Book The Life of St Vincent De Paul Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life of St Vincent De Paul Classic Reprint written by Henry Bedford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-10 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of St. Vincent De Paul The two remarkable men to whom M. Bourdoise here alludes seem to have been raised up in times of great irreligion to render extraordinary services to the Church. Jean Clement had been a Huguenot; after his conversion, he devoted himself to the teaching of Christian doctrine, and with such success that it is cal culated in one year he made on an average no less than six converts a day. His practice was to take up vosi tion near the church in which the Jesuit father eron had just been preaching; there, gathering a crowd of auditors about him, he would explain in a plain and popular way the doctrines of the Church, and enforce the arguments of the learned but somewhat severe con troversialist with a sweetness and an unction which few were able to resist. His extraordinary familiarity with the Sacred Scriptmes - for it is recorded of him that he knew nearly the whole of the Bible in French by heart - gave him great influence with the Protestants, and es' pecially with their preachers. He would first let them propose their doubts, and would then answer them with a readiness and a completeness truly marvellous in an uneducated man. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Saint Vincent De Paul He may not have been without that hankering after the ages of simple faith which besets every sensitive soul at times; yet his instinctive sagacity told him that the sun will neither stand still nor go back upon its course for all our tender longings; that God fulfils Himself in many ways; that if we would in any degree shape the world better we must begin by shaping ourselves to it as we find it. His attitude towards that new world was not one of blind hostility, but of just and even sym pathetic discrimination, of willingness to use and foster and profit by every little beginning of good ness, every little glimmer of truth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of Philanthroposts, Vol. 1: John Howard IT was natural to begin the Lives of Phi lanthropists with memoirs of Howard; but it was not at first our intention that a whole vol ume should be devoted to them. It was found di icult, however, to compress the incidents of his important career into less space, without sacrificing something of the effect which ought to be produced. For we were desirous not only to inform our young readers who Howard was, when he lived, and what he did, but to interest them in his undertakings, and cause them, by the contemplation of his example, to catch something of his spirit. This could not be done without going somewhat minutely into particu lars. General statements are unimpressive.' We are affected by details. We need to see for ourselves the very scenes in which the philanthropist was engaged, the very persons whom be relieved, and the very minutiae of the evils, however dreadful, which he sought to remedy. Then only can we appreciate thevi preface. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The most material portion of the evidence against you, continued he, after briefly rehearsing all the facts in the case, is this letter, which was found in your private desk, and which, in the opin ion of Mr. Wray, shows that you had been much in want of a large sum of money, and that, couse quently, an adequate motive existed for committing the crime. Another letter, purporting to be an answer, though unsigned by you, appears to be in your handwriting. Let me see it, if you please, said Vincent, hast ily starting from his seat, and seizing the paper with a hand tremulous from the excited state of his nerves; 1 call God to witness my declaration, added he, in a calm and subdued tone, after run ning his eye over the page, that not a' letter of this was written by me. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charles Vincent, or the Two Clerks, Vol. 1 of 2: A Tale of Commercial Life In thus whispering, as it were, in my readers' ears, previously to their entering upon the task of perusing this work, I design neither to solicit their favour, nor to ward off the critic's censure, by any effort to render him kindly disposed towards me. It is customary for an author to say some thing by way of introduction, and it is only in compliance with the usages of the party that I make these few remarks. In saying that 'i shall not attempt to produce a friendly feeling in my behalf, I do not mean to in sinuate that I am indifferent as to what may be the fate of this my first bantling: far from it.' I shall watch its progress with the anxiety experienced by the speculator, who launches his carrier-pigeon. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of the Public and Private Life of John Howard, the Philanthropist: Compiled From His Own Dairy, in the Possession of His Family The friends of the distinguished individual whose extraordinary deeds of philanthropy form the principal subject of the following pages, have long regretted that no memoir of his life has yet been presented to the public, in which full justice is done to the motives by which he was actuated in the unparalleled career of benevolence that has immortalized his name. This book was released on 2016-10-27 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Howard, the Philanthropist, and His Friends Popular Lives of varied merit have been written by Dixon, Field, and Taylor and views of Howard's services are furnished by Mr. Bellows and Dr. Guy. Howard's friends and followers deserve to have their names associated with his, and therefore brief notices respecting them are incorporated in this volume. His friends, for the most part, are little known; but I have had the good fortune to gain in formation respecting those of them who were ministers of religion, from a large collection of Funeral Sermons in the library of New College. Of Mr. Whitbread, Howard's great friend, I have learned much from Lady Isabella Whitbread, who most kindly placed before me at Southill, family documents, throwing light on his beautiful character and also upon matters relating to Howard himself and his unhappy son.
