Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Robert Owen: Philanthropist and Social Reformer, an Appreciation When the poet Coleridge was on a visit to Manchester he attended a gather ing of the Literary and Philosophical Society, and Owen had the courage to enter into public debate with him. This encounter gained for him the title of the 'reasoning machine.' Long afterwards, when again they met, Coleridge reminded Owen of this encounter, and remarked that though he (coleridge) had on his side fluency and oratorical accomplishments, Owen had certainly on his side what was more desirable - reason. Book Political Ideas of the Utopian Socialists

Download or read book Political Ideas of the Utopian Socialists written by Keith Taylor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1982. In this book, Taylor has selected for special attention the work of Saint-Simon and his disciples (the SaintSimonians), Owen, Fourier, Cabet, and Weitling - those thinkers who made the most important contributions to the development of early socialist theory. The author discusses the designation of 'utopian' which entered into the conventional vocabulary of the history of ideas, and is now used almost without question. This title argues that these thinkers were certainly utopian in the sense that they sought to describe the structure of an ideal future society.

Book excerpt: Robert Owen was one of the most important and controversial figures of his generation. Born in 1771, he lived through the Age of Revolutions and was personally touched the ideas and dramatic changes that characterised that era. Profiting enormously through the first half of his lifetime from the rise of industry, he devoted much of his time thereafter to espousing social and economic philosophy which could serve as a corrective to what he saw as the;excesses' of progress. Much of this derived from his own experience in managing cotton mills and strongly emphasised the importance of environment, education and, ultimately, co-operation. He gained fame - even notoriety - as a social reformer, applying radical ideas in the mills at New Lanark, and subsequently at the experimental community of New Harmony, Indiana, USA. Long after his death in 1858 his ideas continued to inspire others. The hagiography generated by his disciples did neither his name nor reputation much good, since they transformed the 'Social Father' of their movement into the 'Father of Socialism' a sobriquet that ill fits him, yet it sticks to this day.Ian Donnachie's engaging yet judicious study is the first biography of Owen for fifty years. This book was originally published by Tuckwell Press in 2000.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1830s, decades before Darwin published the Origin of Species, a museum of evolution flourished in London. Reign of the Beast pieces together the extraordinary story of this lost working-man's institution and its enigmatic owner, the wine merchant W. D. Saull. A financial backer of the anti-clerical Richard Carlile, the ‘Devil's Chaplain’ Robert Taylor, and socialist Robert Owen, Saull outraged polite society by putting humanity’s ape ancestry on display. He weaponized his museum fossils and empowered artisans with a knowledge of deep geological time that undermined the Creationist base of the Anglican state. His geology museum, called the biggest in Britain, housed over 20,000 fossils, including famous dinosaurs. Saull was indicted for blasphemy and reviled during his lifetime. After his death in 1855, his museum was demolished and he was expunged from the collective memory. Now multi-award-winning author Adrian Desmond undertakes a thorough reading of Home Office spy reports and subversive street prints to re-establish Saull's pivotal place at the intersection of the history of geology, atheism, socialism, and working-class radicalism.
