Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of John Locke, Vol. 1 of 2 King's book, as well as of all other publications bearing on 'the subject which I have been able to meet with, including, of course, the two collections of Locke's correspondence printed in most editions of his works.1 By placing these already published materials in their proper connections, I hope that I have greatly enhanced their value, as helps to an understanding of Locke's life and character. But more than half of the contents of this work are derived from hitherto unused manu scripts; and by them, in addition to their independent worth, altogether new light is thrown on most of the information that is not actually new. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of John Locke, 1829: With Extracts From His Correspondence, Journals, and Common-Place Books After the death of Locke, his papers, correspondence, and manuscripts, came into the possession of Sir Peter King, his near relation and sole executor. They consist of the originals of many of his printed works, and of some which were never published; of his very extensive correspondence with his friends, both in England and abroad; of a Journal which he kept during his travels in France and Holland; of his Com mon-place Books; and of many miscellaneous papers; all of which have been preserved in the same scrutoir in which they had been deposited by their author, and which was probably removed to this place in 1710. The works of Locke are universally known, but the indi vidual himself is much less so; I have therefore thought that a more detailed account of his life would contribute to in crease, if possible, the fame of that truly great and good man. The friends of freedom will excuse the attempt, from the veneration they feel for the man, and for the cause which he defended; they will be anxious to know more of one who so much promoted the general improvement of mankind; and they will learn with pleasure that his character was as pure and as exalted as his talents were great and useful. There are, however, others who would fain keep mankind in a state of perpetual pupilage, who, carrying their favourite doctrine of passive obedience into all our spiritual as well as temporal concerns, would willingly deliver us over in absolute subjection, for the one to the rulers of the Church, and for the other to the rulers of the State. These men cannot be expected to entertain any admiration for the champion of reason and truth, nor from them can I h0pe for any approba tion or favour in the present undertaking. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of John Locke, Vol. 6 The ensuing Letter concerning Toleration, first printed in Latin this very year, in Holland, has already been translated both into Dutch and French. So general and speedy an approbation may therefore bespeak its favourable reception in England. I think indeed there is no nation under heaven, in which so much has already been said upon that subject as ours. But yet certainly there is no people that stand in more need of having something further both said and done amongst them, in this point, than we do. Our government has not only been partial in matters of religion, but those also who have suffered under that partiality, and have therefore endeavoured by their writings to vindicate their own rights and liberties, have for the most part done it upon narrow principles, suited only to the interests of their own sects. This narrowness of spirit on all sides has undoubtedly been the principal occasion of our miseries and confusions. But whatever have been the occasions, it is now high time to seek for a thorough cure. We have need of more generous remedies than what have yet been made use of in our distemper.
