Download or read book The Life of Jesus Classic Reprint written by Oskar Holtzmann and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-05 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus Life OF jesus and christianity. - But history does not stand alone in being unable to refuse the task of giving a scientific account Of the life of Jesus. The execution of the work is imperatively demanded by the Christian religion itself. The great interest which the person Of Jesus, his public ministry, and his fate, possess for Christianity is as clearly as possible shown by this fact, that of all its sacred writings, the four Gospels are unquestionably the best known and the most popular throughout the whole Christian world.1 The early Christian community might have rested satisfied with these four written Sources. It read in them how the life of Jesus was passed and from the fact that the Church handed down these writings from generation to generation as her sacred treasure, it might be regarded as an act of piety to believe in them in the smallest matters as well as in those of great importance without further question. But such an attitude can no longer be taken at the present day, and for these reasons. On the one hand, scholars have diligently applied themselves to the study of the Biblical writings, and more especially the Gospels. On the other hand, we know also, at least with approximate exactness, how it was that the New Testament arose. Thus it is now an established fact that. Book The Life of Jesus Christ Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life of Jesus Christ Classic Reprint written by Heinrich Ewald and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus Christ Even in the period next after this violent stifling, this mysterious stillness of the new Spirit in the world lasts on until it irresistibly penetrates it ever more strongly, and then soon both Jews and heathens say enough of it, when they had already lost the opportunity of being able to know most accurately about Christ. Thus Flavius Josephus is the only non-christian historian of the first century we possess who speaks of Christ. In the first indeed of his two great works - the history of the Jewish War - he did not speak of Him, he had no need in respect of the principal subject of it. But we cannot see how he, in the Antiquities, should have neglected to speak, however briefly, of Christ and His followers; as there he mentions much far less important, and that work professes to give a general history of the people, according to all its aims, various divisions, and manifold crises. Had he also in this work said nothing of Christianity, that could only be explained from a want of clear views on the subjects which had so completely fettered him, that he preferred to be silent on a matter so imperfectly known to him. He had certainly, when he wrote his work for the roman-greek world, a secret horror of every thing Messianic, and Christianity must have appeared to him, as to all the Jews of his views, something incomprehensible; and' besides, as it was felt how much this last division had injured the Jews, it must have been a subject disagree able and repugnant. But these grounds seem insuflicient for his entirely overlooking it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: 2012 Reprint of Original 1894 Edition. Exact facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Many have come to discover the writings of William Law through the publication of selections of his work edited by Andrew Murray. "A Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life" (1728) deeply influenced the chief actors in the great Evangelical revival. John and Charles Wesley, George Whitefield, Henry Venn, Thomas Scott, and Thomas Adam all express their deep obligation to the author. "The Serious Call" also affected others deeply. Samuel Johnson, ] Gibbon, Lord Lyttelton and Bishop Home all spoke enthusiastically of its merits; and it is still the only work by which its author is popularly known. It has high merits of style, being lucid and pointed to a degree. Though not the most popular, perhaps the most interesting, original and suggestive of all Law's works are those he wrote in his later years, after he had become an enthusiastic admirer of Jacob Boehme, the Teutonic theosopher. From his earliest years, he had been deeply impressed with the piety, beauty and thoughtfulness of the writings of the Christian mystics. However, it was not till after his accidental meeting with the works of Boehme, about 1734, that pronounced mysticism appeared in his works.

In the fall of 1832, he was elected Principal of a Classical School, located at York, Pa., and filled the office for three years with superior ability and great success. In 1835, the School was removed to Mercersburg, and converted into a college by a charter from the Legislature of the State, under the name and title of Marshall College. Download or read book Introduction to the Life of Christ Classic Reprint written by William Bancroft Hill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-16 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Life of Christ A few years ago I prepared a Guide to the Lives of Christ for English Readers. Its purpose was to give a general view of the course of modern thought concern ing the life of Christ, and especially a brief description of each of the more important Lives, written in Eng lish or accessible in translation. The need of some such guide for the inexperienced student is evident, when one realizes how many Lives of Christ, written from various stand-points and differing greatly in scholarship, are presented for his choice. This work is now out of print; so I have added it, somewhat condensed and brought down to date, as an Appendix to the present volume. If this book shall furnish to my students an intro duction to the broad and fascinating fields of Gospel criticism, I shall be satisfied. If it shall be of service to others who may wish to know what these fields contain, I shall be greatly pleased. Download or read book Studies in the Life of Christ Classic Reprint written by Andrew Martin Fairbairn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the Life of Christ These Studies in the Life of Christ were originally prepared as a series of Sunday evening discourses, while the author was a minister in Aberdeen. This is stated, partly, that he may connect them with a city and people he Will always love, and, partly, that he may thus most simply define their real character and limits. They are not. Exhaustive and critical discussions on the Gospel History, but, at most, attempts at orientation - at reach ing points of view from which the life of Christ may be understood and construed. The author hopes, should life and health be granted to him, to return to this greatest of all Histories, and deal with it in a more critical and comprehensive spirit especially in its relations to contemporary history, and in its action, through the Apostles and the Church, on the creation of Christianity. Meanwhile he sends this volume forth in the hope that it may help to make the Person it seeks to interpret more real, living, and loveable to the men of to-day. That this was so undoubtedly follows from what is indicated as to the kind of sign which they demanded. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wholly for God: The True Christian Life A few words, first of all, to let my reader know what has given rise to the publication of this volume. Last winter Dr. Whyte of Edinburgh gave a lecture on William Law, in which he directed attention to the treasures to be found in the writings of this almost forgotten, though, as he styles him, "quite incomparable author." With many others I owe Dr. Whyte a debt of gratitude for this introduction to one of the most powerful and suggestive writers on the Christian life it has been my privilege to become acquainted with. The present volume is a proof of my high appreciation of his teaching, and my desire to let others share with me in the profit to be derived from it. Not long after the delivery of the lecture, a volume of selections was published, with the title Character and Characteristics of William Law, Nonjuror and Mystic.
