Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Flora Macdonald, and Her Adventures With Prince Charles: With a Life of the Author, and an Appendix Giving the Descendents of the Famous Heroine Her Life by her grand-daughter, Mrs. Wylde, is admittedly a romance in which fiction predominates and the general reader is quite unable to separate the fiction from the facts. The Rev. Author of this narrative had opportunities of Obtaining information which enabled him to make the work peculiarly valuable and interesting and our only regret in connection with it is, that he did not survive to see it through the press. FLORA AND THE PRINCE IN THE LONG ISLAND. T often occurs that qualities and virtues in the female character are utterly unknown to the world at large, merely because no event had ever taken place to afford an opportunity of displaying them. Such qualities and virtues elicit no remark, perhaps, when displayed by persons in a private sphere of life, whereas such amiable endowments often become of great importance when exhibited by such as may be called upon to perform some important public duty. Such was exactly the case with Miss Flora Macdonald. Had it not been that her prudence and energies were called forth by the important and critical part which she was instrumental in achieving, she might have lived and died unknown to the world. It is true that she was a young lady naturally gifted with an amiable disposition, firm determination, wide sympathies, an affectionate nature, and a strong sense of personal duty; but other young Highland ladies might have been similarly endowed, of whom nothing was ever heard or known beyond the sphere of their acquaintance, or the more contracted circle of their immediate relatives and friends. It was not so, however, with the kind-hearted heroine whose life and adventures furnish the abundant materials of deep interest which form our present subject. Her qualities and virtues were severely tested and became publicly known. Her trials and endurances were many, and varied in kind. The events of her life were frequently trying and remarkably chequered; and yet withal, she was gifted with the rare capacity and tact of adapting herself to any circumstances by which she was surrounded, or any events that might fall to her lot. She was a dutiful daughter, an affectionate wife, a prudent mother, an...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The astonishing life of one of Scotland's most famous daughters Anyone who knows about the abortive 1745 Jacobite Rising in Scotland, knows the romantic tale of how, after the catastrophic defeat at Culloden, the pretender, 'Bonnie' Prince Charlie fled for his life through the heather, eventually arriving at the island of Benbecula. There lived the MacDonald's who were secretly Jacobite sympathisers. Among their number was young Flora MacDonald, aged just 24, who as a simple act of charity, agreed to assist the prince to elude capture by the redcoats and effect an escape to the Continent. There followed a fascinating adventure that has become immortalised in song and which has endured undimmed in its poignancy to the present day. The first part of this book covers these famous events which would have been sufficient adventure for the lives of most young women. Most people do not know that Flora MacDonald was far from done with adventures, for she married an officer of the 87th Regiment of Foot--the Royal Highland Emigrants--and sailed to America. While serving the Crown in the American War of Independence, Flora's husband, Allen, was captured at Moore's Creek Bridge in 1777 and Flora had to go into hiding from rampaging American patriot forces. After the war the couple were reunited and sailed home to Scotland. Their ship was attacked by pirates and Flora was wounded in the action. Flora MacDonald's incredible life is chronicled in detail in the pages of this book which contains two works each concentrating on one of her 'two lives'. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Book Flora Macdonald Pretty Young Rebel

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A captivating biography of the remarkable young Scotswoman whose bold decision to help “Bonnie” Prince Charlie—the Stuart claimant to the British throne—evade capture and flee the country has become the stuff of legend. After his decisive defeat at the Battle of Culloden in 1746, Prince Charles Edward Stuart was a man on the run. Seeking refuge in the Outer Hebrides, hoping to escape to France, he found an unlikely ally in Flora MacDonald, a young woman in her early twenties, loyal to the Stuarts. Disguising the prince as an Irish maid, petticoats and all, Flora conveyed Charles by boat to Skye, where they lodged safely with her family, until the prince’s inexpert handling of feminine attire caused concern, and he was persuaded to forgo the ruse before fleeing the area undetected. Flora never saw him again. This famous incident led to Flora’s enduring appeal as a courageous Scottish heroine, inspiring and influencing countless novels, poems, and songs—most notably, the classic ballad “Skye Boat Song” adapted from a traditional tune in the late nineteenth century. But her remarkable life didn’t come to a close with her clandestine mission to Skye. Faced with a confession from one of the boatmen, Flora was arrested and taken to London on charges of treason, where under interrogation, she wittily deflected questions and staunchly defended her motives. She was eventually released under the 1747 Act of Indemnity, but disaster would befall her yet again: in 1774, Flora and her husband, Allan MacDonald, fled the impoverished highlands for a brighter future in Cross Creek, North Carolina—utterly unaware of the burgeoning revolution that would upend their lives there, with Allan imprisoned and Flora fleeing, penniless, back home to the Hebrides. In this probing, evocative portrait of a tumultuous life, master historian Flora Fraser peels away the layers of misinformation, legend, and myth to reveal Flora MacDonald in full. Fraser presents a fascinating picture of this headstrong and irrepressible woman. As Samuel Johnson declared upon visiting her in Scotland, her name was “a name that will be mentioned in history, and if courage and fidelity be virtues, mentioned with honor.”
