Book excerpt: "The encyclopedia lists essential data on all Catholic colleges and universities and on all religious institutions of men and women, but it was not feasible to have a separate entry on each. Therefore, a representative selection was made and articles were written on some of the larger and smaller colleges and universities; and the same procedure was adopted with the religious orders and congregations. Unfortunately, space did not permit the inclusion of every important person or event in American Catholic history"--Introduction.

Book Some Seed Fell on Good Ground

Download or read book Some Seed Fell on Good Ground written by Timothy Michael Dolan and published by Catholic University of America Press + ORM . This book was released on 2012-07-30 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A historical biography that “illuminates a remarkable churchman who was in the vanguard of his time,” written by New York’s archbishop (Publishers Weekly). A man far ahead of his time, Archbishop Edwin V. O’Hara of Kansas City (1881–1956) orchestrated numerous initiatives that profoundly affected American Catholic life. His ceaseless activity as both priest and bishop sowed seeds that flourished long past his lifetime, from liturgical reform to Bible study, campus ministry to social justice, minimum wage legislation to founding the National Catholic Rural Life Conference. The pastoral challenges he confronted in the first half of the last century―institutional complacency; disorganization among Catholics and reluctance to openly profess their faith; ignorance of social justice principles; the defense of the Church in a sometimes hostile culture―all remain significant challenges for the American Church today. Timothy Michael Dolan, Archbishop of New York, researched and composed this biography and continues to cite O’Hara as his role model of an immensely effective bishop. In an effort to revisit the pioneering work of church leaders, this book includes a new preface by Archbishop Dolan. “This is the long-needed definitive life of one of the American Church’s greatest leaders.” —The Catholic Key

Download or read book Dialogue on the Frontier written by Margaret C. DePalma and published by Kent State University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A discussion of the expansion of Catholicism in the West Dialogue on the Frontier is a remarkable departure from previous scholarship, which emphasized the negative aspects of the relationship between Protestants and Catholics in the early American republic. Author Margaret C. DePalma argues that Catholic-Protestant relations took on a different tone and character in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. She focuses on the western frontier territory and explores the positive interaction of the two religions and the internal dynamics of Catholicism. When Father Stephen T. Badin arrived in the Kentucky frontier in 1793, intent on expanding Catholicism among the pioneers, he brought only his faith and courage, a capacity to work long hard hours, and an understanding of the need for meaningful interaction with his Protestant neighbors. He established the groundwork for the later arrivals of Edward D. Fenwick, the first bishop of Cincinnati, and Archbishop John B. Purcell. The interaction between these priests and the frontier Protestant community resulted in a dialogue of mutual necessity that allowed for the growth of the region, the nation, and the church. The ministries and stories of these three priests are representative of the problems the Catholic Church faced in overcoming anti-Catholic sentiment and the solutions it found in its efforts to lay a permanent foundation in the West. This book will be of great interest to scholars of the early republic and religious life and of the urban landscape of the Midwest.

Book The Vincentians A General History of the Congregation of the Mission

Download or read book The Vincentians A General History of the Congregation of the Mission written by John E. Rybolt and published by New City Press. This book was released on with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French Revolution nearly destroyed the Vincentians in France, and those in most other countries were isolated, persecuted in every degree from niggling regulations to imprisonment and martyrdom, and sometimes squeezed into oblivion. To these external miseries were added painful internal schisms: the Italians, abetted by other countries and the Holy See, pushed to center the Congregation in Rome; interdicts against communication with foreign superiors forced provinces in many countries to act autonomously; national pressures to swear loyalty and conform to compromising regulations created splits within the community and threatened to divide the Daughters and separate them from their brothers. Reduced membership and funding crippled the Vincentians’ efforts as they emerged from the worst of the state obstructions. Nevertheless, they began rebuilding and even made struggling beginnings in overseas missions, notably the United States, Brazil, the Ottoman Empire, the Middle East, and China, where the martyrdom of two missionaries galvanized interest in this distant and challenging mission.

Book The Rite of Christian Initiation

Download or read book The Rite of Christian Initiation written by Peter McGrail and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-17 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of recent papal legislation, the various liturgies of the Roman Rite may today be celebrated in either their post-Tridentine or post-Vatican II forms. Whilst much discussion of this new situation focuses on purely liturgical issues, this book breaks new ground by arguing that the coexistence of the two forms raises questions of a profoundly ecclesiological character. Peter McGrail explores the relationship between ritual form, ecclesial self- understanding and constructs of the world that are at play as adults become members of the Church. Analysing the rites by which adults were taken into the Church for three and a half centuries, this book goes on to explore attempts to find a new ritual expression for the journey to Christian Initiation, set against the divergent and even conflicting ecclesiologies which were at play before and during the Council.
