Book The Georgian Passion of Sts Theodore Julian Eubulus Malcamon Mocimus Salamanes

Download or read book The Georgian Passion of Sts Theodore Julian Eubulus Malcamon Mocimus Salamanes written by D.P. Curtin and published by Dalcassian Press. This book was released on 2022-06-15 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a work that is fragmentary in the form that it survives. It is drawn upon a Georgian manuscript composed around the 13th or 14th century, relating events of Christian Martyrs during the reign of the emperor Diocletian. These events either appears as a leaf from a synaxarium or an older work of hagiography that appears to have traveled through the Sassanian Empire before arriving in Georgia prior to the 6th century. Its manuscript source is unknown as it has no known parallels in the lives of medieval saints. The martyrs themselves are said to have been residing in Roman Arabia, near the mercantile city of Petra at the end of the 3rd century. This work therefore provides a rare insight into the little known world of early Arabic Christianity, and make some curious allusion to a place called 'Bacca', otherwise only noted in the Quran.

Book Fragments of the Monastery of Qennesre

Download or read book Fragments of the Monastery of Qennesre written by St. Samuel of Qartmin and published by Dalcassian Press. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The monastery of Qennesré or Qenneàrine, founded by St. John Bar Aphtonia around 530 AD on the bank of the Euphrates opposite Europus (Jérabis), provided even more patriarchs of the Church of the East than Qartamin did. It was distinguished because of the body of scholarly Christian works being produced at the time under Sassanian and later Rashidun rule. This manuscript survives in fragmentary form, drawing under the writing of Daniel of Edessa regarding the dealings of the monastery sometime during the post-Arab conquest period.

Book Monk and Mason on the Tigris Frontier

Download or read book Monk and Mason on the Tigris Frontier written by Andrew Palmer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1990-04-12 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tur cAdin is a plateau skirted by the Upper Tigris in south-eastern Turkey. Syrian Orthodox Christians of Aramaic tongue still worship in its Late Antique churches. Monks converted the region and the most powerful monastery, founded in the fourth century, is still flourishing today. This book grew out of an attempt to document more fully the early history of this abbey. It aims to rediscover the practical and symbolic function of the monuments of Tur cAdin and place them in their original social context. A recurring theme is the relationship between village and monastery and, within each, between community and individual. The final chapters also contribute to our understanding of the Syrian Orthodox community under the Abbasid caliphate. A 500-page microfiche supplement contains the first editions of the Qartmin Trilogy, a monastic text to which the book refers, constantly, and the Book of Life, a unique quasi-epigraphical document of a Christian village and its will to surive.

Book Redefining Christian Identity

Download or read book Redefining Christian Identity written by Jan J. Ginkel and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2005 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural interaction in the Middle East since the Rise of Islam - such was the title of a combined research project of the Universities of Leiden and Groningen aimed at describing the various ways in which the Christian communities of the Middle East expressed their distinct cultural identity in Muslim societies. As part of the project the symposium "Redefining Christian Identity, Christian cultural strategies since the rise of Islam" took place at Groningen University on April 7-10, 1999. This book contains the proceedings of this conference. From the articles it becomes clear that a number of distinct "cultural strategies" can be identified, some of which were used very frequently, others only in certain groups or at particular periods of time. The three main strategies that are represented in the papers of this volume are: (i) reinterpretation of the pre-Islamic Christian heritage; (ii) inculturation of elements from the new Islamic context; (iii) isolation from the Islamic context. Viewed in time, it is clear that the reinterpretation of older Christian heritage was particularly important in the first two centuries after the rise of Islam, the seventh and eighth centuries, that inculturation was the dominant theme of the Abbasid period, in the ninth to twelfth centuries, whereas from the Mongol period onwards, from the thirteenth to the eighteenth centuries, isolation more and more often occurs, although inculturation of elements from the predominantly Muslim environment never came to a complete standstill.

A. WALLIS BUDGE (1857-1934) was curator of Egyptian and Assyrian antiquities at the British Museum from 1894 to 1924. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intentionally anonymous and lacking concrete details of historical and cultural setting-and for many years suspected of messalianism-this collection of thirty memre [discourses] has been long recognized as an important, yet understudied, work of the fourth century Syriac Church. The Liber Graduum records the ups and downs of a real christian community and is not a theoretical projection. The author meanders through many themes, but always calls the readers back to the steps of Uprightness and Perfection. "So it is also with a person once he has lowered himself from all things that are on earth, has broken his mind night and day, who counts everyone else better than himself, has emptied himself from all he possessed and kisses the feet of his enemies. Our Lord will look upon this person's lowliness and send him the Spirit, the Paraclete, and he shall know the whole truth."(translation of the script on the cover).

Book A Compendious Syriac Dictionary

Download or read book A Compendious Syriac Dictionary written by Jessie Payne Smith and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 1999-02-23 with total page 633 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this major reference tool, Jessie Payne Smith has abridged the great two-volume work, 'Thesaurus Syriacus,' by her late father. But her task was not to simply edit down the earlier, massive tomes. She also provided English translations for each entry and additional notations. Her father's dictionary had translated each Syriac word into Latin. The Latin translations made it more internationally accessible; but with the decline of the use of Latin, it decreased in usefulness. Her labors have insured that it continues to benefit scholars and students of Syriac.
