Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shell Life: An Introduction to the British Mollusca HE object of this work is much the same as that which led to the writing of its companion volume The Romance of Wild Flowers - to awaken an interest in, and lead to a closer study of, the creatures de scribed. Shells and their makers, of course, necessi tated a different kind of treatment from that accorded to the wild flowers; but the author's plan of making his readers first acquainted with the outstanding characteristics of the prevailing types of structure as embodied in such familiar forms as the snail, the mussel, and the cuttle, will enable them to follow him throughout the further chapters. Book A Popular History of the Mollusca

Download or read book A Popular History of the Mollusca written by Mary Roberts and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Popular History of the Mollusca: Comprising a Familiar Account of Their Classification, Instincts and Habits, and of the Growth and Distinguishing Characters of Their Shells The following pages, compiled chiefly from the writings of Mr. Reeve, treat not so much of shells, as of their animal occupants; and this is desirable, because shells are too often regarded as merely objects of ornament or of fancy. Owing to the retired habits of the Mollusca, and to their soft and perishable nature, Conchology has but slowly advanced in the true spirit of a science. Considerable additions have, however, been made to our knowledge of the animals by drawings taken of them of late years in a living state, and a sufficient number and variety of typical kinds have been examined to afford a tolerably ample view of the whole. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural History: Mollusca The four Classes of animals which have been considered in the preceding volumes of this series we have seen to have one character in common; viz. the possession of a bony framework within the body, of which a jointed spine is the most essential element. This character, which unites those four Classes into one great group, and gives to that group the name Vertebrata, by which it is distinguished among naturalists, we have seen, however, by slow degrees, deteriorated, if I may use such an expression, from bone to cartilage, and gradually diminished in its development, until, in the lowest of the Fishes, it can scarcely be recognised at all. I come now to treat of animals in which the bony skeleton no longer exists. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mollusca But the chief defect of this school is that it has added to the superstructure without strengthening the foundation, and has thus weakened instead of improved the fabric of our knowledge. Upon the distinction of old species depends not only generic and sub generic classification, but even the reality of new species, which are necessarily contrasted with them. The task of rehabilitating old species, for which these writers have unique facilities, is by them neglected in favour of the easier and more showy work of describing novelties, which could be done at least as well by others. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of British Mollusca, Vol. 1: And Their Shells Our valued and lamented friend, the late William Thompson, of Belfast, who had devoted years of study to the British Mollusks, aided us, as long as he lived, with every possible assistance that lay in his power. In all that concerns the distribution of Irish species, his hand may be traced, and advice, notes and specimens were con stantly coming from him for our use. For many Of the details that we are enabled to give respecting the distri bution and range of the species described, we owe the fullest thanks to Mr. M'andrew, of Liverpool, who, with a zeal too rarely imitated, has for years spared neither expense nor labour in searching out marine animals in their deepest recesses, a work, often-times, of no small risk and danger. Download or read book The Mollusca of Somerset written by Ernest W. Swanton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mollusca of Somerset: Land, Freshwater, Estuarine and Marine Shells have been poetically designated the "Medals of Creation." They occur in rocks of all ages, and everywhere tell their own story, e.g., in Somerset the huge ammonites of the oolite quarries indicate that countless years ago parts of the county were covered with a tropical sea in which cephalopods swarmed. Existing as well as fossil forms afford valuable evidence of a past order of things. The marine shells that occur in sandy and pebbly beds far inland on the moors are eloquent witnesses to the great alterations of the coast line of the county within comparatively recent times. The myriads of shells of Helicella barharn (perhaps better known under its old name of Helix acuta), which live in the hollows of the dunes between Burnham and Berrow, do not attract the attention of the majority of pedestrians, but to the conchologist they have a special interest. Their presence there is to him a link in the chain of evidence that certain elements of our existing fauna arrived from the continent by a land connection in the south-west, of which the Scilly Isles are vestiges. As with Helicella barbnra, so it is with all the other mollusca, there is not a single species whose life history is devoid of interest in some way or the other. It is stimulating to have a hobby, especially if it compels one to "Go forth under the open sky, and list To Nature's teachings." One of the most delightful of such hobbies is conchology, and it is never too late to start upon it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mollusca of the Chicago Area, Vol. 1: The Pelecypoda Some eight years ago Willey estimated that the whole number of North American species might ultimately reach one thousand, but that limit has been passed already, as I have the names of over sixteen hundred, including varieties, and it is not at all probable that, after the most conservative study and elimination, the number would be reduced by more than three hundred, if so many.
