Book The Late Lord

Download or read book The Late Lord written by Jacqueline Reiter and published by Pen and Sword History. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Pitt, 2nd Earl of Chatham is one of the most enigmatic and overlooked figures of early nineteenth century British history. The elder brother of Pitt the Younger, he has long been consigned to history as 'the late Lord Chatham', the lazy commander-in-chief of the 1809 Walcheren expedition, whose inactivity and incompetence turned what should have been an easy victory into a disaster. Chatham's poor reputation obscures a fascinating and complex man. During a twenty-year career at the heart of government, he served in several important cabinet posts such as First Lord of the Admiralty and Master-General of the Ordnance. Yet despite his closeness to the Prime Minister and friendship with the Royal Family, political rivalries and private tragedy hampered his ascendance. Paradoxically for a man of widely admired diplomatic skills, his downfall owed as much to his personal insecurities and penchant for making enemies as it did to military failure. Using a variety of manuscript sources to tease Chatham from the records, this biography peels away the myths and places him for the first time in proper familial, political, and military context. It breathes life into a much-maligned member of one of Britain's greatest political dynasties, revealing a deeply flawed man trapped in the shadow of his illustrious relatives.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Charles: Third Earl Stanhope My own direct share in the book consists of Chapters VII to IX and XI to XIII, which describe the second half of Stanhope's crowded life and the unhappy relations with his family. My cordial thanks are due to Earl Stanhope for granting me unre stricted access to the rich collection of papers at Chevening and for permitting the reproduction of Gainsborough's portrait of his ancestor. I also desire to express my gratitude to Countess Stanhope for allowing me to discuss with her certain questions relating to the family history. I am indebted to the Dowager Countess of Ilchester for supplying me with copies of Stanhope's letters to Lord Holland, preserved at Holland House, and for per mission to reproduce Opie's portrait, which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1803 and was bequeathed by Stanhope to his friend and executor. If Miss Stanhope had been alive, she would have recorded her indebtedness to Sir E. Maunde Thompson and Dr. Holland Rose for assistance and encouragement. Other obligations are acknowledged in the notes and appendices. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Music Trade in Georgian England

Download or read book The Music Trade in Georgian England written by Michael Kassler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In contrast to today's music industry, whose principal products are recorded songs sold to customers round the world, the music trade in Georgian England was based upon London firms that published and sold printed music and manufactured and sold instruments on which this music could be played. The destruction of business records and other primary sources has hampered investigation of this trade, but recent research into legal proceedings, apprenticeship registers, surviving correspondence and other archived documentation has enabled aspects of its workings to be reconstructed. The first part of the book deals with Longman & Broderip, arguably the foremost English music seller in the late eighteenth century, and the firm's two successors - Broderip & Wilkinson and Muzio Clementi's variously styled partnerships - who carried on after Longman & Broderip's assets were divided in 1798. The next part shows how a rival music seller, John Bland, and his successors, used textual and thematic catalogues to advertise their publications. This is followed by a comprehensive review of the development of musical copyright in this period, a report of efforts by a leading inventor, Charles 3rd Earl Stanhope, to transform the ways in which music was printed and recorded, and a study of Georg Jacob Vollweiler's endeavour to introduce music lithography into England. The book should appeal not only to music historians but also to readers interested in English business history, publishing history and legal history between 1714 and 1830.
