, for (business having called him to London) we again returned to Ickworth together; and he then brought to a conclusion the story of his life.
